So, my first (of many) Astral Claws squad, beginning an army which I'd been meaning to start for ages. (Notes)

I've added this to my blog in the other subforum, but the scope and unified feel of this project means that I'm thinking I'll keep a separate log here, for completed work.

A little busy to the eye, but very nice. And i dig all the osl.

Life is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless and perfunctory gift nobody ever asked for. Unreturnable because all you get back is another box of chocolates. So you're stuck with this undefinable whipped mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down because there's nothing left to drink. Sure once in a while there's a peanut butter cup or a English toffee, but they're gone too fast and the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits of hardened jelly and teeth shattering nuts. If you're desperate enough to eat those all you've got left is a. An empty box, filled with useless brown paper wrappers.

spincer, yeah, I'm still working out the kinks- since Astral Claws have the BT thing going on where they don't have standardized markings, it gives a lot of freedom but also is easy to go overboard. I think I'll eventually work towards having one combination of colors as typical, with fewer variations. I think mostly grew with left or both shoulders blue.

Paradigm, thanks, loved that old captain sculpt, I was glad when I finally found a use for him. Thinking he'll probably get promoted to a veteran squad eventually.

My version of Corien Sumatris (the Astral Claws special character captain), with a link to more notes, and analysis of the character's rules and use.

Looking good. I'd like to see a closeup of the Tyrant's Claw emblem, if it is freehand?

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

Thanks, all

Fifty, no, that's from the decal set- I've done a few freehand bits, but the astral claw logos are so detail-intensive that they're a real pain to do in bulk so I tend to only save that work for nice pieces (and I've learned a ton about applying decals well, since I wanted them done right: poor decals would be wreck a nice paint job). However, some freehand I did work on (with notes):

Nice work on the vets and banner! Is that NMM on them, or TMM?

Paradigm, NMM- while I'm interested in TMM, I've done very little of it since the vast majority of my personal collection is NMM so it feels incongruous to mix styles (I guess I could when breaking in to a new game).

Nice to see older metal models get some love (and you sneaked in the Skulls Standard Bearer too)

Yeah, my only real regrets from quitting 40k for several years to pay the bills are not keeping my bits bins (sold for very little compared to complete models, had a huge collection) and not keeping my skullz adeptus mechanicus set. (Though, in all honesty, the set as a whole isn't that great: there are like 3 models in it that I really liked.)

Oh, don't worry, it's happening. Non-canon paintjobs, but, once I get enough of their (varying degrees of) loyalist marines down, I'm definitely going to be sure to add in some chaos. They're also getting some allies and probably some convert space wolves...

Great work with the contrasting colors and brightness of them. Yes, may be busy for the eye, but compared to a lot of drab marines out there, this is refreshing.

Esp love the work on the captain!

Would be cool to see an entire 2000 point army painted like that.

Thanks, everyone!

On 2k points, I'm planning a lot more than that... I'm hoping to eventually do a good portion of the related secessionists (I've lined up Lamenters, Badab PDF (since Tyrant's Legion rules are kind of trash), and am in the process of refurbishing a couple super-heavies

Some more Marines, this time, of a rather older variety. (Notes on the Tiger Claws)

I like what you did with them. I also like the write up.

Me personally I really liked the old Astral Claws being orange and striped, over the boring Silver and blue. your AC's look amazing but I'm still partial to the old stuff.
I'm even thinking of taking the DV chosen and painting them old Astral Claws and add them to my Red Corsairs... everyone will call them Tiger Claws ... oh well.

How do you do your bases?

Yeah, I kind of wish they'd gone with something a little closer to the original colors for continuity's sake (seems like they could have done brown, red, or bronze with a nice update instead of such a thorough overhaul (heck, even the current tiger claws are at least closer in sensibility)...

OTOH, ah, yeah, not the biggest fan of most color schemes from that era- they were just too garish for my taste.

Cool on the retro chosen, I like it. I'm definitely thinking that when I get to chaos, it'll be a mix of astral claws and chaos, closer to the 3.5 codex chaos, where it's more of a transition to chaos and defacing, with some large unifyingred areas, rather than completely repainting so they're all homogenous. Something where there's a little more of the piratical bands instead of the fully unified colors.

edit: Oh, and the bases are just construction sand (with occasional bits of insulation foam for volume) primed white and washed with a blend of brown, green, yellow, and maybe some other stuff... I play the mix by ear b/c I never remember which browns or greens I've mixed in.
