I always felt like an under appreciated but crucial part of a good horror movie was the drawn out character set up. Not only do we need to get to know these characters to are what happens to them and “put ourselves in their shoes”, but those scenes build tension in a way that just walking through dark corridors never can. You know as you get to know them that some of them are going to die badly.


I haven’t seen a lot of horror recently, but I did see a short film that I liked called The Quiet Room. I liked the way the film introduced the characters and then ratcheted up the horror.
