T-rexes don't need to be carried.

I pretty much agree Beastwars>transfomers across the board with the toys.

Tough call. Though - the Dino bots are personified by Beastwars Dinobot which is a velociraptor. Dinobot fought Trex Megatron many times always getting his tall whopped.

However in almost any case I'm going to take Megatron over Grimlock - because Megatron.

Now that brings me to another issue, the Soundwave Problem.

Decepticon Communications Officer, stoic, loyal, calm.

He turned into a radio cassette player and had a loyal cadre of mini bots who turned into cassette tapes. Laserbeak sat on his arm like a loyal familiar. His AA batteries turned into guns.

He was just about perfect.

But that was 30 years ago and cassette tapes have gone from being obsolete, to laughably anachronistic, to mysterious artifacts known only through vestiges like Sound Wave.

So what would work today?

Sure MP3 players make sense but they you lose the elegance of the cassette tape familiars. I think one of the movies had him turning into a satellite which is very cool, more appropriate than a car or missile launcher (both of which have been made as toys) but take him in a different direction entirely.

One idea I saw was a laptop, with his cadre turning into a mouse, a thumb drive and a cell phone. Which is kind of neat.

Any other ideas for something modern that still has the family feel of a tape player and tapes?

I love the satellite idea, and that will stand the test of time!

On earth, what about being a variant satellite receiver / broadcaster? Almost all music is streaming now, right

The familiars could still be storage-things, just now they hold terabytes of data instead of a single music album

Edit: That, or the familiars could instead help form a SETI like array... that would be cool

My 11 year old nephew really likes the G1 Transformers cartoons, which was a big surprise.

Not the movies, not Prime, not Rescue Bots, but real honest to Primus G1.

I was impressed, to say the least!

Anyway, I used the opportunity to ask him if Soundwave transforming into something that he'd never encountered in life was weird. Apparently it wasn't. To be fair, at his age I'd never encountered a Walther P38 and Megatron didn't confuse me.

Soundwave is easy: He is a Nintendo 3DS:

These things come complete with cartridges.
Ravage can live again!

Megatron would do well in this little package:

He could then upgrade/bolt-on whatever he wants and he can be moderately stealthy and transportable.

A revolution is an idea which has found its bayonets.

I thought Soundwave was easily the most intimidating villain on Transformers Prime, and I remember that line (or something like it). Don't know it was uttered in other series' before, but I definitely remember the line XD

He makes total sense as a Predator drone too imo.

For something more militaristic how about Sound Wave as an AWAC and his family as predator drones?

It's from the G1 movie. After Starscream kicks Megatron out of Astrotrain and they're arguing who should be in charge, the Constructicons say they should be in charge.

Soundwave is having none of that, and delivers the "Soundwave superior. Constructicons inferior!" line.

For me, the secret to Soundwave's success was his uniquely robotic voice.

It was cold, factual and emotionless.

If the superior/inferior line had been delivered with any kind of ego, rather than matter-of-factly, it wouldn't have worked as well.

Soundwave should stay a cassette player. He shouldn't conform to advances in technology. He gives zero feths what anyone thinks.

Agreed. Either:

A) Transformers should just always be a period piece, set in the time in which it was created, or

B) If not, then Soundwave should just always be a cassette player anyway. The only one in the world and nobody should even bat an eye at such a thing exists or is being used in the modern day, even if it is the only one.

Cause his design, and his cassette critter designs are just too perfect the way they are. Changing them to anything else would destroy too much of what makes them awesome.

Surprised you don't have it already.

I think I have the most sadistic version of the DVD. In the special features section it has character profiles, and if the character dies during the movie it has an option that says "View the death". Selecting that takes you to the exact point in the movie where the character dies (or in the case of Windchager and Wheeljack, the bit where Arcee discovers their bodies).

Savage!

I did have it on VHS but that was 15 years and 4 countries ago.

I do have GI Joe the movie on DVD, does that help?

Well Yakface has spoken

Fun Fact - All the Transformers that turn into little stuff (Megatron, Soundwave, Perceptor, the tapes) were from the Micro Man line of Japanese toys and were intended as 1:1 scale robots!

And Micro Man was also adapted in the 70s as the Micronauts! My first great geek love.

Oh yeah, had a bunch of these.
Remember being really excited when I got the BattleCruiser:

Those "wings" were actual plunger "guns" with a heavy Indian rubber ball with a really strong spring, took huge force to get the thing to latch.
Hurt like heck getting shot even 5 feet away.

But yes, they had these mini-cassettes for dictation and those little tape guys were the same size:

He could become a Nintendo Switch, and his critters could be joycons (in all kinds of colours), SD cards/game cards, gamepads, the dock, and an USB cable.

I think I can out geek you. I have the original vhs tape I had from when I saw tf:tm when I was 4, and I have kept a vhs player specifcally to watch this tape. I must have watched that tape hundreds of times over the last twenty eight years - it's still my favourite movie.

And imo, the old grimy, gritty tape of the movie is far darker and far more atmospheric than that of the remastered DVD versions of the same movie.

The most recent version of Soundwave(and Blaster as they share a mould) looks a lot like the old G1 version. But the tape minions turn into portable mp3 players that dock in his chest compartment.

A docking station and MP3 players, that works, that really works. As long as you don't mind size-changing.

Another thought would be a satellite news truck with a flock of camera drones that dock to it. That would fit the communications role and tie into modern anxieties about the death of privacy/big brother.
