Beyond the Beltway

Or Just, "Roads". I couldn't resist the Kerouac reference.

Welcome to Round 11 of the League of Extraordinary Riveters Terrain Contest.

The title pretty much describes the theme, a scratch-built piece of terrain that show how our little metal and plastic meeples get from point A to point B. Simple? Ah, there are several catches. The first is that it does not need to be an asphalt road. It could be a game trail, a railroad, a bridge, any sort of pathway really, just something that creatures (who says it is for humans ?) will use for travelling on or under the ground, or over the water (probably not in the air or through space, although that would be interesting to see, and if you can pull it off, then by all means go for it.) The second is that you may (and probably should), at your discretion, include some roadside attractions. You can use your imagination here or you could use your imagination for the road. Or both. It's all good

Rules:
1. There has to be a road or something like a "road".
2. It has to be scratch-built. Other than that, use what materials you will. So you can use all the bits you want, from kits, homemade, junk from the recycling bin (my favorite source) etc.
3. Any scale, any size, so long as it fits on the standard 4x4 or 6x4 tabletop for gaming. And any gaming system.
4. Dioramas are permitted. Playable terrain is permitted.
5. Post the occasional WIP in this thread, and of course links to more WIPS on your own threads or galleries or blogs. Have at least 1 WIP of the unpainted or unfinished project please, and with a mini on a recognizable base size (25mm) for scale.
6. Do not post final photos in this thread. PM me with the links to your galleries, albums, what have you.
7. Six or more photos of your final entry, showing all the important parts. Well lit too. I have the presbyopia, so dimly lit is hard for me to see :(
8.(Provisional) Have your final entry completed and notify me by 12:00am EST (that is GMT-4 at the moment) on Sunday 12 October 2014 where to find the photos. This gives 10 weeks.. It will also leave 11 weeks for the final contest of the year. There is the option of extending it if enough contestants have RL issues that delay them, but only by a short time. Or we could go to 11 weeks, given that August is vacation month. Final decision based on input from participants.
9. (Optional) Put the updated terrain contest banner in your sig. Here is the HTML for it {url=http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/609100.page#7093794]{img]http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/11/8/429237_md-.jpg{/img]/{url] change the "{" to "["
10. The Rule of Cool. Should go without saying but, I'm saying it anyway. Bear in mind that this means finding a place for some rivets. Something needs to hold this crazy world together. Can you think of anything better?

Judging:
A 100 point scale, as follows;

0-45 points for the Modelling
-0-10 Originality. Surprise us.
-0-15 Technique and skill. Clean cuts, no gaps, the basics done right. Show us you know how to use the tools of the trade
-0-10 points Design. Is it playable and durable? Is it a well composed diorama? ( or both?)
-0-10 points Materials. Of course you should use what-ever, but original uses of material, especially if the material needs no further work (like painting) to look like what it is supposed to be.

0-30 points for the Painting and/or surface finishes (Like printed material)
-0-10 points for base coat-- smooth, rough, both, as long as it belongs on the piece. A good base coat is neat. The lines are clean, etc.
-0-10 points for good highlighting and shading. Don't care about the how, just the final appearance here.
-0-5 points for a good palette. (ie color choices etc)
-0-5 points for above and beyond. Freehand for example. Show some Mad Skillz.

0-10 Points for Thematic Originality. How original is the idea, or the presentation.

0-15 Points for The Coolness. This is entirely up to the Judges.

I have made the modelling more valuable than the painting because my painting is so-so these days (judge not lest thee be judged), and because I would like to see contestants use materials in a way that require little or even no painting. And for this I would consider using a printer to be 'digital painting'. It is permitted of course, and won't hurt in the least if you do do it.

The Judges:
Me-- Red Harvest
Immygravenimage
DrH

Prizes: (Both are provisional. Better ideas may come in, so this is not definite.)
First Prize: League membership of course. That should be enough really, but to sweeten the pot, hmmm, I'm thinking bits. Mostly IG and Empire (I liked the 'umies, what can I say). Maybe a few vintage minis.
2nd prize: more bits, of course, but not as much as first prize.
Honorable Mention: This will be the contestants' favorite, decided by their votes. it carrys no prize other than the knowledge that your peers recognize your work as worthy, and like it.

All questions cheerfully answered here, or via PM. The same goes for suggestions.

Everybody is welcome to enter. I'll add a list of interested builders, and update it. I'll amend this post as needed. If you see something that needs fixing, do tell.

Neat. The deadline falls between dioramas for me, I think, but I don't think I can commit to it until I know for sure and I've got my current 'rama done. Still very much looking forward to seeing what other people do, and maybe slipping a project in under the radar.

Ooooh, that would be interesting. The Road Warrior was the best of those movies. Back before when we knew that Mel was nutso.

These will be some vintage bits too. Hard to find stuff.

DrH and Inmygravenimage have signed on as the judges, so we have a nice panel for that.

Updating the first post accordingly.

I look forward to seeing what people come up with.

The regulars amongst you will know the drill, but as a reminder and for the new additions; Go fourth and plug this competition. Mention it on your blogs, add the banner to your sig', invite people you think would like enter, spread the word and lets get loads of entries.

I'll try to offer useful advice here and there (completely impartially, of course), but share your ideas and help each other out with c&c and motivation. We're here to learn from each other and make terrain to be proud of, that will raise the look of any table you put it on.

