Agree that SW currently leans hard on the OT. This is shifting. I am excited to see Ep 8 because of Rey, Finn, Poe, and of course Kylo. I want to know what Snoke's deal is. I want to know what is going on with the Republic. I am interested in the newness of the SW franchise. (This is probably another reason why R1 didn't work for me.)

Then of course there's things like Rebels which have, IMO, managed to tell interesting Star Wars stories which, while set in the OT era, haven't, in the main, leaned too hard on the events of the OT.

I prefer Star Wars as it was during its theatrical release. While I was excited for the Special Editions (I saw them in the theater), I hate them now. Boba Fett appearing as one of Jabba thugs, the additional CGI around the Mos Eisley, the extended singing of that ridiculous alien in the beginning of Return of the Jedi, and of course, the worst part, Greedo shooting first, just to name a few. I am ok watching older movies and their limited special effects, and are more annoyed with the revisions trying to catch it up with the times than to just leave it as it was originally produced.

If they could have added anything in the Special Editions that I would have liked, it would have been the deleted scenes of Luke and his friends and even the chic with Solo before Ben and Luke sit at the table.

I personally love the idea of everything going on in the universe of Star Wars AROUND the characters. Love the cantina aliens, and imaging what their stories might have been.

In my mind, Lucas was re-making the movie NOT as he intended, but for a new generation of kids. I think his mind changed on how the events should play out for them and upgraded the effects to keep them interested.

And Episodes 1-3 are terrible. If Star Wars was awesome because he lost control over it, then Star Wars was an accidental mess that turned out to be awesome.

In my Star Wars universe, its just Rogue One, A New Hope, surrounded by bookends. I love Empire, but don't need it.

Star Wars WAS an accident. He came along at the right place, at the right time, and tapped into this adolescent zeitgeist in America. I can't think of any original movie or TV show that exploded like Star Wars did right out of the box.
