Yeah, low-budget syndicated schlock was awesome as a kid. We really need more of that now-a-days. Reality TV has taken up its space, and we are all poorer for it.

I think the Battlestar Galactica reboot might have been what changed things. I seem to remember that one being the vanguard of SF/F shows racing to prove they could be edgy, dark and mature.

"The 75mm gun is firing. The 37mm gun is firing, but is traversed round the wrong way. The Browning is jammed. I am saying "Driver, advance." and the driver, who can't hear me, is reversing. And as I look over the top of the turret and see twelve enemy tanks fifty yards away, someone hands me a cheese sandwich."

Feeder, could you give me a list of the best post-cancellation Futurama episodes, please. I saw three or four of them that all sucked, and after the DVD movies we just weren't willing to give it more of a chance. I'll concede the point about Futurama if it turns out there really were some good ones in the Comedy Central seasons.

Oh man, where do I even begin? I love old TV shows, they were way better than the (mostly) crappy stuff they make these days. I'll have to sort mine by genre:

Sci-fi: I love all the Star Trek series, from the original 1960s ones all the way to Enterprise (in spite of the crappy episodes). I also like the original Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. I've also watched some SeaQuest DSV, but I lost interest midway through the second season as the quality seemed to drop off sharply. And I was royally pissed when Netflix dropped Babylon 5, as I was really enjoying the series and had only just gotten started (about halfway through season 1). And to round it out, I also love me some Stargate SG-1.

Action: The 1960's Batman series is really enjoyable to me. I also like Mission: Impossible, The A-team, Knight Rider, and MacGyver.

Comedy: Hogan's Heroes, M*A*S*H, F-troop, and even The Love Boat are all shows that I enjoy and make me laugh sometimes (although Love Boat isn't always a comedy, sometimes the drama gets pretty heavy).

British Comedy: I'm told that for an American I really have a thing for British TV. I really enjoy Are You Being Served? and Keeping Up Appearances, as well as Red Dwarf and Fawlty Towers. And of course, how could I not like Monty Python's Flying Circus?

I'm sure given time I could come up with an exhaustive list, but this should convey the idea that I like a lot of old TV shows. They are good to put on in the background while I paint models.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2023: 40 | Total models painted in 2024: 7 | Current main painting project: Dark Angels

If I love one series, then that is classic Doctor Who. What they could accomplish with low budget is amazing and I think it still holds up as a series, despite many episodes missing and the color being black and white during the first 2 Doctors. My favourite Doctor so far is William Hartnell.

I am the Hammer,
I am the point of His spear,
I am the mail about His fist,
I am the bane of His foes and the woes of the treacherous,
I am the End.

You know what Gary Cole series you shouldn't check out? Crusade.

Early Edition was awesome. I'll have to look it up to see if it's streamable anywhere.

Crusade was a disaster. I don't think anyone on that show knew what it was supposed to be, other than an excuse to resuse old sets.

Some more great shows that have not been mentioned yet:

- Ren & Stimpy,
- Frasier,
- The Wire (too young to be mentioned?),
- The Muppet Show (despite all the actors and references to times gone by),
- The Joy of Painting.

:-)

Also, the show that shaped my sense of humour - or at least my taste for it - probably more than anything else: Monty Pythons Flying Circus.

Babylon 5.

That for me is when SciFi came of age on the Teevee.

Prior to that, it was typically episodic with little in the way of story arcs crossing episodes, let alone seasons. It was also the first (so far as I can think, I may be wrong) to be a static setting - the cast and crew couldn't simply Warp away from a given situation.

First season was a bit ropey, but it soon found it's feet. The storylines were mature and thought provoking - especially for me the whole way the war is resolved. Not gonna spoil it, but I loved that moment!

Really? I thought the resolution was one of the worst parts of the whole storyline.

Spoiler:
All that time spent building up the growing war, the securing of allies etc etc and then the whole thing's resolved by basically yelling 'Oh, grow up!'.

Didn't float my boat, sadly.

Actually, they were told the series was getting cancelled a full season earlier than planned, so they had to cram two seasons worth of story into one. The Shadow War plot was the one that got the short end of the stick, sadly.
Then they got given a fifth season after all, which completely floundered with the main storylines already wrapped up.

