Subject: Dreadnought -new game from E3 that looks pretty interesting
Hey there, so I'm always looking for a good "large ship" type game... ya know, like STO, without the ground stuff. All I want is to be in command of some massively huge massive space ship with gunz
Anyhow... Came across this little thing, still in Alpha, that Dan Abnett apparently wrote, or had a hand in writing:
I've looked around at this, it looked like a MP game that centers around building your own dreadnought and engaging other players. It was months ago and most of the stuff was in German, but I was pretty excited.

I'd certainly be interested in a modern version of Battlecruiser 3000 AD that is less buggy and more immersive. This sub-genre sees far too few attempts at making a cool game, so I'm glad to see anyone giving it a try.

My issue is that it's in-atmosphere, for some reason i don't feel any scale in the environments. They look like heavily armed dropships not capitol ships.
Setting it in space is an easy way to add scale, if you have it in-atmosphere it will have to be insanely detailed to add the scale. It will also require a great deal of post-processing effects to add atmospheric perspective and convincing lighting.

Really? I would've thought setting it in-atmosphere would be an easier way to add scale, as the vehicle's size is contrasted with surrounding mountains, treelines, buildings... and of course fighters and dropships swarming around you.
Spoiler:
In space, the only natural points of orientation would be planets and asteroids, which could differ vastly in size...
That being said, a big part of how it would "feel" in-atmosphere is also the ship's movements. I really hope it's going to be sloooow, both in velocity and turn rate.
Also, upon seeing those screenshots I actually felt reminded of an old anime I've watched more than a decade ago.

Lol, as it's just a trailer I can see how you'd get that, but from everything I've seen online, the player will be piloting a ship like the one that shows up and "hits some minor debris" not anything like those "fighter-bombers" that were in the beginning part
The article that got me looking online was from one of the Dan Abnett FB pages, and I believe that there's going to be 5 different classes of ship, each with special abilities of some sort, and as players progress in the game, they'll be able to modify/upgrade their weapons and abilities.
So I guess in that regards, it may be more like CoD online, or Battlefield played online, only in giant space ships instead of grunts.

It's looking pretty good for a game months away from beta.
Agreed. My guess would be that they want to have everything "done" before going to beta testing, so that beta can be fairly short, and finish out any glitches or OP/UP abilities to further balance the game and system.

Yeah seems like it. I'm rather pleased that they will go for an Episodic campaign. Should give writers and devs plenty of time to finely craft something.
Btw, please change the thread title to something with Dreadnought in it.

Still looks a tad too nimble for my taste. These are giant hovering fortresses, not harriers! I really hope they turn down the agility of the ships a notch.
And make it so that the artillery ship actually needs to line up its 500 meter railgun instead of having a cone of fire...

When I saw the link in the OP along with the tag line "STEP ONTO THE BRIDGE AND BECOME A LEGEND" I was expecting awesome 1st person command chair type action.
Think the old star trek academy games but for the modern age.....what we have is Star Conflict in atmosphere :(
Think I will just wait for star citizen and cruise the stars

Judging by the video, I think the Corvette may be fairly close to being "good" in my eyes, and the Dreadnought itself looks fairly immobile/makes you plan way ahead of time, but I don't think we got all that good a look at most of the other ones in terms of mobility.
As for the artillery ship, yeah, I can kinda see that... however, for a game it makes sense to have a cone of fire, because all them damn corvettes zipping around

We can't say for sure until we see a proper gameplay vid, I suppose. If what we saw was sped up a little for demonstration purposes I'd be relieved!
The corvette looked okay for a sort of Millennium Falcon, but the dread really didn't evoke that star destroyer vibe what with being able to turn that fast. If I were a designer, I'd expand the "plan ahead" factor to several seconds at minimum. It would make it somewhat more difficult to play, but you do get (or should get) the impressive armour and armaments to make up for it. And if it's still too slow, that's what the destroyer is for.
Preferences, tho. We likely all have different "thresholds" for what we feel would be "just right".

I bet you're not supposed to engaging those with the railgun, anyways - the artillery ship seems like a dedicated Dread-killer to me. Perhaps there's a bit of a rock-paper-scissors balance going on there?
Of course I can still see a cone making sense from a gameplay point of view, but ... it just feels wrong, man. If whatever you shoot can make such tight turns the ship wouldn't have to be so ridiculously long!

Also... maybe it was just the old 40k fan in me, but I was kinda hoping the dreadnoughts would have an enormous nose cannon, like the Nova Cannons in one of the Battle Cruisers

You're totally wrong about setting it in-atmosphere being easier to add scale, it is unequivocally the opposite. However those high res pictures do look okay, particularly the last one. So credit to them, i still think it's the wrong choice though.
There are a myriad of games that convincingly add scale to space. Many of which are decades old. It's far easier, you require only a cubemap and a few features to fill the space. This means you can have insane draw distances, decently high-poly structures and still maintain a decent framerate. You can literally have objects miles in size and miles apart. I suppose if all the environments look like Greenland they might be okay.
it also goes without saying that having such craft in-atmosphere is totally redundant. Assuming that mobility of these craft is governed by a finite resource and that the laws of physics apply, taking such craft in-atmosphere would be highly inefficient.

You should send them a letter informing them of all this. You should also inform George Lucas and Bungie that there's no sound in space, as well. The truth can't be contained, man.

I don't think any game can make space ships as boring as EVE
Cause EVE isn't about space ships. It's a Spreadsheet simulator.
I hope they have full 3d controls for this game.