Good luck and enjoy yourselves.

I'm going to give it a go.
I just made a little mushroom themed objective marker for my Fantasy Orcs & Goblins army. It made me want to try my hand at a bigger piece.
So orc-y, goblin-y, mushroom-y, and road like. With rivets.
I've got this.

Can anyone point me to some super simple directions to adding the banner to my sig?

Forgive me now! Tomorrow I may no longer feel guilty...

New Rule, only one entry per builder. Not everybody has FTL terrain building skills.

Paths are good. Especially ones with killer rabbits on them. Moose on the other hand, no please. They tend to bite. A moose once bit my sister...

Ok, Here is a general picture of the idea I have in mind, but wont be exactly like this:

Now I plan on adding additional elements to this piece, which "should" include, but not limited to the following:

Gonna try to make these barricades well detailed, including chips missing, reflectors and the like.

I got a few ideas how to pull this off, but not sure how well they will work out.

Debating if I want to put an AA gun emplacement or not. Like Dr. H said about my last project, the truck did slow me down. So if I take this on, it may be as an extra after the core of the project is done to satisfaction.

Been trying to find a German Shepherd fig but the only one I found on the web (and is not Evil-Bay) is from the Ukraine and getting anything from there now will be a nightmare. Suggestions?

Would like to make this an interactive piece of terrain and not static. Might also put in some of the Pole versions.

Debating having this guard tower actually a part of the guard shack.

OTHER:
Planning to make the wall in the back a combination of stone and metal, topped with razor wire if I can pull off making some of that. Will also try to add street lights as well as flood lights on the walls and buildings. Will also be making several security cameras to place in various areas. Will try to add some security personnel to go along with the dog. One of them I plan to have holding a pole with a mirror on the end. The road to the workable gate will be two lane with the barricades forcing a driver to zig-zag to get to the gate with possibly one road leading out.

The biggest roadblock I have will not be time this time as I am getting in at the beginning. Its going to be a matter of materials as I am tapped out until September. So if anyone can recommend any cheap building materials I don't already use, I would appreciate it. So far I plan on working with:

Foam Core
No Trespassing Signs
Hotel Key Cards
Random Bits
Random Broken Toys
Cork Board
Wooden Dowls
Polystyrene

So what does everyone think? Will try to get a sketch of the idea up tomorrow.

That is actually a very cool idea gamesetc...I would look for train scene stuff in O scale for the dogs...there less detailed...but would look the part...there also some zombie dogs around...I have these...would need some gs skill tho to De-zombiefy them...
My only problem with the whole road theme is...if you're honest to yourself...a road has to be long...I am currently debateing with myself if it needs to be a table scaled project...but that might be too much...

Would like to discuss this thought of mine with the whole class...dios are fine for they show only a tiny slice of a world, but a true terrain piece would have to be a long one to be a still working road convincingly...ruins of course would be on another sheet of paper entirely...thoughts?

I always design terrain with the thought in mind of how can it be added to and manipulated on a table. This project is just one section of a road that can be added to on either end.

I have also found that cork board makes a very convincing asphalt and is easily manipulated for road damage

As you can see here, with my lay out, this piece can continue in either direction on a table. And this is very similar to the security gate at the air force base my wing-nut of a wife was stationed at. However I am thinking the two lane route may be too labor intensive and will probably dial it back to a single lane, one way type of gate.

Just not sure what to base the whole thing on that wont cost more than a couple of dollars.

that´s another thing... I am thinking currently of making a bridge...and would it be a free standing bridge or a based one?...

the sketch looks promising... I would argue due to security a one lane version is more convincing... small holes that are better controllable...

and indeed...cork is probably one hell of a good material for this comp...

I think I want my terrain piece to be a gem on the table too... it shouldn´t be just a shelf piece...this time^^...so it should be a part of a grander scheme...

I am wanting to base this on something as thick as say a clipboard, 2ft by 2ft and wont warp.

Bridge, huh?

I did one like a year ago for miniwargaming.com and I deigned it to close the gap between two tables for Apoc games. The bridge had two versions, one that was intact with gate houses on both ends. It was also fitted with various devices that could be seen on the intact bridge to make it self destruct in the event that the gate houses were lost. So the second version of the same bridge was in ruins. You can see it all here.

Then I did another one as an Asian pond for my Anima Tactics terrain. Check it out here and here. This one actually won the contest that month.

Lastly I did a third project that month, a bridging tank, which can be seen here. Unfortunately I don't have the final pics anymore. =(

Maybe this will give you some ideas.

that was quite a nice collection of slideshows...very inspiring...

my initial plan was to make a lifting bridge... steampunk style... maybe even working...

I can´t figure out certain ways to get the bridge moving for starters... so I am now leaning more towards the stone bridge design... I want to have a troll underneath... a steampunk interpretation of the term...hmm...

have done already a lot of research... and I still have a bit of summer holidays before school starts again (me working as an assistant teacher kind of way...)... so I better use what free time I have

Ok, so rough plan at the moment is a 'bridge' section connecting parts of the orky/hive/slum town I've previously worked on. Plus two 'ramp' sections so that it can be used as a stand-alone piece...plus maybe another rotating platform and any other interesting bits that I can fit into the time frame....as always it'll likely be the painting that holds me up

First collection of starting materials:
