And, no, I'm not talking about the restaurant chain.

http://www.cnet.com/news/twin-peaks-returning-show-creators-hint-online/

Spoiler:
Will we ever discover what happened to F.B.I. Special Agent Dale Cooper? Will the Log Lady ever give us veiled messages from beyond? Will the "Welcome to Twin Peaks" population sign greet us once again?

With the success of the "Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery" Blu-ray and DVD box set, that show we love is now back in style again. Rumors about the return of the bizarre yet beloved TV series "Twin Peaks," which aired from 1990 to 1991, circulate more than Bob possesses bodies. But thanks to a couple of cryptic tweets we might actually be seeing Agent Cooper and gang back on the scene.

On Friday, both creators of the original "Twin Peaks" TV series -- David Lynch and Mark Frost -- hinted cryptically that fans could be in for a treat.

Lynch and Frost each tweeted the identical message: "Dear Twitter Friends: That gum you like is going to come back in style! #damngoodcoffee"

The quote is from "Twin Peaks" episode 3 from season 1, when The Man From Another Place, aka the Dancing Man, tells Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) in backwards-frontwards speak that "I've got good news. That gum you like is going to come back in style."

And the "damn good coffee" hashtag refers to Agent Cooper's regular compliment about the java he constantly drinks while attempted to solve mysterious murders in "Twin Peaks."

While all we have to go on for the moment are both Lynch and Frost's tweets, fans have been speculating for a while that "Twin Peaks" may return for a new set of stories.

According to the fan site Welcome to Twin Peaks, actor Ray Wise, who played victim Laura Palmer's father on the show, has his own ideas what a new "Twin Peaks" show or movie might be about:

"They wouldn't remake it," Wise said. "If anything was done, it would be 25 years later. It would never be a remake of anything we already did. Maybe you just didn't mean to use that word, I don't know. A remake, no, but it would be something new and fresh. David always said the town of "Twin Peaks" is still there; it's still going on whether we watch it or not. So, who knows what'll happen in the future? It would be 25 years later, not anything remade."

Lynch himself answered the question recently at the Lucca Film Festival about the possible continuation of "Twin Peaks" in either movie or TV format.

"I've always said I love a continuing story," Lynch answered. "To love a world and to be able to go deeper and deeper into that world. So there's always a possibility and you just have to wait and see."

Even though we have only two tweets to go on, it's always a good idea to take notice. After all, it was Agent Cooper himself who said on the show, "When two separate events occur simultaneously pertaining to the same object of inquiry we must always pay strict attention!"

Given my sig and my avatar, it should come as no surprise that any hint of a return to one of the greatest TV shows ever would be extremely exciting for me. So, if Twin Peaks did return to TV as a new series, what form do you think it will take? A sequel like Ray Wise believes, taking place 25 years later (damn, has it really been that long?) Or a remake of the original, with an all new cast? A sequel could be interesting, allowing for some of the original cast to reprise their roles. I'm still not sure what to think, trying not to get my hopes up too high.

EDIT: Ooh, a poster:

EDIT, 4/30/2016: Cast list announced!
Spoiler:

Interesting to note that, neither Lara Flynn Boyle nor Moira Kelly (Donna in the TV version/Donna in the movie) will return. Did they recast the role of Donna, or is the character eliminated? I guess we'll know when Mark Frost finishes his book.

You are a ninja, good sir. I was just about to post this myself.

Like you, I'm trying to keep my expectations under control. But I don't know what else their tweets could mean. The boxed set they've been pumping is out already. Perhaps in shooting those promo spots with the old cast members, Lynch's wheels started turning?

Besides, the timing is basically perfect...

I could sure go for a piece of pie right about now. Woo-hoo!

Somewhere in south-central England.

No point in a remake. A sequel would be much more interesting.

I was given the boxed set of Twin Peaks recently. I ought to break it out and have a long session.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

Only an ocean keeps me from rudely showing up at your doorstep for a marathon.

