Holy crusade is pretty religious yes. So why do they not use the emperors holy symbol? These in universe people have no idea what a cross is.

And if they draw from comtemporerly or historic sources, why the Christian crusade? Where are the moons of the Muslims? The hammers of the vikings? The candelabra of the yews? The small fat men? An avatar of the divine? The five pointed star of the ancient onse. All of these would make as much sence.

The moons are on Teclis and friends and the hammers are on the Stormcast in AOS The Roman Imperial Aquilla is all over Imperial forces.

A cross is a very basic symbol, like a O in Noughts and Crosses (Tic Tac Toe).

Its not like its the specific cross (the crucifix) that the Christians use as there main symbol.

To be fair, it's hard to make a "cross" (vertical line + horizontal line, perpendicular to one another) that doesn't bear some resemblance to any version of Christian symbology, but that's more because there are so very fething many forms of the Christian cross.

Because a cross is a cross cultural and universal thing to put on shields? we have them on Polan slavic tribe nation shields, and we sure as hell were not christian in 7th century. Neither were the Scythians, Pars, the great shields users that were turkish or the warriors that were fighting under Timur.

Ah and some vikings put cross on their shields too, before they were christian.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.
