Comparing a wargame with golf or photography is not a valid comparison. It should be compared with other wargames.

I see what you are saying but I can't agree. $$$ per hour, even 40k is cheap compared to almost any hobby, I don't think it is unrealistic to compare hobby to hobby. I dive and spend more per year on diving than I do on 40k and I commit at LEAST 25-30 times the amount of time per year to 40k as I do to diving. I figure that for painting/playing only I put out about $2 hour for 40k. (about 2 years of playing, $2k in, 10 hours a week average) Where for diving, I put out about $2k a year, and get 20-25 dives in for that (one liveaboard dive trip a year) Of course that covers my flight and the room on the boat and food and all that, but essentially I am there only to dive and seeing as a dive is 45min - 1hr (and I get better bottom time than most because of practiced breathing)

All that said, I still have issues with paying the amount of money that I do for a piece of plastic :p Especially because I could have 100,000 devilfish made for me for $2k in China... man, that is a lot of devilfish...

Drano doesn't exactly scream "toy" to me.

i think saying that gw games are the most expensive is a little unfair, i'm not saying the cheapest, but you've got to consider that most other wargames tend to work better with smaller armies, whilst 40k at least tends to be most enjoyable at 1500-3k [at least i've always enjoyed those games most] i think that if you were to buy a similar number of models for another system, the costs would be a lot closer [admitedly, the other system would have a lot more metal in it] so i don't think that comparing system to system is really fair either, unless you have something that is really similar as far as the size of the army goes.
i think, happypants, the more important consideration, is just what would you do with that many devilfish? [open a non-edible sushi bar? see what i did there? christ i'm funny]... i suppose you could build an extension using the boxes

If you decide to compare any hobby with any other hobby you have to compare all hobbies with Tall Ship racing, which is so expensive that no-one except national governments can indulge in it. On that scale, 40K is still more expensive than De Bellis Antiquitatis or picking your nose.

My medium format camera equipment cost about £1,600 (it's cheap at that) and each film I shoot costs about £12 for 16 shots, developed and proof printed. I used to shoot a roll a week, which was less than I spent on my lunchtime sandwiches.

40K is an expensive wargame. It's designed to work with bigger numbers of figures that cost the user more. Anyone who doubts that should look up a few websites, get the costs for other rules sets and ranges of figures, and do a comparison.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Fair enough, you win :p

I still think that hour per hour it is pretty cheap, even if it is the most expensive of wargames.

Well, compared to a lot of things it is cheap. But does it offer value for money versus alternative wargames?

Well... that IS subjective isn't it. :p

It like crack man, cheap per hit, but when you add it up it costs a fortune. All depends how you want to look at it I guess. I think the next game I am going to invest in is going to be warrior which is super cheap so no comparison really.

"XBox360 is 299 at Walmart for the core system. 4 games around 50 dollars is 200. Harddrive 99. Wireless controller 40. Headset 20. Gold subscription to Live 46. Total cost: 704."

Sry DarkAngel... I just had to point this out: I know the word "newb" is frowned upon on forums.. but seriously... only a newb would buy the xbox 360 core system. look at your list. You have the core system for 300 dollars, the hardrive for 100 dollars, wireless controller for 40 dollars, the headset for 20 dollars, gold subscription 46 dollars. this costs about 500 dollars in total. this is idiotic. if you buy the actual 400 dollar xbox it comes with the xbox 360, the harddrive, a wireless controller, a headset, a gold subscription plus other goodies like HD compatability. only 400 dollars, plus 30 if you want to have the wired controller you would have ended up with. so make that 600 dollars for full xbox360 experience (as long as you have a TV) unless you are a gaming newb and dont know anything at all about how microsoft likes to steal money from you.

Amongst the Stars, In the Night

That's also only if you get the latest & greatest titles. Older games always cost less, as do older console systems, which are still available new in the box and easily obtainable at anytime via a wide variety of retail stores. On the other hand, older GW figs have only gone up in price and often have less in the blister/box than when originally released. To get a "bargain" on GW, one has to put in a considerable amount of work sifting through eBay, Bartertown and other such secondary market sites, while all I have to do is drive to Best Buy (or similar) and look through their bargain bin or go to GameStop (or similar) and get second hand titles.

Regardless, such comparisons are apples to oranges. Both are "fruit" (entertainment/leisure purchases), but that's where the similarities end. As already pointed out previously, as a tabletop wargame, GW's three core games are very, very expensive to get into and stay into. Doubly so if you haven't played any other tabletop wargames or been an avid scale modeller and aren't being supported by your parents.

GW's planned obsolecence (which it even advertises) only exacerbates this cost. This is one of the big draws to historicals for me. Nobody is going to say M4A2 Sherman tanks weren't armed with the M3 75mm gun or that Vikings didn't go to sea in long boats. Few things in the hobby are more annoying than to have an army you've spent months, years even, slowly collecting, building, and painting only to have it declared "obsolete" or "illegal" (or whatever else you want to call it) for majority play. LatD player? Sorry sucka, but they're now illegal! You'll need to play them as Gaurd. 13th Company? Well, you can just use the exisitng SM rules! Storm of Chaos? Only been out two years... now out of print and therefore illegal. Hope you enjoyed your Cult of Slaanesh list while it lasted! Thanks for the sales, don't let the door hit you where the good lord split you now!

There is very little wonder GW's sales volume has plummeted through the floor...
