How have Eldar and Necrons changed from 6th to 7th?
Both have gotten better. However, Necrons present enough of a problem matchup for Eldar to take this game.
Both have gotten better, and both generals fight to a draw.
While Necrons have gotten better, Eldar has gotten the bigger boon thanks to ObSec Wave Serpents. Eldar takes it.

2000 AV13-spam Necrons vs Mortetvie's Eldar

Adam (aka Mortetvie here on dakka) is a very good Eldar player and veteran. In a ways, this game is a rematch between 2 GT winners. We actually both won the Golden Throne GT. I took it 2 years ago (the tournament's very 1st year) and Mortetvie took it last year (the tournament's 2nd and last year), though I couldn't make it there that year. So this was a game that could have been had the GTGT took place this year.

We both took double-CAD lists because the now defunct GTGT would have been a double-CAD tournament. This is also actually the 2nd game between Adam and me on this trip. The first game was actually a 6E rematch, which Adam wrote the battle report for:

Mortetvie vs. JY2 unofficial last game of 6th 2k

BTW, Adam has his own blog. You can read about his gaming philosophies and experiences (with Eldar and others) at:

Mission: Bay Area Open

Primary - The Scouring, 4-pts

Secondary - Modified Maelstrom, 3-pts

We played a modified Maelstrom mission. Instead of drawing objectives for both players at the beginning of the Game Turn and then scoring them at the end of the game turn, we played it as draw an objective at the beginning of each Player Turn and then score it at the end of each Player Turn.

Bonuses - First Blood, Linebreaker, Slay the Warlord, 1-pt each

Deployment: Hammer & Anvil

Initiative: Necrons

PRE-GAME THOUGHTS:

Necrons: (by Jy2)

This will probably be my toughest fight on my road trip. Of all the generals that I have played against on my trip, Adam is definitely the most experienced in terms of competitive play and probably the most tactical player as well. He's running dual wraithknights, one of the units in the Eldar codex that is probably most effective in dispatching my AV13 vehicles. He's got some of the most durable and fastest ObSec troops in the game - 3 wave serpents, a huge, super-resilient deathstar wraithblob, 2 weaker troops that is mostly protected within the serpents and 2 super-fast bike units. His farseer has got one of the best psychic powers in the game - Invisibility. However, Adam's main advantage is that he is going 2nd.

However, Eldar is not without its challenges as well. Wave serpents under-perform against AV13 vehicles. I will be getting 4+ jink saves against wraithknight shooting. Teslas work very well against Eldar transports and I have a ton of them. His deathstar is super-slow. His shooting is inefficient against flyers and I have Mindshackle Scarabs to counter his WK's if I do get into combat with them. If I can take out his WK's, there won't be much in his army that can stop mine.

Overall, I think I have the edge in terms of the matchup. I'll probably lose a lot of my vehicles, but my prediction (which is also my strategy) is that I will decimate his troops to the point that he will not have enough units to stop me from claiming objectives on Turn 5.

Eldar: (by Mortetvie)

I will win because I weighted Jim's dice and the bottom of my table is magnetic so Jim had no chance survive, all his bases are belong to me!

But seriously, I was intimidated by the amount of AV13 and S7 shooting coming my way and I knew it was going to be a tough game! Jim is definitely a very strong and solid general so I relish every opportunity to test my skill.

Securing the second turn was huge for me so I could have the last say on objectives. After that, I wanted to eliminate or greatly mitigate Jim's ability to get in a good Alpha strike so I deployed out of his max range and prepared to try and put a dent in his wall of barges. I also had to make sure my serpents were protected because they are essentially my only anti-air in this game!.

My general tactics after that were to engage and deal with Barge lords/Annihilation Barges with my Wraithstar/Wraithknights while my Serpents hopefully take out his fliers/troops while Hanging back with 2+ cover thank's to the Shrouding power.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

DEPLOYMENT:

Spoiler:
For psychic powers, the Eldar get: Invisibility and Shrouding among others.

For Warlord traits, we get:

Eldar: +1" Charge/run

Necrons: +1 VP if I take any of the Secure & Hold Objectives. (I later found out after the game that in the BAO rules, you cannot roll on the Tactical Warlord Traits.)

Necron deployment. I deploy the annihilation barges as far forwards as I can.

Pardon the proxies, but I am not seriously thinking about running this army. I am just testing it out. The land speeders here are the bargelords (Overlords on command barges).

Adam's deployment. He deploys his forces as far back from my forces as he can (over 36") in order to deny as much of my shooting as possible. His forces are also back far enough so that when my flyers come in, they will be out of range as well.

An overview of our deployment.

Adam declines to seize.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Necron 1

Spoiler:
Tactical Objectives: Objective #1 & Destroy an Enemy Unit

Necron skimmers advance 12".

Bargelords turbo-boost.

Annihilation barges (AB's) then go flat-out as well.

My Warlord goes to claim Objective #1. I get +1 Maelstrom VP due to my Warlord trait.

Maelstrom - Eldar: 0, Necrons: 2

Shooting does nothing.

Eldar 1

Spoiler:
Tactical Objectives: Objective #1 & Destroy an Enemy Unit

Overview of Adam's turn.

Eldar movement. WK's (wraithknights) stay back.

Adam casts Invisibility on the wraithstar. They then run.

Bam! Despite jinking for 4+ cover, the WK's take out the Quantum Shields of both of my AB's. The wave serpents then finish them off with their shooting. The Eldar takes First Blood. They also fulfill 1 of the Maelstrom objectives (destroy an enemy unit).

Maelstrom - Eldar: 1, Necrons: 2

Last wave serpent does a glancing hit on another AB.

Necron 2

Spoiler:
Tactical Objectives: Objective #2 & Destroy an Enemy Unit

3 of my flyers come in.

In a moment of rashness, I decide to go after his wraithstar with my 2 bargelords. At the time, I did not know that they had 4++ Invuln saves, at least not until after I assaulted.

AB's move forwards.

Warlord go to take Objective #2.

Maelstrom - Eldar: 1, Necrons: 4

I focus my ENTIRE army onto his Invisible wraithstar. That is 3 flyers and 4 AB's. I only manage a total of 1 dead wraithblade and 2W on Baharroth! WTF!?!

The 2 bargelords then make their assaults.

I kill a grand total of 2 wraithblades, not through my attacks but rather, from Mindshackle Scarabs. At least my bargelords are unharmed.

My opponent then attempts to Hit-&-Run out of combat but fails!

Wow....what fail on the part of my necrons! The shooting of my entire army and then assault by my 2 bargelords only manage to kill a total of 3 wraithblades and no characters!?! Honestly, I was expecting to cripple the deathstar, maybe killing 7-8 models. Alas, next turn could be bad for me, especially if Adam can continue to roll like he did last turn.

Eldar 2

Spoiler:
Tactical Objectives: Objective #3 & Destroy an Enemy Unit

Eldar movement. WK's begin their advance.

Shooting by a wave serpent blows up 1 nightscythe. The Eldar gets 1 of their Maelstrom objectives.

Maelstrom - Eldar: 2, Necrons: 4

WK immobilizes an AB.

WK and wave serpent(s) then finish off another AB. 3 down. 3 more to go.

In combat, the wraithstar takes off 1HP from the barge and 2W from my Overlord. In turn, I only manage to kill 1 wraithblade. Invisbility is such a pain.

By the ways, one of the wraithknights hops onto Objective #3 for his other Maelstrom objective.

Maelstrom - Eldar: 3, Necrons: 4

Necron 3

Spoiler:
Tactical Objectives: Objective #1 & #2

Warriors walk on from Ongoing Reserves. They then run.

Flyers do what they normally do. They go after the jetbike troops.

Barges move.

My Warlord goes to grab Objective #2.

Maelstrom - Eldar: 3, Necrons: 6

Warriors disembark to grab Objective #1.

Maelstrom - Eldar: 3, Necrons: 7

It takes the shooting of both nightscythes just to wipe out 1 unit of jetbikes with warlock (I believe they had a 2+ jink save due to Conceal).

The rest of my shooting goes poorly, due largely to Shrouding from the farseer giving the wave serpents 2+ cover. And to top it off, my opponent didn't even need to jink with them as he positioned them mainly behind ruins for cover.

