We've got a fairly pretty pile of cash at this point and as soon as we're able, we're planning on thanking our lovely government for the great handling of this whole situation by spending 100% of the amount of it we plan to spend in another country. Good luck pal. One of the nastiest surprises of trying to buy a house is that my insane, irrational fear of spending money that I don't have and leading a completely debt-free life had resulted in me having zero credit score at all.
Basically I was able to build alternative lines of credit by showing that I'd been renting for 4 years and had never missed a payment, and had been paying utility bills for the same amount of time without ever missing a payment. Dodged a real bullet.
