Against T7 3+/4++, the Autocannon becomes more effective for its points than any other standard heavy weapon AM/SM can field (not that SM can field Autocannons).
It is more effective than the Lascannon, the Heavy Bolter and the Assault Cannon, point per point.
That knowledge may help in building a shooting list against Mortarion.

Doing it without compromising the rest of the list might be tricky though. Maybe a pair of hydras or hydra platforms?

You are completely right, the Autocannon is garbage for its points in comparison to the other weapons against anything that's not T6/7 multiwound with a 4+ invuln. Even with a 5++ the Lascannon still edges it damage per point wise - and these (T6/7 multiwounds with invulns) are supposed to be the optimal targets for Autocannons where it's supposed to do a better job than the others. Autocannons should be 10 maybe 12pts, that would make them as viable a choice as a Lascannon/heavybolter/assault cannon.

What about assassin support? They bypass invulnerable.

Callidus, 5 attacks, hit on 2's, wound on 5's, morty then gets a 6+ armor save and a 5+ FNP. Yeah, you're going to need a LOT of Callidus to make that work.

A culexus might help to block miasma from going off which would be very helpful in terms of gunning him down with the rest of the army. But i think the casting value is 6, so making it an 8 still gives him pretty good odds.

Eversor shouldn't even bother.

Vindicare one shot, hit on 2, wound on 5, morty gets a 6+ armor save and 5+ FNP on the D3 wounds.

Comedy option, morty's points in Ratlings. 3 normal wounds after saves and 4 mortals.

Callidus will also get a chance to do d3 mortal wounds with her neural shredder before she goes in. With Hit & Run she can do this every turn as long as she saves his hits and survives Host of Plagues. So, he either has to stop his advance and fight her where she will get a 4++ or use the fly keyword and keep moving and she is fast enough to harass him again the next turn.

The Culexus can also try to tank for at least a couple of rounds in CC as he is only hit on 6+. Just has to worry about Host of Plagues going off. The Culexus will definitely be more annoying to the Death Guard player because of the 18" bubble and force him to devote resources to remove him.

A Vanguard detachment with 2 Culexus and 1 Callidus + 1 cheap imperium HQ of your choice (although an Ordo Malleus Inquisitor with Dominate for the lolz could go here if you have the points) is still significantly cheaper than Mortarion and could "distraction carnifex" him out of the fight on turns 2 & 3 by popping them up 1 at a time while you blast away the rest of his army and go for objectives.

Alternatively, the assassins could ignore Morty and go after all the DG support pieces and other psykers.

A remotely competetive list will not have trouble beating morty. Also you're getting double shot russes soon

Guard is set to be king of 8th for some time yet

Yeah so I remember when I complained earlier in this thread that I don't have enough guns per point to deal with Morty.

Well, my superheavies lost some points and gained some gun, so ...

...

I lied. It shouldn't be too difficult.

I have to admit, Catachan Doctrine with all the guns might do it. Or Tallarn with some hellhounds. Mort can't be on both sides of the board at once.

I'm enjoying all the new options, although I feel real bad for the Eldar and Tyranid players now.

The codex gave guard some really nice tools for this. I think Cadians are especially well equipped for the job. The battle cannon now fires twice, can be ordered to reroll the number of shots, and rerolls 1 to hit.

Then you got the overlapping fields of fire stratagem to help your army focus fire, the reroll stratagem, and the Cadian relic which allows all Cadians within 12" to reroll 1s on the hit and wound rolls, or all hit and would rolls vs chaos. This one is once per game

There is also the general guard stratagem that allows a unit to reroll all hits and wounds against chaos.
