No, I think they're trying to find the right balance between: making the game simple to learn so as to entice new players who were teetering but found it all too complicated.
And having some level of tactical depth and variety between factions to keep the core group of players interested. It's a hard balance to find I'm sure. Though I will say large model things like Guilleman, or a Character dreadnought being un-targetable with justifications of, oh well they're too small so they blend in with the masses of the enemy, just a little logic defying.

Nope, I think it's getting better and better. yes, some rules/points costs are stupid (op or otherwise). but overall, the models, the game & to a lesser extent fluff are on the right track.

I've had so much fun in 8th I'm actually glad I didn't come back before.

one thing I think they need to (and poss beginning to) do is giving armies that hadnt had much love this millennium their due. as well as bringing back Bloodbowl, Necro, and Titanicus.

40k jumped the shark with 8th........

It all boils down to your list vs their list, and target priority.

Flanking, positioning and battlefield maneuvering is just so negligible in the grand scheme of things.

7th was pretty bad too, but at least positioning and terrain mattered........
also the current flyer rules really make me angry.

I think, if taken at face value, this poll presents some terrifying implications... How is Matt Ward the dad of so many dakkanauts??

Nah, players wanted him and they moved the story a bit, its normal progress.

No, it was made into a story. 40k was doing perfectly fine as a setting for the past 3 decades until they decided a period of time longer than recorded human history so far is not good enough to play around in and to draw inspiration from.

Don’t worry about Daddy Ward. He might not be the best writer, but mom said he was the best lover she ever had.

GW is clearly not only trying to balance the game, but to make a competitive player's game look more like they imagine it should: Some long range firepower, some skirmishing in the middle of the table, and just a smattering of deep strike.

8th edition was in part designed to remove all the stupid things us competitive players used to argue about. How many dudes under that template? Good-bye templates. Which vehicle facing is towards me? No more vehicle facings.

Every FAQ that has come out in this edition has made the game just a bit closer to that ideal. Flyers too strong? Up their points. Fearless conscripts swamping the board? Behold, they're not fearless or cheap anymore. SPAM's advantages focusing players on just one aspect of their army? Max 3 units of each non-troop type. Deep strike being used for an alpha strike? Turn 1 you can only deep strike in your own deployment zone. People not getting the hint? Up the command point benefits for detachments with lots of troops.

That doesn't mean that the game will get totally boring. Tyranids have ways to get in your face on turn 1 if they really dedicate themselves to it, as do sisters of battle, harlequins, Ynarri, and silly space marine players who love scouts. Tau commanders will bounce around and keep enemy skirmishers from locking them down. Some players will bring all infantry, others will bring baneblades, each looking to do something slightly different to surprise their opponents.

I'm a big fan of this edition.

How did GW Jumped the Shark? They are doing what many of us have asked to do. Advance the story line. Mini wise, maybe they jumped the shark with having a Space Marine that is in armour also be in armour. Or maybe having a Space Marine in a baby harness.

Or having Space Marines in a fantasy setting. That is where GW may have jumped the shark, but finally turning it around into something good.

*edit*

Maybe, GW jumped the shark when they put Kirby incharge and had the Kirby reign for what 10 or 15 years? That is when GW lost it's way and became a corporation instead of a games company.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

Not counting the wardlings, around %30 of the players voted yes or somewhat.

I suspect that number will keep growing.

If by 30% you mean less than that, and if by “keep growing”, you mean “won’t”, then you’d be right. And why would you put a category people can select that you’d then remove from the data? Is it because you know that you can actually add those numbers to the “no” category, and that’d only further harm whatever point it is you’re trying to make?

Well, I just voted no.

Anecdotes a-go-go!

My Necron list, primitive as it is, isn’t affected beyond two extra CP, which are always welcome.

The group I tend to game with do regular tournament play. Only a couple have had to change their list due to points changes or new restrictions. And even then, it’s only a couple of units here and there, rather than a ‘bums, from the ground up it is’ re-write.

FAQ has mostly affected unimaginative, net-listing WAAC sad cases. And I welcome this as a new paradigm. The Beta rules encourage a more balanced force, with a decent selection of units - having ruled out simply taking as many of The Best Unit as you can. Sure, Obvious Combinations will still make their way to the field, but that’s unavoidable. But I’d suggest the aforementioned unimaginative, net-listing WAAC sad cases beware. It’s only 6 months to the next FAQ and presumably Errata. Who knows how newly abusive lists, which aren’t fun for opponents, will get slapped down, eh?

Well said. Probably is that a lot of players won't accept it that these changes are making the game better.

I am pretty sure its in the dakkadakka TOS that for every poll you must put a "fun" option for those users who just like to "click on stuff".

No GW/40K has not jumped the shark. If anything 8th edition is an interesting development. GW really play tested this thing and are listening to the players when it comes to the FAQs. No not everyone agrees with what their doing but at least they're trying.

I object to being lumped in with the no crowd just because Matt Ward is my daddy.

All the changes so far, good or bad, still love this edition more than the past 3. It is so much more simple to play, and we have more freedom to do things that just make sense. Having a tank charge into some space marines, and then the space marines being too stupid to just walk away from it always bugged me.
