It’s also in keeping with the other two films. The ghosts aren’t just there. They’re there because the big bads are on the rise.
Also, did anyone else notice they didn’t really refer to the second movie. Like, at all?

I saw it tonight and quite enjoyed it. I thought the kids in particular Podcast and Spengler were very good.
I don't think it needed to reference the second movie, it would have probably been a bit gratuitous if they'd done so tbh.

I totally get the Force Awakens comparison but I feel it's what Force Awakens should have been, if that makes sense?
But in terms of Ghostbusters Afterlife, I thought the casting was perfect - with the exception, actually, of Finn Wolfhard. Not saying he wasn't great in it, but he didn't remind me of Peter Venkman in the way that Podcast reminded me of Ray or Phoebe reminded me of Spengler.
To be fair, Venkman was a creeper, which is out of touch for a kid version.
Lets not forget, his establishing scene was nonsense-masquerading-as-psychology (appropriate to 80s attitudes towards the discipline, less so now), hitting on a college kid half his age (nope), and electrocuting a guy repeatedly to hit on said college girl (absolutely not).
I don't know how you'd do a 'kid version' of that guy. All that's left is a Gordon Gecko-lite 'greed is good' capitalism yay.

There's a rumour that the original cast didn't like the second movie and want it forgotten, but Jason Reitman Confirms Ghostbusters 2 is Still Canon in Afterlife:

GB2 is mostly Ghost Busters 1 with less jokes. A lot of people really love the movie, and Vigo is awesome (though the actor is a real life monster), but it's just not as great a movie.
Also, the story goes the script was basically changed on everybody. The movie we got was very different from the movie everyone signed on for.

Saw it. Really enjoyed it. Agree that the ending was fan service-y, which was actually the worst bit of the movie
Definitely a movie which stands up on its own merits.

Right about the time the Cubs won the World Series.
There's even an old Native American prophecy about it. "When the small bears in the windy place take the pennant in the fall, you'll know the end is near!"

When is it available for streaming rental? We’re not going to any theaters any time soon.

I suppose that proves that either the submarines are all in dock or that Boris' letters just say "keep quiet and hope no-one notices".

Finally had opportunity to see Ghostbusters: Afterlife. It was really good. Less slow burn than I was expecting from the trailers. Heavy on the nostalgia at the end, but in a way I thought was really well done. Generally just handled quite well.

Heavy nostalgia/fan service is a common comment it seems.
Now you may recall from other threads that I don’t see a lot wrong with fan service or nostalgia as things. But here, it feels like they earned it somewhat. The kids give their best Oxford Try, but just aren’t knowledgeable enough to carry the day, and that’s when our heroes, who lets face it probably figured out “man, those kids have cajones but are gonna need help!”, and do so. Their intervention makes sense, and they still work with the film’s own heroes, rather than just swooping in.

I would say they intended to solve it themselves, but proved unable. It’s only then that the power of friendship, or rather people you just met, is able to save the day. But yeah, they seed the arrival, it’s not completely out of the blue, and it’s generally done pretty well and in character so I enjoyed it.

I don't think the original Ghost Busters showing up is at all the problem. I think the shot of the little marshmellow men cheering is where it crosses the line.

Now available for home media streaming, I’m having a second watch.
As I’m now aware of the plot, I’m better able to settle in and just observe the details.
First and foremost? Props for excellent use of Buzzcock’s “Boredom”. A punk classic if ever there was one.
Secondly, they did an excellent job of matching the SFX for the ghosts to the original. With digital stuff being far more advanced, there would’ve been temptation to depart from the style of the originals, but it’s been comfortably resisted.
Likewise I’m glad that Muncher wasn’t a Slimer cameo. A stand in and similar design yes. But not simply a ‘member berry.
The kids are adorably dorky and awkward in each of their own ways. Between them we get the same broad archetypes as the four originals, without simply being Egon/Ray/Peter/Winston Jr. They fall somewhere between Ghostbusters and Goonies. I see no problem with that myself.
The new toys we see are ultimately limited, but make sense (pillion seat, RC Ghost Trap) and feel like something invented in the Ghostbuster’s heyday.
Back to the kids. Now sadly I can no longer count myself amongst the young, but I reckon they’re fun and relatable enough for young’uns. The film is comfortably PG without being twee.
Still not entirely sold on the Mum and Ant-Man. They’re largely walking talking plot devices, and just don’t work quite as well as Dana and Louis.
Plot wise the pacing feels a bit more even on my second watch. Yes it takes a bit to really get down to the busting, but what comes before is setup. From little things (Trevor fixing his Mum’s car at the side of the road, Phoebe being asked to pick the house’s lock) which tell us useful character traits, to establishing their wider place in the Ghostbuster’s world.
Definitely give it a rent if you remain on the fence.
