i am building up a storm lords army and was wondering if anyone has had experience with painting vertically spilt schemes. (they are half red and half white with yellow helments. should i just tape them off or just steady my hand and go at it?

A new day, a new time zone.

Tape it, to ensure you get a waver free line.

yeah. i have some blue art tape for work. that should work. i just know that bleeding does happen and red on white isnt exactly forgiving.

looking at the gw painted storm lords it seems as though a fine black or scab red line has also been used to define it more.

I did a split scheme on my Dark Angels.  I tried to use tape on the marines but in the end found it was too fiddly and did not work.  So, I ended up just free handing the split.  Before you say you can't, give it a try.

Just divide the marine into sections.  The only parts to have a split are the helmet, chest, backpack, and pelvis.  Use points on the section to keep you lines straight.  On the chest use the belt buckle and the chest eagle as reference points.  On the helmet use the mouth grill and the ridge on the top of the helmet.  Now, the hardest part was the helmet.

Here is a link to my marines:

They are the 5th army under Army Features.

I eyeball it, the numberous details on the models can make it more time comsuming to use tape. If I need a line, like on a vehicle I use a ruler and a lightly drawn pencil line.

thanks everyone for the input. thankfully the helments are not split so no worries there. so far i have painted up some scouts. i found that the easiest way was just to pencil in a line as refrence and then just go at it carefully. i will have pictures up eventually. tha sm's and the scouts, and the termies shouldnt be a problem, its the land speeders that i have worries on, although i took a old rhino i had lying arround and practiced doing a split on it, so im not to worried.

my main remaining question is what are your sugestions as to how to paint the librarian with t armour. i am considering all blue with white and red shoulderpads and the yellow hood, but then again red white and blue is going to look really stupid.

Still trying to operate tape cassettes

Can't see why it would look to stupid. If not, keep the Chapter colours to a minimum, ie. just one shoulderpad, or a kneepad. Or, you could do it in the Chapter colours, and paint the robes blue.

I painted split color marines freehand; it's actually pretty easy.  You can see some pictures here

I don't think that is so bad. I saw a SM army painted in red, white, and blue, with the chapter banner being the Stars and Stripes and it looked quite nice. It's a little different, and if done well (like any paint scheme), looks nice. The Vostroyans are a Russian throw-back, and in WD a few issues ago, there was an IG army modeled off a WWI army (US or Brit, I can't remember). Back on topic. I usually eyeball lines on troops, but it's a bigger problem with vehicles, where a mistake would really show up. I would suggest tape for vehicles. -Jmz

Problem with using tape is that its difficult to get it down properly over say a Marine Torso. You are probably better off just eyeballing it and using a flat brush and/or a steady hand.

I've done some split scheme Marines and just used a flat brush: Iron Cranes
