Do Sisters have a prayer of a chance against deathstar Daemons in the Relic?
If it were any other mission, then probably. But since it is the Relic, Sisters don't have a chance in hell.
Draw. No one is able to hold onto the Relic.
Yes, because MSU is better than deathstars in this Edition.

1850 SabrX's Sisters of Battle vs Jy2's Seekerstar Daemons

For those who don't know him, SabrX was one of my regular opponents who I used to play against a lot. However, he was gone for most of 6th Edition and hasn't even touched 7th yet. At least not until today. Well, now he's back and he is trying to get into tournament form for the Bay Area Open (BAO) in just 2 weeks without having even read the 7th Ed. rules! Now as his friend, I am going to help him get up to snuff with the 7E competitive scene by throwing some of my toughest armies against his. This is the 1st of 2 battles against his Sisters of Battle. This is also the debut of my new Daemons - the Seekerstar Daemons. Get ready for an entertaining and bloody battle coming up.

PRE-GAME THOUGHTS:

Daemons: (by Jy2)

There are 2 major reasons why this should be a Daemon win.

1. I am running a deathstar army in the Relic mission. Good luck trying to get my Invisible 2++ seekerstar to drop the Relic.

2. I am going 1st.

The basis for my list is Invisibility-spam. Be'lakor has it. Now I've got 5 more chances (2 Lvl 2 Heralds, Fateweaver) to try to get another one or even 2 Invisibilities. As soon as I get another one, I will roll on the Daemon powers for some summoning shenanigans. The 1st Invisibility will go on the seekerstar. The other one(s) can go on whomever I feel needs it most. Also, because of Forewarning combined with the Grimoire, my seekerstar will most likely be rocking 2++ as well. With that combo and 1st turn, you can forget about the Primary. I should get it easily. Where my opponent may have a slight advantage is on the Maelstrom Secondary, where usually MSU armies have the advantage. Then my opponent needs to beat me on the Tertiaries as well, because I can tell you that Primary for him is not happening.

One thing to note is that his formation, the Purge Squadron, is pretty damn good. Basically, all of his Retributors get Relentless for free. On top of that, they have some funky Apocalyptic shooting if 6 or more units from the formation combines their shooting. We found out after the game that this formation was Apoc only (and thus, not legal at the BAO) but if it was allowed, it would be a winner....unless, of course, you are playing Victory Points or Big Guns (that's 15 heavy supports!!!).

Sisters: (by SabrX)

Quick side note: At the time, I didn't know Purge Squadron was an apoc formation. It's not legal in BAO, so I won't be fielding it. Nevertheless, this was a good warm up for me who haven't played a single game of 7th and the more recent version of SoB.

7th edition has made mech armies more viable, especially now that transports are harder to kill and can be objective secured if bought with troops.

I didn't know what to expect going into this game. Daemons have always given me a difficult time and Jy2 promised he would bring a nasty list to play against. Against an unknown army, the best I can do is play towards the objectives and hope my MSU army can overwhelm him. There isn't much I can do against flyers. Thankfully they can't assault the turn they hover, so that gives me some options.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Deployment:

Spoiler:

Daemon deployment. I deploy very aggressively.

I leave 1 unit of nurglings on my Maelstrom objective and the other 3 in reserves to deepstrike in.

Sisters deployment.

Then the unthinkable happens.....SabrX seizes the Initiative!!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sisters 1

Spoiler:
Sisters Tactical Objectives: Scoring unit in Enemy Deployment Zone & 3 Scoring units in your Deployment Zone with no Enemy contesting.

Daemon Tactical Objectives: Scoring unit in Enemy Deployment Zone & 3 Scoring units in your Deployment Zone with no Enemy contesting.

Sisters move forwards 6" so that they can fire with the Apocalyptic formation.

Celestine (represented by the unpainted seraphim here) goes and hides under a rock.

Overview of Sister's movement.

SabrX then focuses his entire army, including a 10" Apocalyptic blast from the Purge squadron, onto my seekers. He kills 10!

While he didn't get First Blood, he did manage to cripple my deathstar when he stole my Initiative.

Daemons 1

Spoiler:

Daemons get ready to bring the pain.

Flyers fly. My goal this turn is to get First Blood.

I get Invisibility and the Grimoire off on my seekerstar. I also can Invisibility on my Tzeentch grinder.

However, instead of getting First Blood, I actually give my opponent First Blood as my Herald bites the dust while trying to cast Sacrifice. (She periled, rolled a 1 on the Perils chart and then failed her Morale.) She also takes 2 seekers with her back into the Warp.

Wow....not....going....very well for Daemons so far.

Tzeentch grinder fires and takes off 1HP each from 3 different vehicles. He also shakes 2 of those vehicles.

Slaanesh grinder takes off 1HP each from 2 tanks.

Seekers then make the charge....

....and wrecks one of the immolators.

At the end of the turn, we both have 3 of our scoring units in our deployment zones with no enemy units contesting.

Maelstrom VP's - Daemons: 1, Sisters: 1

Sisters 2

Spoiler:
Sisters Tactical Objectives: Destroy 2 Enemy Units.

Daemon Tactical Objectives: Objective #1 & Scoring unit in Enemy Deployment Zone.

Celestine and sisters prepare to assault.

The tanks back away from my Invisible grinder. Several of the girls then disembark with their relentless multi-meltas.

They manage to only glance it once.

Multi-meltas waste one of the Slaanesh grinders.

Maelstrom VP's - Daemons: 1, Sisters: 2

Shooting kills 2 Invisible seekers.

Celestine then attempts the charge but fails!

So the shooting of her entire army only manages to kill 1 unit. Hmmm....

Daemons 2

Spoiler:

Nurglings come in, deepstriking into Sister territory.

I prepare for multiple assaults this turn. By the ways, Be'lakor went into Hovering mode last turn.

I manage to get Invisibility and the Grimoire off on the seekerstar but fail Invisibility on Be'lakor!!!

Grinder fires at the rhino. He shakes 2 rhinos and kills 3 sisters.

Shooting by Fateweaver (in the psychic phase for Fatey) and the soulgrinder kill 1 immolator and 4 sisters.

Seekers (or shall I say, Herald) make the charge, though I lose both seekers to Overwatch.

Be'lakor and Tzeentch grinder make their charges as well.

Grinder wrecks the immo.

Herald actually kills Celestine! Fortunately for my opponent, his unit passes Morale.

In other news, Be'lakor smashes and fails to kill even 1 sister!

This turn, I get both Maelstrom objectives with Nurglings claiming Objective #1 and Nurglings in my opponent's deployment zone.

Maelstrom VP's - Daemons: 3, Sisters: 2

Fortunately, both of my HQ's - Be'lakor and Herald - are locked in combat so can't be shot up this turn.

Sisters 3

Spoiler:
Sisters Tactical Objectives: Destroy an Enemy Unit & 3 Scoring units in your Deployment Zone with no Enemy contesting.

Daemon Tactical Objectives: Objective #1 & 3 Scoring units in your Deployment Zone with no Enemy contesting.

Tanks back up some more. 1 more unit of sisters come out to play.

Celestine gets back up. Sisters make a beeline to my objective.

Shooting blows up the grinder, killing 4 sisters in 4 different units!

Maelstrom VP's - Daemons: 3, Sisters: 3

Exorcist fires and insta-kills 2 nurglings.

Celestine kills 1 nurgling base with her flamer. She then makes the charge....

....and trades 2W for 1W. Fortunately, I roll low for my Daemonic Instability test.

Herald kills 2....

....and Be'lakor kills 2. However, both units pass Morale. Darn.

Daemons 3

Spoiler:

Fatey goes into Hovering mode and jumps onto the Relic. I then cast Invisibility on him. Heh, heh....

Grinder wrecks another immo.

Both Be'lakor and my Herald finishes off their units. Wrong turn to do that buddies.

Haha, here we trade tit for tat. Combat is drawn as my nurglings pass 3 out of 4 Invuln's and deal 1W back to Celestine.

I can't help but smirk. Wouldn't it be just glorious if my nurglings took down Celestine? Oh, for shame....

I still hold Objective #1, my Maelstrom objective.

Maelstrom VP's - Daemons: 4, Sisters: 3

Currently, I am slightly ahead, both in the Primary and Secondary. However, my 2 psykers - Be'lakor and Herald - are sitting ducks next turn. If only I could have finished off his Sisters on Turn 2 instead....

Sisters 4

Spoiler:
Sisters Tactical Objectives: Objective #2 & 3 Scoring units in your Deployment Zone with no Enemy contesting.

Daemon Tactical Objectives: Objective #1 & Scoring unit in Enemy Deployment Zone.

Sh*t! This is going to hurt.

Sisters converge onto my guys. At least Be'lakor will be getting 2+ Shrouded cover if he jinks.

Celestine goes and hides back underneath a rock. HAHAHAHA.... (BTW, she hit-&-ran out of combat last turn to save face and to deny my nurglings the glory.)

Sisters go after my Maelstrom objective.

I do not survive Sister shooting. Both the Herald (Invisible) and Be'lakor (2+ cover) goes down.

Sisters blast at my nurglings in her deployment zone. They kill 1 and put 1W on another.

Finally, Sisters also manage to immobilize my last grinder.

They also claim Objective #2 (with an Exorcist) but I have nurglings in their deployment zone denying them of their other Maelstrom objective.

Maelstrom VP's - Daemons: 4, Sisters: 4

Daemons 4

Spoiler:

So I am in major trouble. With the Relic, Fatey cannot fly. I don't have the Grimoire nor do I have Invisibility. So what do I need to do? My only solution is to get him locked into combat. Fatey prepares to assault the girls. BTW, I already went into Hovering last turn. It was the only way I could grab the Relic.

Grinder finishes off a unit of sisters with his shooting. Too bad one of my objectives wasn't to destroy an enemy unit.

Fatey then assaults. Just for kicks, I decide to Smash because Fatey is probably the only MC in the game not to get nerfed by Smash attacks.

1 sister bites the dust but luckily for me, they hold.

I still claim Objective #1 with my nurglings and have nurglings in my opponent's deployment zone to claim both Maelstrom objectives.

Maelstrom VP's - Daemons: 6, Sisters: 4

However, I don't have much left on the table, only Fatey, an immobilized grinder and a handful of nurglings.

Sisters 5

Spoiler:
Sisters Tactical Objectives: Objective #1 & Scoring unit in Enemy Deployment Zone.

Daemon Tactical Objectives: Destroy an Enemy Unit & 3 Scoring units in your Deployment Zone with no Enemy contesting.

Sister movement.

Sisters disembark to contest my Objective #1.

They finally take down my grinder after 5 turns of shooting at it with a multi-melta to the rear.

They take out a nurgling here....

....and another nurgling there.

However, he is not able to finish off my nurglings in his deployment zone. I still have 2 units left, each with 1 nurgling swarm.

In assault, Fatey and sisters flail at each other. No, rather, they fail at each other.

Sisters get 1 Maelstrom point for having a unit in my deployment zone.

Maelstrom VP's - Daemons: 6, Sisters: 5

Daemons 5

Spoiler:

Despite being nearly tabled, I can still win it. I only have Fatey and a handful of nurglings left. However, I also have the Relic and am up 6-5 on the Secondary. I just need for the game to end this turn. (Prays to the Chaos gods, not that they would listen.)

I actually go to assault the sisters. I figured their shooting is much worse than their assault and that I'd be safer in assault.

However, in combat, I actually lose combat by 2. But my nurglings still stay around.

Fatey and Sisters continue to fail at each other (Sisters might have caused a wound to big Chicken).

I don't get any Maelstrom objectives this turn, but I am still up 6-5 on the Maelstrom objectives. I also have the Primary and Linebreaker (nurglings). SabrX only has First Blood (Herald who died to Perils) and Linebreaker (several units).

If the game ends now, it would actually be a Crushing Victory for my Daemons as I will take it 8-2.

I roll to see if the game continues and....

Sisters 6

Spoiler:
Sisters Tactical Objectives: Objective #2 & Destroy an Enemy Unit.

Daemon Tactical Objectives: Objective #2 & Scoring unit in Enemy Deployment Zone.

No!!! The game continues.

I can't grab Objective #2 with his Exorcist on it. And he is most definitely going to destroy my units.

However, if by some miracle, my nurglings can survive in his deployment zone (against the shooting of 3 exorcists)....and as long as Fatey doesn't die....then I can win the game. Otherwise, my opponent can pull out the Secondary and then beat me on the Tertiary objectives (Linebreaker and First Blood).

