The problem Yodrin is people like deffrdread in this thread. It's about bullying not critiquing the movie. Criticism of TLJ is entirely separate of racist/mysoginistic harrasment of an actress.

How good or bad TLJ is should practically go unmentioned in this specific thread. You do not say but.

Also there is a reason both TLJ threads got locked and I called for the closing of one of them. Hint: It wasn't because people disagreed with me.

I am full wel aware the actual problemtic fans are few and far between. But if such things are not treated with near total zero tolernace by everyone else. It only takes a few.

Please explain how my disinterest/hatred of Star Wars has anything to do with sexism and racism.
I just said she should distance herself from SW just like Harrison Ford. Star Wars has been awful since Phantom Menace. Were I an overpaid pretend artist I wouldn't want to be involved with a franchise that caters to rabid critical fans.

Adam Driver is "privileged", so you don't care or care less about the abuse he receives?

I am trying to separate racist/sexist abuse from other types of abuse. Kelly Tran gets all three. Does Adam Driver is my point?

To put it another way, probable all actors get abused on the internet by arsehol fans. No-one can approve that. But it looks like women and BME actors get a lot more abuse from racists and misgoynists. I am sure we would all agree that is unacceptable.

Asians are not minority. Basically it's everyone else that is a minority on the planet. And a Hollywood celebrity is most definitely not abused. Stating that would be an insult to the people -irrespectively of color, gender or race- that get really abused in life. Online trolls suck, but the internet does have an off switch and nobody can actually kill/rape/beat you through your monitor, no matter how loudly they boast that they will.

Also, why do you try to separate the "kinds of abuse" into different piles? This is what creates unequality in the first place.

Furthermore : "Kelly Tran gets all three. Does Adam Driver is my point?" does not lead anywhere. Example: Children in sweat shops get beaten and overworked for 50 cents a day. Does Kelly Tran is my point?" See? It does not lead anywhere. Don't create degrees of victimhood, it's unfair for the victims. All of them.

Lastly: "But it looks like women and BME actors get a lot more abuse from racists and misgoynists." It is obvious that men would not get abused by mysogynists. They would get abused by militant feminists though. Additionally, it "looks" like this because the women abuse stories hit the spotlight, while the men that are abused are socially expected to take it and don't complain, lest they be labeled as wussies.

Oh and "I am sure we would all agree that is unacceptable." 100% agreed.

Maybe it's different in your local, but over here in the states the Vietnamese are a minority. She went to school as a minority. She goes to work as a minority. She works in a industry surrounded by almost 100% not her blood lines nationality. Shes a minority.

Inequality. There is a difference between say... a crime of passion murder and serial killers. One of them is a person who in a fit lost control and did something horrible. That person deserves all the guilt and punishment for their crime. But a serial killer is not equivalent. It's a whole other scale of murder. It's premeditated and it's repeated. It's calculated. You wouldn't put the guy who stabbed his wife in a fit of rage in the same box as the nazis who organized the death camps. They are the same KIND of thing but they are not the same thing.

Bigotry is not the same as general douche baggery. They might both be bullying but one is in a class all it's own.

I hate that film,
I hate her Character.... (like pretty much every one in that film)

But I had no idea of the actresses name as it would not have occurred to me to blame her for the piece of gak film that TLJ was.

Abuse is abuse, shouldn't happen.

No big deal. She should distance herself from Star Wars anyway.
Why would anyone want to be associated with the Last Jedi?

No big deal? The only solution is to distance?

Not entirely sure that episode 9 will be a career advertiser for any of the actors if people keep being this angry.

Why do you associate this behavior with true starwars fans?

Yeah - they are hecklers. Hecklers will do/say anything to get their desired result. The feed off of other peoples pain. It is gross.

I feel sprry for this actress. She probably thought this would be her big break. Like Jake Lloyd and Ahmed Best.

What’s really sad is the number of people who can’t even post in support of the actress without also feeling the need to remind us how much they hated the film. A lot of so called adult SW “fans” need to grow the hell up.

If she had been in a Star Trek movie, she wouldn't have been harassed.

Her fault, really.

I feel like 'I hated The Last Jedi' has become the new 'I like My Little Pony'. You're going to know who feels that way, because it's going to end up in every single conversation it can be dragged into.

That's not what I was saying. This is a story about a young woman harassed off of social media. What everyone thinks about the movie that she was in has absolutely no place in it, the same way 'but' has no place in a genuine apology.

It's not the time or place to play film critic.

I think he is calling them by what they would call themselves. Fan, root word of Fanatic. The people who feel so strongly about Star Wars that they feel the need to tear these people down in the worst ways possible are fanatics. They care SO MUCH and that makes them TRUE Star Wars fans.

It's like the comic nerds who don't think you are a TRUE comic fan unless you own x number of long boxes.

Fandoms are toxic by their nature. Anyone who cares so much about something that matters so little needs to reassess what they give a gak about. Some are worse then others but they all have their bad apples who take their love of a product too far and make it something horrible. Like what you like and walk away.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

If I was in charge of Disney, I’d want to completely disassociate my company from such a toxic fandom. I’d honestly be thinking about pulling the plug on the whole franchise. Is trying to make more films (which it turns out is actually a financial risk after Solo’s poor box office) worth the risk of young actors being bullied by racist hate mail? Is it worth the person in charge of Star Wars receiving death threats? Is it worth being linked to a rabid internet hate mob?

I’d seriously be thinking about my duty of care as an employer to not be putting people in the firing line. I certainly would be determined now, not to do anything which would look like I was trying to appeal to the racist hate mob and their hours of YouTube videos about imagined SJW conspiracies.

In short, it be very close to saying, that’s it! No more Star Wars!

... and another lesson in how creating a cinematic universe that can churn out films on a regular basis, loved by both fans and critics, is nowhere near as easy as Marvel Studios makes it look.

But the Lord Himself wouldn't be able to save her if she said that the Enterprise C in Yesterday's Enterprise came from the same timeline as the Enterprise D in TNG.

She is famous cos of the movie she was in - although like I said I was not actually aware of her real name - hence its likely to get mentioned when discussing this story of abuse.

As I think everyone said - Bullying is bad, the internet is often fairly toxic place especially for those in the public eye, It also alllows people to interface with them in a way that protects the abuser.

None of that requires anyone to give their opinion in the movie here.

Is the issue that she is not famous enough for this to be a non-story? I mean, many hundred times as much terrible stuff (including racist stuff) is said about more famous people without there being a news story. Is this a proportionality issue? This actress is not that famous so this level of negativity counts differently than if it was aimed at a star?

The issue is that someone attracted targeted harassment until she quit doing something she liked.

It's an issue if it happens to anyone. This is a pretty straightforward concept. The internet's awesome, but some people can't help but be dicks on it.

Stating it that way, it seems like the threshold is how much she can (or rather can't) take. Again, attracting serious negativity is part of being a celebrity. I'm not saying it's justified but it is known. I mean, it is one of the most known things of things that are known. So I don't really know why "nobodies being mean to a celebrity" merits a news story or even an thread. As far as I can tell, this thread is effectively bait for people who want to continue arguing about TLJ despite that thread being closed recently. And as such I am also closing this thread.
