What the results show is that although a there are more people playing the latest edition, a significant number of people have been playing since 3rd edition, and a few of us are old school enough to have played since Rogue Trader This really is a community with a huge experience of WH40K

Started in 4th, played all through 5th. 6th was awful so didn't play then, which carried over to 7th. Seems I'm not alone, looks like a pretty decent dip in players at 6th edition.
Just got back into it for 8th, which for an 'outsider looking in' has 40k in a far better situation than the last couple editions.
While I was playing other tabletop games during 6th and 7th edition 40k was sort of a laughing stock in many gaming circles due to the poor balance, rules, and the impression that GW just didn't care.

8th isn't perfect, but it's an improvement. At least DeathStars are gone and most armies at least have some sort of a chance at being able to compete. I can't remember a time when the armies at tournaments were ever more diverse than they are now. There are some problem units, like anything golden riding a jetbike, but GW is also paying attention now and we have a good chance of things getting fixed a couple times per year.

Sometimes, you just gotta take something cause the model is freakin cool...
