S/He's not supposed to be. The British Prime Minister is first amongst equals of Her Majesty's Ministers. Hence the name 'Prime' Minister. Sort of a chairperson position. Cabinet responsibility is supposed to reign supreme, as opposed to the American system of having one person calling all the shots and expecting everyone else to defer. Ministers are expected to argue with, and occasionally disobey the will of the Prime Minister, they're just not supposed to do it in public. What happens in the Cabinet, stays in the Cabinet, etc.

Blair did his level best to make the position into that of a Presidency though, and the country still hasn't recovered from it. Brown was a fellow would be dictator, and Cameron happily stepped into his cooling shoes. May is more of a believer in cabinet responsibility, but she's got such a divisive cabinet and squabbling party that little in the way of united action happens if she doesn't directly force it.

The queen is meant to be head of state on paper.

Parliament and the PM acts on her behalf and runs the country as her magesties government.

In practice they call all the shots and are the highest ranking members of government.

The Queen main role is to merely sign everything off, state functions and diplomacy.

Duchess of someplace or other.

The BBC had a pretty decent article on the fact that like Kate and Diana, officially she can't be called 'Princess Meghan.' Because something something 'royal blood,' whatever that is supposed to mean to rational people in a scientific society.
Officially, mind- a lot of news outlets will still take the obvious shortcut of calling her princess.

Prince and Princess are titles usually reserved for blood children of a Monarch. Contrary to what Disney movies tell you, marrying a Prince doesn't make you a Princess.

I think a wife of a prince can be called princess as a courtesy, but she gains no privileges of being a princess. Somewhat similar to Mrs. Henry Wales (I think he used Wales as his "last name" in the military), which is frequently used by many people.

Other than being American, I think we should expect the same as we got from Catherine. Wasn't she without any peerage prior to marriage as well?

Correct, the estates bring in more than the Royals cost. All this fuss about the Queen getting a massive pay rise was actually her estate reducing their voluntary tax donations (Queen isn't obliged to pay any tax) in order to fund some repair/restoration work.

Hmm... our now Queen was called "Princess" when she married Fernando, and she doesn't has royal blood. Maybe is different from country to country.

Actually he's apparently doing the circuit and making a tidy sum (or planning to make a tidy sum) off the whole thing.
There's a book and a 'divorce comedy' in the works for Fox (he's a film producer), about a 'fictional' couple sharing custody of kid(s) after a divorce (which helps the fictional angle, since they didn't have kids), and then the woman marries into the British royal family.

UK system you have to born into a Royal family.

Kate is Duchess.
Prince Phillip was a Royal, and also is Prince Consort. So is a full a Prince, also a Duke.
Megan will be a Duchess.

The male consort of a reigning monarch of the UK is called a prince. The one exception was King Williamandmary, in the 1680s.

However the female consort of a reigning monarch is called a queen. Thus, Kate will become queen when William succeeds to the throne.

The issue is some of those estates would probably bring in more money without the royal family. Without them living in Buckingham Palace, for example, we could have tours of the entire thing all year round.

I thought Kate could technically go by the name "Princess William of Wales" to show she's not a princess in her own right but princess of billy boy.

Not yet. Charles still holds that title. When he hands it down to William, William gets the title.

Kate will have to stick with Duchess for now. She is unofficial Princess to media though of course.

True, but you'd still be paying to upkeep the things and you'd need more staff.

Plus people turn up just in case Queenie pops her head outside the window.

And then you wouldn't have the money from the events they do.

Yes, also even of Royals own buildings. Alot of old masters, thr crown Jewals, The Royal collections of armour, and other miscellaneous items of value collected over the centuries.

Theres alot of that is owned by the state also.

Its hard to work out where Royal collections end and state ones begin at times

Well, if the day ever comes that the population of the UK want to get rid of the Royal Family, they can be sent off with the various posessions that unequivocally are theirs, such as Sandringham, Balmoral and Castle of May.

The rest of the stuff can be settled with a lump sum payment which will set them up for life. They won't want a load of old masters and stuff anyway. They couldn't afford to insure it.

She seems nice and assured - impressed by how she handled the engagement interview.

Re titles, Ms Markle will likely become a Royal Duchess like Catherine so she gets the whole Your Royal Highness, and their children will be Princes and Princesses in their own right.

Benefit of being the younger brother. Not as many official responsibilities. More opportunity to hang out with ordinary people.

My wife and I got a laugh out of this one:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/11/29/prince-william-harrys-marriage-will-stop-scrounging-food/

Speaking during a visit to a Helsinki-based charity, the Duke said the family were "all very excited, delighted for them both and wishing them all the happiness in this very exciting time.

"And for me personally I hope it means he stays out of my fridge, it will stop him scrounging off all my food, he's done over the last few years."

Starts with the canned, scripted "Excited, delighted..." and end with "older brother gets a jab at younger brother."

Ha!
