Saw it.

A complete 5/10 movie experience, and I mean within its genre of fun but stupid. Better than the book but that's not saying anything at all (see my previous post up top about how completely gak the book is).

Not many stand out moments for me, but my main disappoint was just the general mediocrity of the CGI. While a fun goofy premise I could have used a bit more "spookiness".

I thought it was decent fun and I got a few laughs out of it. Would have prefered to pay less for what I got out of it though.

Not sure it’s doing very well though. I went to see it in IMAX at Odeon and I was literally the only person in the room, that’s never happened to me at a cinema before. I had to go out and find a member of staff to ask them to get the film started because when I went in and all the lights were off I thought I’d been sent to the wrong screen.

I went to the cinema looking for over-the-top fun. And there are a few minutes of it. But the movie is overwhelmingly generic. I spent most of the running time aware of how bored I was waiting for the next shark scene.

The Meg hasn't got gak on Deep Blue Sea.

I will concur with Manchu --- one way to know a movie isn't super engrossing is when you find yourself looking around the theatre, aware you're in the theatre. I had several of those moments in the theatre.

Finally saw it. It was better than the book, a rarity in Hollywood productions. It is largely because they made some effort to write the characters as distinct individuals. Book characters were completely flat and uninteresting and only served as plot progression devices. Science-way, it was stupid, but no more than the book. I was impressed that they actually made an effort to provide pseudo-scientific explanation - which resulted to impressive visuals too - why the Meg was locked down in the bottom. The book put much less effort there.

However the movie could have been much better. Lack of gore definitely hurt it. It was too clean and tame. Dialogue would have needed another rewrite cycle. And the scene progression was way too predictable. A movie like this needs to have 'Whoa!' moments and this really didn't have much if any. It was too paint-by-numbers.

The shark itself was bit disappointing. It just didn't look as scary as I expected and animation wasn't the best. It was only slightly better than Deep Blue Sea CGI sharks, and those were pretty bad. At this time and age, I expect better. The book shark had evolved into albino, maybe they should have gone this route too.

Anyway, it was okay as a B-flick but could have been more.

Yep, I agree...I really feel it lacked spookiness or wow moments. I mean, there is some terrifying fan art of Megalodons out there, and they could have used some of that imagery to create some really crazy scenes. They just didn't. In fact if anything they rarely ever gave me a moment to consider "wow that's big". Very few scenes to appreciate the scale. I think this will be prime Netflix fodder though.
