Can the 3 Knight Adamantine Lance formation be taken as my Primary detatchment in a Battle forged army and give warlord to one of the Knights ? or is the formation exclusive of this ?

Are any of the Knights (Characters)?
Are there any other Characters available in the Army?

I know that if you take a Knight primary Detachment that one of them must be your warlord and gains the Character USR, I do not know if that works the same for this Formation.

A Formation of Knights is not the same as a Knight Detachment.

Actually that's not entirely correct. From 'The Warlord' section of the rulebook:

The model you choose as your Warlord also determines your Primary Detachment.

So it is your choice of Warlord that makes a detachment a primary detachment. In order for a Knight detachment to be the primary detachment, the Warlord must be from that detachment.

so then can you choose a model in a formation to be your warlord.. hence making it your primary detatchment ? its a bit confusing

Since a formation is a detatchment, and it contains 3 knights, you may indeed take one as your warlord.


Luckily the adamantine lance formation specifically states it must include 3 errants or paladins, and thus you cant get a Lancer as your warlord. That would be a bit OP.

You can nominate one of the knights in the lance formation to be your warlord.

They do not become a character simply by being selected as your warlord.

They do not have a warlord trait.

I would guess that this formation is part of the Faction: Imperial Knights?

They do get a Warlord Trait.

After looking at the FAQ for knights black talos is correct.

further they do become a character as well, from the faq.

I did not know that they gained the (Character) as well... thanks for that!

looking in the knight codex its not in there, looks like it was added in the faq.

There are Restrictions to selecting your warlord, so one can not simply select any Model in the army without first addressing those Restrictions. Hence the question about it being a character, as it would be bumped far down the list of acceptable warlords had it not been granted that status by Frequently Asked Question. As it is now a (Character), it can be selected without issue as the Warlord and gains a few additional benefits even if not.
