Well, TrinocCon is usually a shambles, so expect that. It's the most badly organised
SF/F con I've ever attended on either side of the Atlantic.
Because of that, last year's turnout was pretty low. It was thrown together at the very last minute by a volunteer from one of the local stores and although he did his best it wasn't great. It was also boycotted by the large
40k group in the Triangle (although to be fair, again I point out the tourney was organised at very short notice), which meant that the final turnout was about 8, I think. Most of whom were store regulars.
And remember that basically TrinocCon don't care about
40k. They care about D&D because it drags in about 200+ people. But a dozen or so
40k players is nothing to them (and who can blame them?).
And because of the general lack of organisation (the convention is less than 3 months away and there's still next to nothing on the website - which is perfectly usual) I wish you the very best of luck in getting an answer from the TrinocCon people. I found they were really, really nice (I helped get the tournament ball rolling last year) when they finally got back in touch with me, but it took a long while (about two-and-a-half months for one e-mail reply).
And also don't forget you'll be shelling out for prizes from your own pocket in most likelihood. People don't want to pay $25+ to get in the door and then shell out more money for the tourney (which is the only reason they came). So it might be expensive.
Okay, that's the bad news. What's the good?
Well, I won last year.
I thought that was good.
The mix of armies in NC is really, really good. For example, at last year's Trinoc-Con there was a balanced
IG army (mine), a Dark Eldar Wyche Cult, a SOB army, a Necron, a cheesed-out Blood Angels army, and a few others (going from my rusty memory). That's usually the rule around here. With some exceptions, most players around here are interested in odd armies and having fun. (So if anyone from Dakka Dakka travels down here you could get some easy wins - how's that for encouragment!
).
You've got a guaranteed date and place. And it's being held in Raleigh this year, rather than Durham, which is a plus.
There are lots of other things to interest players during downtime.
In short, an
RTT at TrinocCon could be really, really good. It will need a lot of hard work though. My best wishes and the best of luck to you.
If you need any help, let me know. I'd be happy to assist. (Although I'll also be happy to play... it would be a good chance to unviel my new Tau army...
)
EDIT: The website seems down at the moment, so hopefully they're updating it as we speak.