I thought John and Delenn's moment was absolutely pitch perfect.

To just refuse, say 'no, go eff yourself' was fantastic. And given our species keeps at it's own throat owing to nonsense for decades, centuries and in some cases millennia ago, it's one we need to learn from.

Before reality TV was the Age of Sit-Coms. Murphy Brown, Cheers, Golden Girls, Family Ties, Empty Nest, The Cosby Show, Who's The Boss, Diff'rent Strokes, Frasier, Bob, Facts of Life, Caroline in the City, Major Dad, Family Matters. Some of them were classics, and others...charming at best, but what an era.

I bought Space: Above and Beyond recently and was very impressed with how it had stood up, a show before it's time.

Also if we're considering late 90's/early 2000's as "older" (God, that's depressing), then how has no-one mentioned Band of Brothers yet?! Probably the genesis of HBO boxset binging.

On a slightly different tack, I remember loving the 1930's Flash Gordon as an 8-10 year old, when it was shown on Saturday morning TV. Don't know whether it would stand rewatching as an adult, but fantastic kids TV.

And finally, I was reminded the other day that it is now the 15th anniversary of Firefly...

I bought Space Precinct years ago but haven't open the seal because I'm worried about just how badly the show might have aged. What was great to watch for a 12 year old at 2am might not be so great for a 38 year old in the light of day.

Those odd B&W serials were fun fillers of UK kids telly in the 70/80's, my fav was King of the Rocket Men, without which we wouldn't have got the criminally overlooked Rocketeer film

Does Deep Space 9 count as "old" yet? Because Deep Space 9 is by far the best Star Trek has ever been and (looking at the current offerings), the best it ever will be.

HATE Club, East London

I just watched ST:TNG this morning - The Family episode that came straight after Best of Both Worlds. Still absolute quality. I'd be hard-pressed to choose between that and The Inner Light as my favourite episode and both would get into my top-ten TV episodes ever, I reckon, and certainly into my top-ten SciFi TV episodes. Patrick Stewart is fantastic, whilst also understated. A rare combo in an actor. Not every TNG episode stands the test of time, but the best ones are ageless, the good ones are still good and only the earliest and/or very weakest now look past it.

I only watched DS9 for the first time in the last 6 months, but have to say it was great stuff. I didn't feel like I was watching some crappy 90s show - it felt modern and relevant.

Voyager, on the other hand, has dated badly. I'm trying to watch it and keep stopping because it is so cheesy and crap. Does it get better after season 1? Only the doctor genuinely interests me. Apart from him, Tom Parris seems to be a wasted opportunity and Chakotay and Torres seem like maybe they could eventually turn interesting, but they certainly aren't so far.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

Voyager stays cheesy, although Paris and Torres get a little more interesting.
The show as a whole does get a little better, especially after Seven of Nine (She of the Big Boobs And Skintight Suits. Also has a lovely singing voice which I wish they'd done more with) comes onboard, but not much.

Yeah, it gets better but not good. There are some episodes that are worth watching on their own, but they aren't worth wading through the whole show for.

That was part of it, but it was also the new network. They wanted more.. 'prime time sexiness' is the only way to put it. Something 'very oddly American TV', especially at the time. Not nudity, because you can't, but more sexy ladies in suggestive outfits, and the leering of Kirk with Green Women style of thing.
And fistfights, of course.

BobtheInquisitor wrote:Yeah, it gets better but not good. There are some episodes that are worth watching on their own, but they aren't worth wading through the whole show for.

I find that true of all Star Trek, except DS9. For most of the ST series, there is a lot of chaff around some good episodes, whereas DS9 is mostly excellent wrapped around a few stinkers.
Though admittedly part of that is a bias toward a storyline rather than episodic fire and forget nonsense.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

Classic but lost Dr Who Serial 'Shada' is being completed via the magic of animation, complete with original actors doing the voices.

This is one I used to have on VHS as a 'scraps' release, with bridging narration. Didn't quite work for me. But, having enjoyed animation patched serials before, I'm hopeful here!
