How well would the rules 'scale down' for younger players? I mentioned the game to a friend last weekend who is already teaching his 5 year old to paint and play some games... This would be an easy win for both of them in some ways.

5 year old, so skipping a lot of the more complex bits and using simpler scenarios and stuff.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

Love gaslands. I've always loved cars, classic American muscle, wargaming, etc. It's amazingly cheap, fun to 'mad max' some hotwheels, and a great game.

You can print the templates for free, use any tabletop or floor, and almost everyone has old hotwheels that are already beat up... all it cost for entry is the $13 rule book (and then bits, paint, however crazy you want to dive in).

To me it's a better xwing, and a good break from 40k, etc. So glad I found the game.

I think if you forgo all the driver perks and audience votes, and just do either the Death Race or Arena of Death scenarios (which are pretty much exactly what they sound like), it shouldn't be too bad for younger players. You could also simplify a little more by not taking some of the funkier weapons (e.g., Molotov Cocktails cause Fire which has extra rules) and just pre-build several cars with machine guns and rams, and still have a fun game.

Yeah, Rule of Cool (and Rule of Carnage) is the way to go!
It's easy to explain 2 gun barrels represent a Heavy Machine Gun instead of a normal Machine Gun, for example. And yeah there's always the "it's broken right now" to explain why you're not using some particular bob on the car for a given game. What's on the dashboards is what matters more.

So it looks like Osprey sells the rulebook, but they've given it over to various sources to print templates and such. Are there any free files ready-to-print for the templates and such? I have cheap access to a laser cutter... Acrylic cuts real nice usually.

You can download the templates from their website under Downloads. Not sure how to convert it for your laser cutter.

There are a few floating around on Thingiverse and the Facebook group might have some links, too. But, you could also probably just download the template sheet and it should be fairly easy to convert into the appropriate file type, I'd think.

Excellent points, and rule of cool is, and should always be, the way to go!

In other news I've gone down the rabbit hole and started experimenting with 28mm Gaslands teams as well. Help me, I have a problem!

I have a few 4'x4' mats and some 6'x4' terrain tiles.

I was going to use 4'x4' first and if that was too crowded move up. Really, I just want to smash big vehicles into each other so a smaller board might be better?

Yes, I found these after I asked of course.

Conversion might be simple, as it's basically isolating the 'cut' lines from the 'engrave' lines and messing with some settings for each group. I'll have to give it a try. And, of course, maybe reorganise to try to get 2+ sets on a 12x12 piece of material.

Just FYI, they made an official announcement at some point saying the template INCLUDES the black line. So when you cut it, cut on the outside of the line for accurate templates and not inside the line.

Hey there! Fellow Seattle player here. Where do you usually play? We sometimes hit Mox Boardinghouse in Ballard on Wednesdays (though haven't for a couple of weeks due to Life(TM)). I hear there's also a strong Gaslands group up at Heroic Knight Games in Issaquah.

Shouldn't be a huge deal. I can probably select each outer shape, make a copy that is slightly bigger, and set that to cut. (The gear I use that's all-red, hairline width, in CorelDraw.) Not insurmountable.

If they are removable then I take them out and replace with wire mesh, plasticard or something armor looking. If it’s molded on then I paint it or cover it. Basically if they could see inside and there’s no driver I hide it.

Same here.

I haven't worked up the courage to drill out the bolts and disassemble a car to remove the plastic windows so I just cover any windows in plasticard or other armor.

Theophony, what sort of wire mesh do you use and where do you source it? I've seen some people cutting up metal colanders, but that seems expensive.

it looks like Amazon has a few vendors selling various meshes by the sheet... I'm guessing a 12x12 sheet would last nearly forever for car conversion use?

I feel like I'd end up treating every car individually if I got into modding cars for this. Hot Wheels always has some oddball cars in the cheap sets: I could see them as various flavors of converted from Mad Max war rigs to more military semi-custom jobs.

Ah, I'll look on Amazon. Is there a size of mesh that is appropriate for the scale?

Yeah, a 12x12 would set you up for a long time!

I got this stuff a few years ago.

It’s a few square feet for under$10. I got it at a local hobby/craft shop near the papier-mâché. I don’t have the packaging anymore, but it makes nice chai pink fence sections too.

Drilling out the bolts isn’t hard if you have a drill. Also means you can put the mesh inside the car windows instead of just outside of it.

Just to help anyone out..

https://www.dicemechanicgames.co.uk/contents

This is a really complete and concise guide on the nuts and bolts of breaking down and modifying the cars. While a lot can be self evident (i.e. to disassemble the car you drill out the rivets) it has real,y useful info like the size of drill bit that works etc.

Also..

https://www.scribd.com/doc/121765359/Weapons-For-Hot-Wheel-Cars

A really useful guide to scratch building weapons etc out of cheap, readily available craft shop materials and junk.

Finally..

http://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/28-abs-plasticard?id_category=28&n=77

A well known retailer already, but they sell some really useful checker plate texture plasticard as well as some other cool things. (Seriously considering investing in color flip paint for some of my cars!)

I though my mesh had come from GSW as well, but either they've discontinued it or I've misremembered as it doesn't appear to be there any more. Either way, there are A4 sheets in exactly the right scale available from hobby retailers.

There's some good stuff called Wire Form which is used for making support structures for clay modelling or paper mache etc. There's a couple different patterns and sizes to it, the smallest one works really well with matchbox/hotwheels scaled stuff. You can get it at hobboy stores or on Amazon and Ebay. This stuff is firm but flexible enough that it can be easily shaped to fit the windows and the car interiors.

Other options Tulle fabric which is a sort of diamond shaped mesh used for wedding veils, it's easy to cut and work with but might be a bit too flexible depending on your tastes. You can pick it up at Walmart or anywhere that carries fabrics.

You can also use window screen that can be bought at most hardware stores, there's a variety of different mesh patterns based on if they are made from metal wires or vinyl, the metal ones have a sort of woven texture to them while the vinyl screens will tend to be more flat. You can also use the mesh screens from cooking splatter guards, strainers or flour sifters most of which are very inexpensive and can be bought at dollar stores, grocery stores, target or walmart. The metal screens are harder to cut and can be pretty sharp on the cut edges so be careful working with them.

You can get diamond tread plating from Plastruct, Evergreen, or on Amazon, the 1/100 scale tends to look the most in scale, that works well for armor patching wheel wells or windows. There's also other styles of styrene sheeting that can be used. I have a few that look like vertical slats along the line of what you'd see on roll away security doors and windows. If you just need blank sheets of styrene a fairly cheap source is to use for sale signs that can be bought at hardware stores, there's lots of different thicknesses and it's usually less than half the price of hobby styrene.

Probably worth sharing, but Amazon has put up new stock of their big box of random Hot-Wheels cars.

The price and availability fluctuates a little but I got 50 cars for $39 and they were completely randomized making a fun start for Gaslands.

I would've paid $20 for that expansion. Its wild that there is more gameplay included in these .pdfs than some of the Necromunda Gang Wars i've bought. :-p
