And I put it as the best portrayal both visually AND acting wise of Peter Parker to date. I was never sold on Toby, and Tom is good, but just doesn't "do it" for me, I guess. Whereas to me, much like Henry Caville with Superman, ASM was like Parker was ripped straight out of the comic and onto the screen.

I have to admit, I don't think I ever saw the 'amazing' spider man films, but I found Toby's films fairly forgettable and absolutely couldn't stand the new one, turned it off after about 10 minutes of gritting my teeth against the kid's endless, mindless babble. I just couldn't take it. I'm not sure if his behavior was supposed to be typical of 'today's youth' or what, but I don't remember him being that horrid as part of the ensemble in the two Avengers films (Infinity War and Iron Man vs. Captain America).

Part of it, I think is a personal thing- not having any connection to Spiderman. Of all the Marvel comics (barring the fantastic four, which I found absolutely dreadful), Spidey was the one that never clicked with me. It was down there with Superman and a lot of other DC titles as a sort of dull, uninteresting thing. I knew vaguely what they were going for but didn't care.

Spidey was a neat book because you had this guy who was driven to do the right thing through loss and guilt, yet he was screwing up majorly along the way. There was an issue where he tries to stop the Juggernaut from killing someone. Tries. Another was an annual or something with Wolverine where a female bad/good character tricks Spidey into punching her in the face full force, thinking it was Wolverine. Obviously she didn't survive it. The rest of the issue had him flashing back to throwing that punch. He couldn't live with himself for that one action. It was crushing him. It's kind of what makes Spider-Man Spider-Man.

Right, and if they'd established the character as some crazy alien/animal fanatic the scene would have been fine. But this was the character who minutes before had seen a room of alien corpses, freaked out because they were aliens, and fled. Then gotten lost, even though he was the guy who mapped the area with his drones.

I think the annoyance comes from how the same result could have easily been gotten without the character being an idiot. He sees the creature, backs away slowly, and then accidentally bumps into or treads on one behind him while he's focused on the first one. Same result, doesn't violently drag you out of the drama of the moment because the character's behaviour is so inconsistent.

Robocop is a pretty good example. I re-watched the original movie and it's a terrible movie full of flimsy political statements and plot holes you could drop a small starship through. It never aimed at being anything other than a quick, explosive ridden romp. The problem is that people remeber the slightly better TV show and then get surprised when the movie can't replicate the plot developments of the multi-hour show. It was never a reboot of the TV Show, it was a reboot of the movie - and a decent one at that.

Whoa there. Robocop was a politically-driven sci-fi parody, on purpose. Paul Verhoeven is quite well known for movies in this vein, Starship Troopers being another example. The problem is that many people don't seem to recognize his sense of humor and assume that movies like Robocop and Starship Troopers are intended to be taken seriously, which they aren't. As a tongue-in-cheek sendups of sci-fi tropes, and really as comedies, both Robocop and Starship Troopers are brilliant. All of the B movie schlock and gore is just icing on the cake. That's precisely why reboots of 80's and 90's sci-fi and action movies rarely carry the spirit of the original; in those decades, filmmakers were willing to have a little bit of fun at the expense of their source material and even their audiences, whereas most reboots take an intentionally campy subject and treat it like it's supposed to be taken with a straight face. I for one have a lot more patience for a movie that knows it is silly and plays up to that in clever ways than one that insults my intelligence by asking me to take it more seriously than is warranted.

Is it Covenant or Prometheus where a woman is about to be crushed by a tall, falling object that is only a few feet wide (or she's only a few feet from the edge of) and she never thinks to run to the side?

Dumb.

Re Robocop, I hated that remake because large parts of it were filmed in the city I lived in at the time and having to deal with the incredibly entitled and self-important crews was irritating and exhausting. Also, it reminded me that the city I lived in looked like what the studio thinks Detroit will look like in the future.