In combat, he assaults another unit of sisters into the fight with Fatey. Sisters actually win by 1 but Fatey survives.

In combat, I lose once again and take 1-2W from Daemonic Instability. I have 1 nurgling with 1W remaining.

But it all came down to his shooting.

He fires all 3 exorcists into my 2 nurglings. It all comes down to the very last shot and my very last save. Make it, I win. Fail it, I lose.

I roll a 2! Noooo! But wait....I have a re-roll from Fatey. So I re-roll the save and....

Noooooo!!!!!

Maelstrom VP's - Daemons: 6, Sisters: 7

We finish up my turn, which was inconsequential.

Game ends.

Fatey still holds the Relic, giving me the Primary (4-pts). However, by killing my last nurgling in his deployment zone, SabrX takes away my Linebreaker as well as steals the Secondary (3-pts) away from me 7-6. He also has First Blood (suicidal Herald) and Linebreaker (Coward Celestine and her PMS sisters ).

The Sisters take it in a very close and bloody battle 5-4.

Minor Victory to Purge Monster Squadron (PMS) Sisters!!!

Daemons 6

Spoiler:

This turn was of no consequence.

It's not possible to ally with yourself like that, though you could move one unit of Nurglings to the other detachment and thereby changing the allied detachment to a second Combined Arms Detachment.

Looking forward to this

Ditto. Also, you could ally in Bel'Akor with some cultists as a CSM choice. I'm looking forward to this game, I think I'm betting on those Daemons though!

This was a BAO practice game.

In the BAO, you could self-ally (but can't run dual-CAD's). Of course if it were any other game, I would have done what jifel suggested and swapped out 1 unit of nurglings for some cultists.

I voted Sisters just because, but frankly with Invisibility (and Bela'kor joining the party as well), this is going to be tough.

Yeah two invisibilities plus Grimoire? On Soul Grinders? No way.

At Jy2, you know the Loci's don't stack right? Seems a bit of a waste of points, could take a lesser on the herald for an extra +1 attack instead...

OK

Yikes 2 Invisibilities with 3 Soul Grinders! That's a nasty list! The biggest thing I like about it is that it is actually original and not a mono-build at all.

However, I have to ask, why nurglings?

I definitely vote daemons here.

For a number of reasons, a few of which Shandara already mentioned. I will go on with the reasons that he hasn't mentioned.

1-4. See Shandara's comments.

5. Cheap. 45-pts for 12 Wounds with potential 2+ cover. For the price of 1 normal troop choice, you can get 2 units of nurglings.

6. Easy to hide.

The main drawback is that they can get insta-killed, but you can mitigate that to an extent by spreading the objectives, keeping them (the nurglings) in reserves and then deepstriking them across the 4 winds. Make your opponent chase after them while you take board control with the seekers, grinders and Be'lakor.

I’m going with sisters since I always feel having more men (sisters in this case) on the field helps against deathstars. Also I always enjoy seeing Sisters win to spite GW seemingly not giving a damn about them.

Let's be honest, Apocalypse formations are probably one of the few things that even stand a chance of hurting a 2++ Daemon deathstar.

Looking forward to this. I'm rooting for the Sisters, obviously, but I know how mean Daemons can be in the hands of an experienced player like Jy2.

As much as I want the sisters to win, J2y too stronk.

Looking forward to the battle though.

IMO Daemons Are going to take this. If the grinders can draw good fire and put out some good damage, I can see a victory for jy2

Yeah, I don't get it.

She failed a like 3 inch charge? I'm guessing she already used her jetpack so couldn't reroll.

Also, How the heck did the Herald take her down in one round of combat?

Despite her 2+ save, she failed everyone of them! She was having an off day.

She was with the unit of sisters who were in terrain. Thus, -2 to their charge range, making it a 5" charge.

The Herald was Invisible with 3++. I believe it was just good rolling by me and bad rolling by SabrX.

IRC, Jy2's herald has some item or special rule that allow it to force a challenge, which Celestine can't deny.

Yeah, I would try to deny a challenge with her. Just crazy that she failed all that. She should be able to clean up or at least lock them up until she needs to H&R.