Again, combat goes poorly for my bargelords. I lose 1 bargelord and only manage to kill another 1 wraithblade.

Fortunately for me, my downed bargelord gets right back up.

The wraithstar then successfully Hit-&-Runs out of combat.

Eldar 3

Spoiler:
Tactical Objectives: Objective #3 & Destroy an Enemy Unit

Wraithblades go after the AB's.

Crap! This is probably the main mistake on my part that wasn't due to my ignorance of my opponent's special rules. I forgot to take into account the extra Movement gained from Hit-&-Run!

BTW, Adam uses a psychic power (or perhaps it is a wargear) to regenerate 1W back for Baharroth.

His army goes after my 2 bargelords.

The other WK goes after my immobilized skimmer.

Shooting then gives my opponent one of his Maelstrom objectives.

Maelstrom - Eldar: 4, Necrons: 7

Shooting followed by assault.

I'm not sure how, but both of my bargelords survive!

Another multi-assault.

The Eldar takes down 1 AB and takes off 2HP's from the other one.

Again, his WK claims Objective #3.

Maelstrom - Eldar: 5, Necrons: 7

Necron 4

Spoiler:
Tactical Objectives: Objective #1 & #3

I go after the jetbikes.

Warlord goes to grab Objective #3 and warriors Objective #1.

Maelstrom - Eldar: 5, Necrons: 10

Lol....so far, my Warlord hasn't done anything but grab 8-pts of Maelstrom objectives!

Shooting by my flyer and AB only kill 1 jetbike no thanks to 2+ Shrouded cover.

But in a stroke of good fortune for my crons, the bikes with Warlock would then fail Morale and run off the table!

In combat, my bargelord loses to some lowly dire avengers!!!

The wraithknight then pounds the other bargelord into the ground.

This time, neither of them gets back up.

Eldar 4

Spoiler:
Tactical Objectives: Objective #3 & Destroy an Enemy Unit

Wraithblades prepare to take out my last AB.

Eldar movement. WK's finally advance.

BTW, Baharroth goes into reserves.

Eldar destroy the AB through shooting.

Maelstrom - Eldar: 6, Necrons: 10

They also wipe out my warriors in the open.

This time, it is the wave serpent who is claiming Objective #3.

Maelstrom - Eldar: 7, Necrons: 10

Necron 5

Spoiler:
Tactical Objectives: Destroy 2 Enemy Units

Bah! I really don't have much left. I don't even have the ability to destroy an enemy unit this turn. Warlord goes to grab the 2-pt Scouring objective in case if the game ends.

Warriors grab the 3-pt Scouring objective. Flyers try to block off the WK's from advancing.

Shooting kills 1 guy?

Eldar 5

Spoiler:
Tactical Objectives: Objective #3 & Destroy an Enemy Unit

Adam goes to grab 2 objectives here.

Actually, he goes to grab all of the objectives that I don't have.

I under-estimate the range of the WK's. They might actually make it into assault with my Warlord!

Baharroth deepstrikes in and tries to take my 3-pt objective away from me. However, he fails to finish off my warriors, thus conceding the 3-pt objective to me.

WK's don't even need to assault as they shoot down my Warlord, who doesn't get back up.

Eldar achieves both of their Maelstrom objectives.

Maelstrom - Eldar: 9, Necrons: 10

-------------------------------------------------------------------

With that, the game ends. Eldar easily wins the Primary - the Scouring. I barely manage to take the Secondary 10-9. However, because I cannot take a Tactical Trait as my Warlord Trait, I will concede the Secondary to my opponent as well. My opponent also gets all 3 bonus points. I get none. Eldar takes it 10-0.

Total Domination by the Craftworld Mortetvie Eldar!!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------

POST-GAME THOUGHTS:

Spoiler:
Necrons: (by Jy2)

Wow...so how did I lose so badly with an army build that should have won in this battle?

1. Going 1st. I really needed to go 2nd instead. My army was built to withstand opposing alpha-strikes. It would have been more advantageous for me to go 2nd in this game.

2. Hammer & Anvil deployment. The deployment gave my opponent some breathing room. It also messed up my alpha-strike by allowing him to avoid it completely.

