Yeah, I don't know how the land raiders on space ships thing started, or why it started, but fighting in the void and fighting with vehicles on top of space ships are not necessarily the same thing.

Did they land vehicles on the Necron World Engines surface for those who know that part of the lore better, or was it pure boarding actions? That could be one of the incidents vehicles were driving across a space ship (one of the very few I'd imagine).

I also wouldn't be surprised if it has happened and is a very niche, totally non codex astartes manoeuvre that the more free thinking marine commanders have employed once or twice.

The World Engine has a breathable atmosphere, and the Marines' entire vehicle pool is destroyed during their landing, because Counter is terrible at writing.

I actually like Ben Counter's work a lot, but yes. The World Engine had breathable atmosphere, gravity, etc. It was basically a planet.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Ive not read every answer posted on this but simply put...

SPACE HULKS.

These ships are often damaged with large areas open to the vacuum of space and Space Marines do have to fight in the void as a result.

Its also logical that they would have to fight in breached sections of ships they are boarding or defending, and, Imperial ships are so large, they could well be fighting on the surface of the ships and inded the safe goes for fortresses.

You do have Guilliman fighting in the void of space without a helmet on. A bit OP in my opinion with a weak explanation of void shields keep an atmosphere inside (nah)
