There are very few companies (admittedly I can't think of another one at the moment) who do what GW does - symbols on 1's and 6's is stupid...moreso when they're similar symbols. I know loads of guys who haven't bothered buying them because they don't want to have double symbols, and don't want to count up "scratch marks" for pips, etc.

It's as if GW doesn't want money when it comes to dice.

Whether having a 1 or 6 icon is preferably is generally up to your game. In 40K for instance, 90% of the time, a '6' is preferable to a one. There are the occasional exceptions (morale, and not wishing to roll double 6's for perils), but generally speaking a result of the '6' face is a positive. I don't believe symbols make the dice any easier to read (perhaps for an opponent at distance), but it's not about simplicity it's about the joy custom or special dice bring to you. End o' story.

I routinely order custom Chessex dice for my primary armies (and I likewise order sets as gifts for my buddies for Christmas, etc.). My standard order is 20x Colour A, and 10x Colour B (for use when rolling mixed weapons, etc.). I strive to find good colour combos which stand out from eachother and are generally easy to read.

My custom Craftworld dice for example. The Eldar ones are particularly fun because sooooo many of their damn weapons only resolve effects when rolling a '6', etc. Again, it's not easier to read than normal dice, but it makes me happy. I don't need to justify it to anyone. My group knows that all of my dice have symbols on 6's and so do most of theirs. I have only one fellow gamer who uses GW special dice.

I actually prefer having the big symbol on the 1 face, I always thought that technically it meant better weight distribution than it would if you just have one small bit cut out.

Personally I dont give a gak, you can use any dice you like as long as you let me use them as well if I so wish.

Oh yeah. That particular thing put me off GW dice rather completely. That's beyond impractical to the point of causing arguments.

Preach OP, symbols on the 6 are great but I can't stand symbols on the 1. I just don't like the idea of paying money for fancy dice with your symbol only to see it whenever you're failing at something

No symbols on dice, period. I want dice rolls to be clear and quick to interpret.

OK, 6 blank faces is pretty clear and quick, but I'm not sure what the point would be.

The fun part is I'll bet literally everyone else here understood what he meant just fine.

Oh, everyone here understood what he meant, but he made an unclear comment about wanting to be clear, which is the exact analogue for everyone here understanding that symbol = 6. If he can expect others to understand his unclear comment, then others can expect him to understand symbol = 6.

If everyone including you understood what he meant, then there was no need for your initial post.

Wow, it's like you failed Reading, so I will repeat myself...

If he can expect others to understand his unclear comment, then others can expect him to understand symbol = 6.

Which adds... what, exactly, to the ongoing discussion?

I'm not ready to go quite that far yet, as in the past John has made good points.

Just not here.

Its a real bummer too. Especially when the symbols are similar. "Which skull was the 6 and which is the 1?" The kill team dice have 3 different symbols, a kill team skull, a regular skull, and a faction symbol. At least make the same skull be the 1s across all 8 dice included in the set.

Just two cents added.
Give me the pip markings on all facings.
I will explain why my preference: And I understand CLEARLY this was such a rare and ridiculous situation, it is only worth what an anecdote is worth. I am certainly not accusing anyone who likes symbols of this behavior.
I spent a very long 3 hours at a local tournament having to watch a youngster roll groups of dice that included symbols on the 1's and 6's (some dice had both, some had only one). He of course tried to count all symbols as 6's. So for me, the symbol (and more importantly the way companies have intermixed which number gets it) opened a door for him to cheat. The pile of dice got selectively smaller for Overwatch (doubling his "hits" if you didn't hover over each roll). He absolutely knew what he was doing, rolled 20 or so mixed dice including 4-5 different color combos, and hid behind the I'm a kid excuse while his father at the next table heckled anyone for being TFG if they said something.
In rounds 2 and 3 he did it to those players as well.
So, not a fan of symbols, although I see the direct correlation between myself buying dark purple dice with bone pips to match my eldar, and someone buying dice with the Ultramarine symbol for their favorite heroic defenders of humanity.

But for actual game play? Just plan D6 if you please. The one's GW used to do in the cube are ideal. Nice looking, good pip contrast, and small enough to not demolish models when rolled. I'm even weird enough to want uniformity in dice. When you're rolling multi-coloured ones it just doesn't sit right with me.

I love different coloured dice - means I can roll for 2/3 weapon types at once. With a game like dicehammer you really need to do all you can to streamline it.

Huge pet-peeve of mine... I hate it when my opponent has to explain his fething dice to me.

I like my GW dice with a skull for the 1, but wholly agree that not having consistency across dice is a nightmare.

It's too easy to unintentionally make a mistake and far too easy to intentionally cheat.

Ugh.

Jut remembered a similar thing from a recent game. Had the displeasure of playing a Tau player who insisted on using the 40k command dice as his normal dice. Utterly fething frustrating, especially when I called him out on it and said he could use my dice instead. He knew exactly what he was doing as these are a pain in the arse to read.
