anyway, as long as the story is good, i can let the animation go.... please dont be ultramarines.
read da article its blood angels.
My bad i was not clear, Ultramarines the movie, not the chapter, i can see its blud angles, the least dank of the angles
yep, both the animation and the story, both were terrible.
And it was written by the BL favourite Dan Abnett and had really solid (and probably quite expensive) voice actors. But yeah, it was crap.
I've discovered that just because Abnett's name is on it doesn't mean its good (in my opinion anyway). I hated his book in the Beast Arises Series (im not particularly fond of that series in general), and Prospero Burns. I hated Ultramarines. Legion was only OK.

No argument here, but many people on Dakka seem to think that he's some sort of Neil Gaiman.
As always YMMV and from what I've heard, hearsay etc., Dan did an early draft but it has been revised quite a bit over time into the slog we all know and.. something something.
Makes me want to dig out the review a friend did at the time it was released, 2011 or so?

Didn't someone jokingly call it the Ultramarines Christmas Special?

We’re bringing the grim darkness of the far future to life like never before. Get ready for epic battle, heroic sacrifice, loads of explosions, brutal close-combat chainsword duels, and some pathos-laden dialogue that’ll fill your belly with fire and stretch your heart strings to breaking.
I'm worried they will make the marines into more of glorious heroes than monstrous psychopathic butchers lackey of a fascistic dystopia. Which is less grimdark, in my opinion.
Also the more heroic the sacrifice the less grimdark the story, the most useless and meaningless the sacrifice, the more grimdark the story???

I love how this guy is a lauded as a hero for his amateur fan film stuff and now suddenly it’s “PS1 quality” because he now has GW’s backing. Sheesh. Guys.
I’m cautiously optimistic. It’s hard to see how it will turn out to be anything but animated Bolter Porn but let’s wait and see!

Just the usual bs. I'd like to see them do better. I can't count the number of animated series whose first season was a lot more janky than later seasons, because they were on a shoestring budget trying to see if they could succeed.

It often feels like there's only two types of CGI on the internet - whatever the current state of the art is and "oh noes so bad my eyes!"
Comparisons to PS1 era CGI are absurd, and only sound uninformed at best and either hysterical or intentionally malicious at worst. No bloody wonder GW still doesn't allow comments on their YT channel - they'd have so much pointless nerdrage to wade through every time they did... anything.
It's an in house project by a tabletop games company, not the latest Blizzard cinematic, so I'll look at it like that and say looks okay, let's see how it turns out.
Peoples expectations are a bit high for a modelling company
They use CAD but I don't think they can use that for CGI.
I completely agree its just silly to be angry about it. I know student projects that had months in the bakery and don't look half as good as that trailer.
ummm...?
I watched the stream yesterday and am now even more jazzed about it(not that I'll start an army but).

Look at the first ten episodes of helsreach and compare to the last 2. The last 2 are PS1 while the first 10 are inventive, daring and artistic. They use the medium of animation and create a feeling. The last 2 (similar to this trash movie) are standard old man CGI. All tech and no art.

Yes, it's not Disney budget. Who cares? If it's good, I'll watch it. Kudos to the Helsreach guy for his hard work and grabbing GW's attention so he can do more.

Ahh ok, so the problem isn't GW bashing, it's just garden variety anti-CGI art snobbery.

You are confusing me. I find the CGI on the GW thingy better, from a purely technical standpoint (not passing judgement on artistic merit because irrelevant here) than on the PS1.
I guess YMMV?

We forgive him for that as long as he does more Eisenhorn stuff.
I think the main issue some people are having is we get this level of CGI after years of frankly amazing CGI cinematics in GW video games for years. I understand they're operating on a much smaller budget, but as a gut reaction, it's disappointing to see something that's quality wise a step backwards after seeing GW's rendered so much better before this.
I also have a feeling this is going to be a GW site exclusive. The level of CGI quality on display wouldn't be able to compete with other, much better quality CGI cartoons in a larger mass market like Netflix.

Look, I understand that for some of you, you're just excited that it exists. I respect that, and I can empathize.
Hell, it might even turn out to be pretty good.
But from my perspective, we meet two problems.
1) Because of the change in methods for content consumption and the resulting change in how shows are made (i.e. the streaming model and the state of current video games), the expectations of what constitutes "good" to those of us that regularly consume animated media have changed. 8 or 9 years ago a super generic, dark, violence-focused 1-minute teaser trailer of some shiny space marine helmets and bolter fire would have been met with more hope. "Hey, I remember Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles, this looks promising! I loved the cinematics for the Dawn of War game, this could be wonderful!" Now, however, we live in a world inundated with quality media, at both the "indie" level and with major studio backing. This teaser trailer feels dated, but not in a good, nostalgia-laden way.
2) The more opinion-driven argument of #1 aside, from a technical standpoint, the animation on display looks legitimately old. Old like the intro to a generic action game that would could have released in the early 2000's on the Playstation 2. Hell, the comparison to the cinematics to Tekken3 on the Playstation 1 is really close. This point isn't about how you "feel" they look, or if you care that a new show doesn't have top-tier animation, but is instead only about the sheer technical aspect. Watch the trailer again, and look at the Titan specifically. Look at the flat textures on the foot. Look at the jagged angles going up to the knee, and the flat textures there. This. Looks. Old.
If you had shown me this without context, I would have asked what this old PC game this was a cinematic for, and likely would have just assumed it was for Dawn of War. The first one.

'Angels of Death' even got a mention on the SyFy Channel's SyFy Wire:
Next, another trailer — but this time for a TV show. Why a TV series inside the gaming roundup? Because it’s Warhammer 40,000 and it’s coming from some of the most talented fans in the tabletop miniature community.
According to Polygon, an animated series is being developed, by Games Workshop with Electronic Arts cinematic designer Richard Boylan and the rest of the team behind the fan-made cartoon series Helsreach and live-action short film Guardsman, called Angels of Death. Named for the red-clad Blood Angels legion of the Space Marines appearing in the show, this will be the first official Warhammer 40K series — one that hopes to replicate the series’ dark, shadowy intensity. And that’s all captured in the first teaser for the show.
The animation style is as brutal and iconic as the game itself, staying away from anime conventions like Castlevania[i]’s adaptation or the uncanny cartoonishness of [i]Pokémon[i] or [i]Sonic. This is a crunchy realism...well, as real as something featuring mechs and Space Marines can be. “We’re bringing the grim darkness of the far future to life like never before,” Games Workshop said. “Get ready for epic battle, heroic sacrifice, loads of explosions, brutal close-combat chainsword duels, and some pathos-laden dialogue that’ll fill your belly with fire and stretch your heart strings to breaking.” Realism? Check. Chainsword duels? Double check.
“I’m pretty limited in what I can say, other than myself and Boman Modine, the producer/writer of Guardsman were approached to create an animated series,” Boylan said. “It’s basically going to be like my Helsreach series only with full Games Workshop support and an actual budget, which is awesome on their part!” It’s a fan creator’s dream come true, and they’ll bring their finished dream show to YouTube in 2019 through the Warhammer TV channel.