This was such a wonderful show and a pleasure to turn over and over in conversation after soaking up an episode, especially with a thoughtful friend or two.

There was talk earlier this year about the continuation. The news was going around six months ago and thern silence.
They are running out of time for the 25th anniversary.

Lynch and MacLachlan have both expressed interest. The main trouble is that most of the principle cast have not aged well, and Twin Peaks had a strict glamour to its cast for all age groups.

Some of that came from the fact that they cast some old-school star actors (people like Piper Laurie and Richard Beymer), which was almost unheard for a TV show back then. Today, big stars doing TV is almost commonplace.

Clearly they would have to work in a bunch of younger actors, and they wouldn't have to bring back everyone from the original cast.

One of the big lessons from the original series is that Lynch and Frost need to keep a tighter grip on the reins this time. Some of the Season 2 issues happened because of too many cooks in the kitchen.

And of course -- this goes unmentioned a lot but it was a real factor -- ABC majorly screwed up by moving a show with so many young viewers from Thursday to Saturday for Season 2. That was the definition of insanity in programming terms. I think that whichever network would pick it up -- and I could see it move to cable or possibly even a premium channel -- would handle it much better these days.

Someone else might have more information about this than me, but I wonder whether that command by the network happened before or AFTER the show had suffered such a massive rating decline.

The reveal also wasn't what did the show in, IMO. The murderer (more or less) was revealed in episode 14 of season 2, and the rating decline was already WELL underway. It wasn't like Moonlighting, where viewers steadily lost interest after Dave and Maddie finally got together.

The Psych episode 'Dual Spires' (season 5 episode 12) that was an homage of Twin Peaks is a fun episode if you've seen the latter.

I think you are missing the point sorry.

Twin Peaks cast a lot of older actors, but almost all of them looked a sprightly old age. Television is very shallo0w, non photogenic people dont attract sympathy and thus do not get to be interesting characters. There are exceptions, but most are obvious exceptions even most depictions of ugly people are handsome-ugly. Good example of that is this character:

Sadly a lot of the original cast still available have got very unphotogenic, and are thus risky choices. It would be equally risky ro recast for this reason, while consumers are shallow they dont like to have that truth pointed out to them.
Kyle Machlachlan still "has it" though.

Well, you did say "glamour," not "photogenic," in your original post, but our points are not too dissimilar. Old Hollywood had a certain glamour to it that new Hollywood lacks, and I'm not just talking about how good people looked. It was a certain style, the way they walked, the way they talked, an element of gravitas and personal presence that is missing from most of today's Hollywood. David Lynch was able to tap into that then, but I don't know how well he could do so today. Admittedly, if he were to do a new Twin Peaks today, he would be able to spread a vastly huge casting net and pick almost anybody he wants, so it may not be much of a problem. It would also largely depend on the size of the roles any original cast would be playing.

If anything, when it comes to casting, the loss of Frank Silva would be the greatest hurdle to overcome, in my opinion.

WOO-HOO!

I have to admit that I thought this day would never come.

I had a feeling it'd end up on a premium channel. They'll probably give Lynch and Frost plenty of room and budget to do their thing.

I'm kind of ambivalent about htis. The original was a breathtakingly amazing series that got progressively bogged down until it became almost unwatchable.

Too many cooks or not, it suffered from the American Broadcast TV need to stretch anything that is good until it becomes poop. Twin Peaks would have been much better as a one season story arc with a definite ending. A sort of extended version of the kind of miniseries' that you see alot of in UK TV.

I'm sure the new stuff will be better than most of what's on TV, but I'd be alot more excited about the new season if the last season had been alot better.

This. So much this. I have trouble seeing it being as engaging more than two decades later. I appreciate Twin Peaks more for its overall impact than for the show itself, but then I feel like that about most of Lynch's stuff.

Does the show hold up? I have never seen an episode, and Twin Peaks is one of those shows I feel like I should give a watch. Sorta like Dr. Who.

