I have:
Imperial Guard
Sisters of Battle
Space Wolves
Custodes
Grey Knights

Flames of War
USSR 1945
Heer 1944
US Army 1944
Commonwealth 1944

Star Wars Legion
Rebel Alliance

Plus starter sets for 4 DZC factions and Battletech Clans.

So I would say I'm a "many armies" kind of person. With regards to 40k, it's a point of frustration at this point, because I hate buying books. They eat into my budget for miniatures.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

Space Marines (custom Ultima founding chapter)
Space Wolves
Chaos Space Marines (Black Legion, I'd always said I'd start them if and when Abaddon got a plastic mini )
Sisters of Battle
Custodes
Grey Knights
and I have some Imperial Knights as well

Definitely a main army guy. I have death guard in addition to my orks, but they are essentially just the army for when I don't want to play orks for any reason.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

A bit of both, really.

I mean, for 40k I've had, since 2nd Ed, four of what I'd consider 'Main' armies:

Ultramarines
Tyranids
Imperial Guard
Chaos Space Marines

They are the ones that have the most in them - 10's of thousands of points each - with miniatures that stem from the dawn of time right through to some of the latest releases.

But I have a lot of smaller armies (Deathwatch, Craftworld Eldar, Tau, Death Guard, 1K Sons, AdMech, Custodes, Knights, Orks, Genestealer Cults, etc.) that are just there either to loan to people, or to use when I don't feel like using the other armies.

I would consider myself a "Main army" currently, meaning that I only have one fieldable army as of right now. My current project is to paint up a company of Crimson Fists. However, I have plans on five other factions on top of an idea for a home made chapter of Space Marines, but I have not assembled and primed any of them yet, so they are not considered to be fieldable by a long shot. My plan is to make Orktober actually Orky this year, so at least I will have two armies that are fieldable.

I have multiple 40k armies (and even more Lord of the Rings armies) and I love working on all of them. When I start to get burned out of one thing, I can switch gears and move to another.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

Used to be very much a main army guy with my Black Templars, then went on a bit of a splurge and now I have many armies and I kind of hate it. Having so many projects really stresses me out.

Just change your perspective.
Play one army for a bit while building/painting/etc another. Then switch. Play what you've been working on & repeat the build/paint/etc. with a different one. Repeat until you've cycled through all your projects. This way you've only got one project active at a time.

Used to have
Sisters
Necrons
White Scars
LatD
Chaos Daemons

but sold them a few years ago. I left my first army - Eldar and some Tyranids in hopes of WH40K becoming a game worth playing at some point in the future.

For Warmachine I've had the Protectorate, Circle, Skorne and Cryx and I've just started A Song Of Ice And Fire with both Starks and Lannisters looking forward to owning a Targaryen army. So I guess I'm a "many armies" guy

Not only do I enjoy the modelling and painting, so I need a constant supply of new models, but I also run demos for the games I play, so different armies come in handy.

Main army guy, mainly because of time constraints. I simply don't have the time to keep multiple armies up to date. Orks and Necrons are fully playable forces, Sisters and Black Templars are fun side projects that I use for variation and might turn into full armies in the future (if I ever get the time). I was planning to try to get a sizeable Sisters force this year, but then they went and announced a bunch of new Ork models and the new codex (I thought we'd have to wait until next year) so I guess the Sisters will have to wait...

Main army: Orks
Secondary army: Necrons
Started collecting: Adepta Sororitas
Painted some because it's fun: Black Templars & Harlequins

Did have an army back in 2nd ed: Ultramarines

Oguhmek paints Orks (and Necrons): 'Ere we go!

When I came back to 40K in 8th edition (after last playing in 1st edition Rogue Trader) I collected a firstborn Ultramarines army out of nostalgia. It's not exactly what you'd call competitive though.

When Index Renegade Knights came out I started collecting a new army. Now in 9th edition I have 1,800 pts of Chaos Knights vs 1,200 pts of Ultramarines. I mostly play Chaos Knights now, and in fact I've only bought one Ultramarines unit since I started collecting Chaos Knights.

Previously I painted more than played, but now everything's fully painted I'm trying to play more.

I used to be a "many many many armies" kinda guy. Dark Eldar, Black Templar, Tyranids, Necrons, Dark Angels, Chaos Space Marines, Orks and a smattering of Kroot Mercenaries (when they were a thing). Not to mention the WHFB/AoS stuff.

I've pared it back to focus on Chaos, buuuut I have 3 flavours of Chaos (Death Guard, Marines, Knights) at the moment and plan on some Thousand Sons in the future.

Currently I only have 1 army battle ready, which is my Death Guard - so right now I'd say I'm a One Army kinda guy, but with more armies in the production queue.

Main Army!

5000 pts of, and im sad that I even have to say this, firstborn marines. All bought within the last 3 years maybe.

Ultramarines. Simply because they have all the unique models, all the transfers, and they can be played in any style.

They'll never be played competitively. Only how they would be expected to in the setting.

