The Platoon is alright. The squad is acceptable. The command squad is decent.

Everything? Gor Blimey.

It's completely insane pricing. If the prices convert as normal, the Platoon is $220(the same as the full on Combat Patrol Starter Set with terrain), the Squad is $69, the Command Squad is "reasonable" at $55.50("reasonable" because that's the same price as the Marneus Calgar single figure), each Heavy Weapon is $39, and the individual models are more than the Codex Supplements for Marines.

oooshhh. To be fair I was expecting $70 for the squads, I do remember the Steel Legion MTO and watch the Old World ones. I honestly expected GW to go even higher this time. The single models are just ridiculous though. But again it really is expected from them nowadays. Charge $10 for the model, $10 for the MTO, and the rest for the FOMO charge.

In the other direction I'm a bit surprised regarding the relatively humane cost of the platoon (175 €)?
In modern Cadians that would be 2x Infantry Squad (84 €) + Command Squad (37 €) + Heavy Weapons Team (42 €) = 163 € so almost the same. I would have expected the Vostroyan set to be MUCH more expensive. I don't collect Vostroyans, but I have to say... it's tempting.

Fingers crossed that one of these days they bring back Muukali Riders and other Tallarns for a while...

Edit: And I second the others: while the Grognards are good, these Vostroyan Gentlemen look really stunning.

I am at crossroads: a whole another platoon or 4 heavy weapons teams and a set of snipers.

The latter just feels like I’d be throwing away money. The only enticing factor are:
I want at least 1 of each original sculpts.
I want to be able to field a squad of heavy weapon teams.

But unlike extra weapon teams I can at least pawn off a second platoon in 5 years if I don’t get to painting it.

Platoon and Squad are priced just fine. Comparable to modern Cadians, as someone said, its fine.

Not sure how they even arrive at 22£ for the special weapons.

I'll probably get a squad and maybe painstakingly bite my nails on an over priced plasma gun. I'll see, I already kinda figured it would end up being about 100 for a squad... Really regretting not buying one years and years ago at my FLGS when they were on the shelf. But that was before I had at least one squad of all the metal Guard minus these guys, Praetorians and Tallarns.

Yeah the singles have been wonky for a while. Even before they had the "last chance" on the Steel Legion the lone Plasma gun and Ork head sergeant were something like $12-$15 when a whole ten man squad including heavy weapon was $35.

$43 for a Guardsman pretty much has me literally laughing out loud. Thankfully I was already planning on passing on them, but the pricing seems out to lunch.

Everyone thought they were overpriced when they were $8 a piece in blisters when they first came out too.

Barely. Maybe I'll order one (I have quite a lot of them, but maybe I need some more for HH Militia) but not happily.

Not that much.

Not at all. Don't know about UK prices, but last time it was 25€ for it including an additional guy with grenade launcher. Now it's 43,50€ without him.

Hah hah! I don't know how the prices shook out in the rest of the world, but in the USA the officer with chainsword and the flamer guy cost more than the entire squad that contains both of them plus 8 guardsmen. I guess they'd really rather people buy in bulk.

Yup, £1.50 more for those two models compared to the squad they’re in.

Please note that in my summation I’m not saying any of the prices are good.

The Platoon is a decent number of models and units.

The Squad is pricey, but I guess ok if you want say, some Veterans as a stand out on the board unit.

Command Squad is about collector’s price for me. Something I’d want to pay just to have and paint them. Not a price I’d like to pay across an army.

Everything else can get in the bin price wise. Except, maybe the Snipers. But only because they appear to compare favourably in the face of pricing insanity.

Just looked more closely at the Platoon. You get different Sarge and Special Weapons to the squad.

Now, that doesn’t change its overall value, but does add some additional appeal. Platoon and a Squad gets you some nice variety to drop into a larger army.

My theory is that they know these models will mainly appeal to old beardy collectors, so they are priced this way so that GW still gets their pound of flesh even if you just need that one chainsword guy for your collection and are passing on the rest.

Could be the way the moulds are laid out. For instance, if there’s a mould per special weapon, sarge and heavy weapon? You need to be careful how many you produce.

Yes, I know this is MTO. But they still knock some up in advance, then back fill to order.

Now I'm curious about different pricing in different regions. Here (Germany) the Vostroyan Command Squad is 43,50 €, the Standard Cadian Command Squad 37 €. So basically the same ballpark (+17% to be exact). The Cadians have one more dude, but from the looks of it the Vostroyans have more details, especially the standard bearer and Commander.

The same for the Squad: German prices are 55€ for the Vostroyans and 42 for the Cadians (+30%). The Vostroyans have less options but are again (in my opinion at least) a lot more detailed.

Overall the costs don't seem to be that much out of place compared with the price hikes AM suffered anyway in the last years doesn't it?

Yeah I bought the platoon which is a nice little addition for my army and I don't have any HWTs yet.

As much as I love the heavy bolters I'm not paying £75 for 3.

The sergeant with the bolt pistol is chainsword is one of my favourites from the whole range but again I can't honestly pay that price for one.

Could round out your Platoon with a third infantry squad? That way you’ll have one of each Sarge, and one of each Special Weapon.

Budget allowing of course.

Given these are in metal, any extra casts can just go back in the smelting pot. Wear and tear on the mould might be an issue, but there shouldn't be much material wastage.

Considering a platoon, don't need 'em, won't do 'em justice but they are nice.

Do not understand why the command squad only comes with 4 men, that's just rude. I've an extra vos flamer or two somewhere... so that's an argument to getting them.

I was tempted, but not gonna. Payday is next Friday, but I’ve a credit card to pay off and my next holiday in Japan to pay for.

So, whilst that doesn’t mean No Hobby Spending At All? I am for once having to be disciplined about what I buy, and that doesn’t include comparatively frivolous.

Well, I ordered a platoon to be made. I already have a good amount of Vostroyans (and every model), so this is just an 'add some more' move and now im saturated.

For new players, starters and enthusiasts this MtO is horrible, of course.

Well, I wasn’t satisfied with the single Vostroyan trooper I own (from the days when you could mail order individual models) so I ordered the platoon, a couple heavy weapon teams, and the officer with the chainsword. I’ll probably round out the platoon with some tanks if I see any I like at my LGS. Not a full Vostroyan army, but a cool expansion for my Necromundan Spiders army.

I don't find the price that outrageous honestly.

Going with current price on GW Canada, 3 Cadian squads, a command squad and a heavy weapon team goes for 313$.

The Vostroyan platoon plus an extra squad goes for 348$ for basically the same amount of minis. A quite small markeup for vintage metal guards honestly. I'd pay that if I was into them for sure. Plus that combo gives you one of each sergent and special weapon in the squads so you don't need to get those expensive singles, unless you really want all the same ones in each squads.

And the Vostroyan squad is the same price as any kill team for the guards (83$), so really not anything special at that point.

I don't remember the price for the last Steel Legion batch, but I have a feeling they were more expensive because I really wanted them but ended up skipping it entirely.

I sure hope that if they ever do the older Night Lord metal models, as a made-to-order, the pricing won't be as bad. But I say that knowing full well that they'll somehow find a way to make them cost more than buying the used ones for $70 a pop.
