I think the answer you are looking for really depends on your miniatures collection and whether having the 'official' miniature and components bothers you. The reason I say this is that I have played TWD a couple of times and not used a single TWD model, I have used other survivor and zombie models I have from other board games (zombicide etc).

However, the limitation you will hit is the player cards and equipment cards. The equipment deck I feel is a 'must have' especially if you dont have all the extra equipment from all the extra boosters and box sets. Unfortunately there is no 'character pack' to get the details of official survivors but if you look at the individual boosters on the Mantic website they mostly have pictures of the characters that you can download and print out.

If it bothers you playing with printed materials then the CE is probably the way to go (especially if you enjoy the game) but if you like to keep in a tight budget and have a healthy collection of suitable models then the Standard edition with a couple of extra purchases and some time/effort will do just nicely.

At the moment I've gone standard AoW starter set, with the Days Gone Bye expansion and a couple of boosters (Morgan/Duane and Rick on horsebook). I also have the fancy neoprene mat (replacement for the paper one in the starter set). Otherwise agree with what MangoMadness says though, there is no reason that standard post-apoc minis couldn't work perfectly well with the game.

Am absolutely loving the zombies for this game. Even though have painted up so many of them in the past (for every conceivable setting, or so it seems) these have been the most fun, really characterful sculpts and nice blocks of detail that make them fast to paint. Some examples of them that I've painted up in spoilers below

All Things Zombie looks interesting and has a PDF so you don't have to pay horrendous postage prices.

All Things Zombie looks interesting and has a PDF so you don't have to pay horrendous postage prices.

You can also try out the free generic rules before buying ATZ to see if you like the Two Hour Wargames mechanisms.

Outside of the main cast characters, a lot of the extra guys have almost no presence in the comic. I think some have even had names added to the Wiki Fandom site because of the AOW game (they literally just appeared on a few pages of the comic, and weren't given a name before they usually met some grizzly end).

In the starter set for example all of the bad guys (Derek, Sandra, Jake) are given almost no characterisation. Jake (the rubbish, screaming one with low nerve) I think appears in about two frames before his 'friends' push him into a mob of zombies so they can escape, that's it for his part!

So I don't think the background story is terribly important. I read recently some quite cool campaign AARs on a blog which featured the 'bad guys' from the starter set playing some of the solo scenarios, just trying to find supplies and survive. It could have been from any post/apoc zombie setting really, the guy had built up a narrative as he went along, and it wouldn't have had to be TWD.

Agreed. As I mentioned above, I neither read the comics nor watch the show. I buy and play TWD solely because it is an excellent game design with quality components.

Well, I just picked up the All Out War Collector's Edition and the prison expansion from Miniature Market's latest sale.

I was going to leave it on the table but logged on to Dakka and this thread convinced me to give it a try. That you all mentioned it could be played solo, co-op, or pvp sealed the deal.