That's not a bad idea I think I'll give it a go, thanks. I think it was just the spreading too thin side of things but this would help.

I think this is my philosophy too.

I couldn't imagine 40K without firstborn marines, but I also have a competitive army which I play most of the time.

When I say competitive I don't mean tournament, just casual, but without losing all the time

I have a few armies, but I only really play with AdMech.

I've never had a full knight or Harlequins game, I have about 4 Black Templars and 1 Death Guard.

I like variety and it stops me getting too sick painting (when I'm painting) but I really like AdMech.

I plan to have a knight game soon and maybe try the Harlequins out in a few month when a few more are painted.

Approx armies
9000pts AdMech (Main army)
7000pts Black Templars (original army)
3500pts Death Guard (lazy side project)
2000pts Imperial Knights (extension of AdMech)
2000pts Harlequins (fun side project)

I'd probably be a many armies person if there were more armies I was really in love with. As it stands I only play Necrons and Tzeentch (of both the Thousand Sons and Daemons variety), mostly Necrons.

Nids are my first love. Love my babies, big and smol. They are my biggest force by a LOT.

But when I started building an Inquisition-based GK list in 6th... things sort of exploded...

A pile of Inquisitors, imperial vehicles, and proxy henchmen needed some actual Grey Knights...

I really liked the idea of an Inquisitorial core-force in 6th, bringing in small detachments of allied GK/Guard/Sisters/whatever, but never got around to it.

And then GK/Inq got split...

And Allies neutered...

And AdMech came out! Love my little toasterbois as much as my bugs.

Then when 9e started, I split the big Starter set with a Necron friend and picked some Iron Hands conversion bits so my toasterbois could have some friends.

Then my Iron Hands wanted more dreadnoughts, and I saw that the Start Collecting Deathwatch box came with a VenDred and a bunch of other cool stuff. I mean, a VenDred alone is like $50, and my LGS had the DW SC at $80, and I had Inquisitorial longing anyway...

Long story short: I have a problem.

Many Armies person but good lord I wished I stuck to 2 at most. I get bored painting the same old thing and really like to try new playstyles - that's irritating as I also hate painting itself but refused to use unpainted models. As such I have weird army list to account for what looked nice at the time.

I used to be a "many armies" person. I had 4 40k armies and 4 WHFB armies back when I first got into the hobby about 11 years ago. All were at least 1.5k pts, possibly all 2k+ pts.

But over the years, as my tastes in wargaming, my free space available, and my desire/need to conserve money as much as possible, I'm now a "main army" person, altho I still always try to have a 2nd/backup army, if not for variety's sake just to have 2 in case I want to demo a game to someone. But reason for 2nd army aside, I have learned to really enjoy the idea of sort of "getting everything out of" an army, while also restricting myself from what the army allows. Sort of like creativity through limitation. For instance, I used to think "I want a shooty army so I'll get Tau, and I want a CC army so I'll get Orks". Now, I just think "I'll try to make a CC list and a shooty list for X army (or as CC/shooty as possible)" or something similar.

I currently have Nids for 40k, but hope to maybe get Orks, CSM, HQs, or even some Imperium mix down the line (just one of those options, not all lol). For MCP, I can make an X-Men and Brotherhood list, but am sticking to Brotherhood as my main faction. They have 2 leaders anyway, so I can still get more variety of lists.

All other games I no longer play, I've still kept just one army for. Just in case. I think I do have 2 warbands for Warcy tho.

currently playing: Warhammer 40k: Kill Team

other favorites:

I believe the proper classification for a lot of us is a "too many armies" person.

10k of Eldar and I wouldn't consider them my main.

Ten different marine armies of loyalist and non-loyalist factions

More 40k armies than 40k time ...

I tend to have a main army, but the main army I play can change over time.

2nd Ed - Dark Angels as main army, Orks and Imperial Guard as hobby projects that grew into playable armies by the end of the edition
3rd Ed - Imperial Guard as main army with Drukhari as a slow-grow hobby project (3rd Ed was not kind to my 2nd Ed Dark Angels)
4th Ed - Split between Dark Angels and Imperial Guard (and helping my son get his Tyranids up and running - why Nids?)
5th Ed - Imperial Guard with Dark Angels as every now and then (and helping my son get his Orks up and running - why Orks?)
6th Ed - Dark Angels
8th Ed - Dark Angels with some Imperial Guard (Scions as a hobby project) and Drukhari to keep things fresh
9th Ed - Dark Angels with Necrons as a hobby project that grew into a playable army

In Flames of War I have too many armies...

Like many others I consider myself fitting in both categories. I have main army in both 40k and AoS plus some side projects which most come from split boxes (I decided to keep both sides from DV since I liked the minis).

In 40k I have:
4k Dark Angels
2k CSM (3 x Dark Vengeance + some additions)
1k Space Wolves
Tiny Drukhari from split Piety and Pain

In AoS:
3k Skaven
1k+ SCE agreed to split Dominion
>1k DoK from split Shadow and Pain