To be fair. It wasnt a few feet wide. It was as wide as the derelict ship from alien 1 is tall which is much bigger then a house. Remember how tell the room with the fossilized jockey was. That just one deck. Remember how low down kane had to be lowered to reach the eggs? Thats just one more deck.

So I went back and looked. You're right, it isn't only a few feet wide, but she is only a few feet from the edge of it, which I allowed for in my first post.

She runs about a hundred feet forward instead of five feet to her left.

Dumb dumb dumb.

I wasnt debating how dumb that movie is. Just the size of the promethian ships. They are fething massive.

But running to the side isnt even the dumbest bit. The geologist who made a 3d map of the promethian structure that he could access from his wrist computer is one of the 2 guys who got lost.

I have never liked Spider-Man so that one off was awesome.

She was a spy that all the inteligence agencies wanted alive so they could get all the secrets out of her - torture etc. Wolverine was going to kill her when she asked - Spiderman stopped him and then as you said she tricked him into puncing her. Yeah there is a sequnce as he is going home every other panel is that punch. I assume its all forgotten after that like most annuals etc.

Really enjoyed Homecoming but partly cos Tony Stark and friends are in it so much.

I just think in Promethius the DIrector had a number of scenes he wanted to show and was not especially interested in how or why the characters got to that point.

Prometheus suffered from Prequelitis more than anything. You're tied to try to sew tension when you have to somehow wind up at a VERY SPECIFIC POINT and that's usually where the ball gets dropped.

There's also the topic title which is less bloggy and more discussiony.

The locked steampunk thread was "Why I find Steampunk boring". It is not asking a question to be answered, it is just stating that the OP finds it boring and will be listing their reasons.

This one is asking a question "Why do so many remakes/reboots suck?" That is more inviting to discussion.

THIS is the bad writing part.
It's completely understandable that in a movie full of human characters, some of these characters make mistakes because they are dumb, in panic, distracted, and so on.
But in Prometheus the person specifically selected for that specific task feths it up. Remember that this is a crew selected for a space mission by a multi-billionaire.
But the stupid starts earlier, as it seems that most of the crew did not even exactly know why they were there. Compare with Alien. Everyone has a reason to be there, even if Ash has a secondary mission. The only thing that is discussed is the Bonus Situation.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Have to say thought the new Predator film was tremendously entertaining. Honestly, I don't think I have laughed so hard at a film in the cinema for some time. Possibly just fell short of Borat.
Olivier Munn's character (chasing after the Predator at the start) was fantastic, again if it was trying to be serious just those few scenes would have destroyed the film all by themselves.

But what was more entertaining was how Shane Black (the director) had been pitching it as some ultra-serious hi-fi remake of the original - I'm not quite sure what his angle was, unless it had been edited heavily beyond those interviews?!

I suppose if you were after a properly 'serious' Predator film (in the vein of Predators) you might have been disappointed. But, the first one is actually pretty camp by today's standards (to take nothing away from the film - it was an Arnie classic, and I love it) and it was almost made with the impression that there was no way to match that first one, so they may as well have some fun.

It was far superior to the AvP films, but then that's probably as low a benchmark as you can possibly set!

I just watched the new(ish) Batman vs. Superman... and man, does it fall under this discussion.

Watching the movie, I could see spots where they were flagrantly ripping off scenes from other (mainly MCU) movies in a desperate attempt to steal some of Marvel's success. In the process, they pretty much trampled all over anything resembling either Batman, Superman, or Lex Luthor in the process....

Not sure when the interview in which the "ultra-serious" statement was uttered, but Shane Black's Predator movie was indeed the victim/beneficiary (taste depending) of quite a few rounds of reshoots and edits, for what its worth. Not that any of that is abnormal for a big budget movie nowadays, but insider sources leading up to the movies release stated that the final product was very much different from the original cut. We had a few pages of discussion about this movie, from its first teaser trailer to its release, somewhere in the Geek Media subforum, if you wanted to peruse!