3. Psychic powers. While Invisibility was good, I think the key power was actually Shrouding. Otherwise, I probably should have killed off all of his wave serpents. Wave serpents with 2+ cover on the other hand, no.

4. The dice. Adam rolled above average, especially on the vehicle damage charts. I rolled below, especially with my jink saves against WK shooting (I believed I only made 1 or 2 4+ cover saves the entire game). This led to him quickly killing all of my annihilation barges as well as to 1-shot my Warlord.

5. Assaulting/shooting the wraithstar on Turn 2. This was actually more due to my unfamiliarity with the wraithblades than any actual tactical mistake on my part. I thought that I would have been able to cripple them with a combination of shooting and assault, thinking that they would have no saves in close combat. However, what I didn't know was that they had 4++ invuln's as well. Had I known that, my strategy in this case would have been much, much different. I would most likely have just ignored them, which was supposed to be my initial strategy.

6. I didn't factor in Hit-&-Run. Now this was an actual tactical mistake on my part. I should have kept my barges back in case if his wraithstar successfully hit-&-ran out of combat. Call it a brainfart on my part.

Overall, besides my mistakes, my opponent also played really well. He denied me my alpha strike. He kept his units protected by Shrouding and he baited me with his wraithstar. He never lost sight of the mission objectives, and he played with more focus than me in this game. It was a very well deserved victory by Eldar in this matchup, and I look forwards to perhaps playing him again at the BAO.

Eldar: (by Mortetvie)

I think the things that made the eldar victory more likely than not to occur this game were the following:

1.) Going second
2.) Hammer & Anvil deployment
3.) Good psychic powers
4.) Good secondary objectives
5.) Better than average dice rolls
6.) Slightly below average rolling on opponent's part

Going second on Hammer & Anvil against an army that has 24" max range on thier weapons is huge-it also gave me enough room to ensure my Serpents were out of range of the flyers. Therefore, the available targets for Jim were probably not ideal for his army and the range issue gave me an opportunity to "power up" with psychic powers. So ultimately, I got all of the perks of going second along with the perks of going first because I was the one who was ultimately able to get the "alpha strike."

Had the deployment been different, I would have likely been taking 7x4 twin-linked S7 shots which would have done some damage and given Jim first blood (unless dice were favorable to me and I deployed so only some of his barges were in range).

Furthermore, with a Farseer/2x spiritseers, invisibility is not guaranteed though it is likely (is it 87%? Not sure). Invisibility and shrouding make my list pretty beefy against an army that can't ignore 2+ cover. The fact that I was able to get these power and successfully cast them was important.

Finally, having the right tools is essential for any army and I think my army had the necessary units to deal with Jim's army. Specifically, double WK and a unit of wraithblades w/ hit & run allow me to have something to deal with his barge lords and other vehicles while my serpents can deal with his air.

So had the deployment been different, my powers not as good, and Jim not getting too close too-fast and charging my wraithblades-the game would/could have been a very different one! Jim has great target priority when he plays and he has a great focus so this game was a good challenge for both of us.

Thanks once again for the game, Jim!

Now regarding my army in general, I like it and I think it played well, I just need to fine tune it a bit more. This is actually a list I hope to bring to the BAO (with some changes to reduce points of course).

For BAO, I plan on taking the following:

Farseer on bike; 2x spiritseers; 8xwraithblades w/ wave serpent; 2x 5 dire avengers w/ wave serpent; 2x3 bikes; 2x wraithknights; Baron; 5x dark eldar warriors w/venom.

It has a lot of scoring and what I hope will end up being hitting/staying power .

Seriously WAAC Necron List!! I like it, though I do hope there are enough lists that compete against to make the meta pool interesting.

Yeah, this is my serious-about-winning-a-tournament list. No way you will see this in casual play....unless my opponent actually requests to play against it.

Then again, you probably will never see this type of list as almost none of the major tournaments are going to be running double-CAD tourneys.

Not really. Actually, the chances of me taking crons is low. I already took them to my last 2 major GT's. I'm more likely to take Tyranids, daemons or the grey knights before I take my crons again.

And it stands as one of the better arguments for not allowing Dual CAD. Would be 2 fewer Annihilation Barges going CAD+AD.

