I remember reading a post talking about the Centurions and I thought it was a pretty interesting take. I mean consider that a Marine chapter has at most 1,000 Marines and Scouts plus support and command elements (so maybe 1,200-1,500 at max strength assuming a lot of support elements and excluding the Black Templars who basically have a small Legion running around). Now in practice you likely have around 1,000 in total due to losses to injuries or deaths. And despite this you need to uphold a massive rejoin of space and are often expected to be supporting multiple campaigns at the same time. You also have limited resources in the means of Terminator suits for boarding actions for Space Hulks and enemy vessels. Thus the Centurion was born. By creating an armoured frame that could be mounted into existing armour it can be dropped if damaged to allow the bearer to continue fighting in their regular armour, but when wearing it the bearer is granted the ability to bring more firepower to bear than they could normally manage. Their large size also allows them to better shield the battle brothers behind them in tight spaces like Space Hulk corridors.

I mean, yeah, the look is a bit goofy, but the premise makes a LOT of sense. Limited manpower + limited resources = time to add firepower to existing manpower and use new resources to do it.

Yeah well, back in my day we had Dreadnought armor, and Tactical Dreadnought armor. Harrumph.

And Centurions wouldn't fit in those Space Hulk hallways.

I get what you're saying about the premise though. But man, they look goofy.

Dreadnoughts are fitting in even less hallways than Centurions are. And considering the limited number of suits of Terminator available (unless you're Dark Angels, but I still wonder how they managed to keep so many suits considering most of their wargear on Caliban likely went BOOM) it's not like they can just hand those out like candy.

It's actually something I like about Gravis armour: it basically looks at the same issue and approaches it a little differently and creates something that is ultimately different (in Dark Millennium they call it "nimble" compared to Terminator armour, which is likely why the save isn't as good. A sacrifice of protection for increased mobility makes sense after all). Plus with some minor reposing (pointing the sword down, turning the head to be looking past the right shoulder) and the Gravis Captain looks more like he's turning to meet an enemy than showing off how much ale he drank when hanging out with the Space Wolves the night prior.

It's a Space Opera which basically means it does what it wants.

Actually, thinking about the point that was raised about Centurions, the Repulsor is basically like the tank equivilant of that: extra firepower for a force that desperately needs more guns to counter the hordes it'll inevitably face quite regularly.

Arguing about what looks good to someone is pointless it’s all personal taste. I love the repulsor. I like how busy the turret looks and always put the gunner in them. The chassis and the weapons are in different spruce so there is hope of alternative versions. I would like to see one with a bigger turret and an energy weapon of some sort, no transport and a stripped down transport only one. I personally can’t stand the centurions. But some of you guys lone them. That’s life. I’ve seen enough people married to ugly folk to know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Hence, the Tactical Dreadnought Armor.

Though Centurions and boxnaughts aren't too dissimilar, size-wise.

The thing is . . . those are fluff justifications for not having many suits of Terminator armor. Lost tech, stagnant progress, etc. A big part of the lore, to be sure. But then Centurions seem to go right against that by being a new, innovative thing. It bugs me.

They coulda been handled better, aesthetically and functionally. But that's the last I'll say about it for now.

Centurion is a STC design though recovered following the Horus Hersy when the high lords sent out massive exploration fleets in an effort to find new STCs that would give the IoM a technological edge over the forces of chaos.

sadly the biggest problem with centurions from a fluff POV is GW put the fluff out in a PDF that no one purchased and the codex info on them amounted to "here they are"

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Nah it is. It is certainly fiction and certainly has to do with futuristic concepts. It doesn't actually have to do "science" to be scifi. Sci fi is a general term anyways. I'm basically saying...you know this is fiction right?

If we fail to anticipate the unforeseen or expect the unexpected in a universe of infinite possibilities, we may find ourselves at the mercy of anyone or anything that cannot be programmed, categorized or easily referenced.

GW really loved the "we've had this for thousands of years" thing. Makes me glad the Primaris, while being a thing that's been secretly in the works for 10k years, wasn't "always there in the background, unmentioned".

I can just imagine there being a moratorium on mentioning the space marines who're 2' taller than their battle brothers. Someone asks a space marine why some are so much taller and the space marines just go back to their dropships and declare exterminatus.

It [i[]would[/i] explain why Silas Albrec is so freaking huge (at least it's easier to make conversions for him now?) but probably not. That said it does make me chuckle to think about.

In the fluff they're definitely not two feet taller. Look at the anniversary poster, the height difference is barely noticeable. Half a foot at most.

I don't think it would explain Silas*, but I think Sons of Antaeus were a prototype Primaris Chapter. In fact I think the whole Cursed Founding was an early test program for the Primaris project.

(*Then again, Excorcists are a Dark Founding chapter, so it is possible they were a part of the Primaris test program too...)