Anyway, looking forward to reading the batrep, you and Adam are skilled, sound, and tactical players. I'll make no predictions..... as I already know the outcome!

What about bringing an Eldar unbound army that would only have Wraithknights in it? That would be 8 WKs.

Coming back to reality... I think it's gonna be Necron victory. The only big threats are 2 WKs (which Necrons can handle more or less). Wave Serpents are terribad againsts all these AV13 and Wraithblades seem to be too slow to change the outcome of this game by a big margin. Although WSs aren't that bad against Night Scythes. Especially since they will probably be jinking a lot.
But we cannot forget that Mortetvie is a great general (nearly as good as Commander_Farsight ) and he might possibly pull a suprising victory.

While I am flattered, nobody is that good-farsight is in his own category-not that I've played him but I look forward to any opportunity to test my skill!

Silliness aside, while many aspects of my list have apparent weaknesses, I think the list also has a lot of synergy to counteract those weaknesses. I hope that this game can demonstrate that my list is decent and my competency as a general is not utter garbage and I hope I at least appear to give Jim a challenge!

I apologize for the delay, but I have been really busy as of late. Will try to get it out tonight or at latest, by tomorrow.
Well, we're looking forward to it, but no rush, man.

Btw, what was the next Necron match after this?

Jy2 that list is extremely similar to one i developed right after 7th came out.

Mine only had 2 bargelords but both had resorbs and i have haywiretecs in all my warrior squads.

Incorrect, I am the mallet that beats the drum and smashes opponents of the Greater Good.

But we cannot forget that Mortetvie is a great general (nearly as good as Commander_Farsight ) and he might possibly pull a suprising victory..

Why thank you. It would be safe to say that there is no one that compares to myself There is no "god-tier" that includes Daemons, its just me. Seriously though, it would be sweet to play a general that is (truthfully ) as skilled as yourself. We should plan a game. Now, the batrep. I would like to see and Eldar victory here. As stated above, yes there are a few gaps that aren't necessarily the norm, but I think that by playing to the Eldar mobility strength, and making it a more tactical game could win mortevile the game. Jims list packs a lot of punch tho... I am interested to see the batrep!

That Necron List is insane! I would have no idea where to start with putting together a list to even half counter that haha!

For Tau, I take a Hammerhead with the Rail Gun, Longstrike, and Submunition Rounds. With the new Chariot rules, this means that I am guaranteed and auto pen on the Barge, and blow it up on a 4+ (AP1 + Open Topped), if the player is as smart as someone like jy2, they will allocate it to the lord, at this point they have to take an unvuln save (provided they have on) there is a 1/3 chance they will fail, and upon doing so, the S10 will inflict instant death. So you have a weapon that hits on 2+, It blows up the barge on a 4+, and it kills the Lord 1/3 of the time. I would say 2-4 turns of shooting and both will be dropped by the Hammerhead. It also deletes a tank a turn, so pretty good IMO.

That will be revealed when Jy2 gets enough free time to post the pictures and commentary-he's been super duper busy! Btw, noody mind the mess that is my garage .

I look forward to seeing this epic struggle unfold before our very eyes-you know necrons and eldar are like the ultimate enemies! Eldar were utilized to great effect by the old ones until the necrons were retconned to not be such pushovers . I wouldn't be surprised if GW says the old ones are in some form of retirement community like leisure world or something... Well, lets see how this game reflects the fluff and epic struggle between necrons and eldar!

Working on report. Should finish it today!

Been busy with both work and "play".

Had a practice game with my new Hive Fleet Pandora against one of their worst matchups, Tau. Played against the new Orks. Lastly, you will see the return of one of my longtime opponent and friend....SabrX. Yes, I went up against his Sisters of Battle in an attempt to get him prepared for the BAO after over a year of absence from the game. Watch out for the return of the NEW Immo-spam Sisters and I must say, they are pretty damn good!

Regarding my turn 1 shooting, to be fair, each wraithknight got a single pen result and a wave serpent finished off the now AV 11 barges . Was lucky that my last serpent managed to glance the 3rd barge. The wall of av13 vehicles just kept coming!

Anyway, looking forward to that sister game-should be interesting against Tyranids lol...