I think the show still holds up very well. There isn't an over reliance on technology within the show that would date it, it still feels timeless in a way.
It is, however, a very slow moving show, compared to much of what we see today. Lynch likes to take his time to set his scenes and his characters.

I'd say the first season holds up quite well. The slow pace doesn't hurt the show at all (though I'm the kind of person that enjoys Foyle's war...). Rather, it's the lack of direction in the later episodes and the feeling that those in charge of the show lost track of where they were going. My wife and I watched it last year and were absolutely riveted at first. However once they solve the initial mystery, the whole thing starts going south. Our interest began to wane and we dropped the show without watching the last 5 episodes or so. It's rare for me to drop a series so close to the end, but Twin Peaks made it pretty easy for us.

It's on Netflix, so if you have it, I'd definitely recommend giving it a shot. Enjoy the ride but don't feel guilty about getting off when you want to.

A bit of news (sorry if this counts as a thread necro).
Mark Frost will be writing a book to fill in the 25 year gap.

And how, HOW did I never see the Twin Peaks 12 Days of Christmas (spoilers in that video, BTW) before now?!

A few weeks ago, while sitting on a panel at the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art in Australia, David Lynch hinted that there was trouble in paradise with regards to the anticipated Showtime reboot of Twin Peaks (see Is David Lynch's Twin Peaks Reboot No Longer Happening?). While sources close to the show initially attempted to gloss over Lynch's cryptic comments, it looks like bad news for fans of the surrealistic cult drama. Lynch announced yesterday, via Twitter, that he is officially pulling out of the project.

"Dear Twitter Friends," Lynch wrote in a series of four tweets. "Showtime did not pull the plug on Twin Peaks. After 1 year and 4 months of negotiations, I left because not enough money was offered to do the script the way I felt it needed to be done. This weekend I started calling actors to let them know I would not be directing. Twin Peaks may still be very much alive at Showtime. I love the world of Twin Peaks and wish things could have worked out differently."

Lynch had reportedly already written the scripts alongside co-creator Mark Frost, and was set to direct the full nine-episode run, which was scheduled to premiere in 2016 (see Artist David Lynch to Resurrect Surrealist TV Drama Twin Peaks, and Kyle MacLachlan Returns to David Lynch's Twin Peaks After 25 Years).

It's hard to imagine a Twin Peaks without David Lynch, and as much as we'd love to revisit the town 25 years later (just as Laura Palmer promised), we hope the network has the sense not to attempt to attach another director to the project.

Showtime remains optimistic that the deal with Lynch could still work out, stating: "We were saddened to read David Lynch's statement today since we believed we were working towards solutions with David and his reps on the few remaining deal points. SHOWTIME also loves the world of Twin Peaks and we continue to hold out hope that we can bring it back in all its glory with both of its extraordinary creators, David Lynch and Mark Frost, at its helm."

The only thing that would make me sadder than not running more Twin Peaks would be having someone other than Lynch call the shots.

I'm sad, but hopefully they renegotiate or just shelve the idea.

Let's see what happens. The release from Showtime indicates that the door is still open.

Besides (this may be a somewhat heretical thought)...does this series really need David Lynch to direct if the eps have been written already?

Other than the pilot, Lynch only directed one other episode of TP in that killer first season. What's more, the last TP material he directed was Fire Walk With Me...which was in a decidedly different style than the TV series. I'm a fan of Lynch, but I'm not sure how well the new series would go over if it was FWWM-style. I think the more dialed-back, lightly surreal, cool vibe of the original series is more likely to be commercially and critically successful. Lynch may understand this...or he may be inclined to give audiences a shot of 180-proof Lynch, which I think will burn on the way down.

Personally, I always felt like Frost was a steady, moderating influence on Lynch, and so long as he's on board, this series still has a chance to be good IMO. There are *lots* of talented directors who would be on board to direct a TP episode.

Honestly, it sounds like Lynch wasn't getting the payday he wanted.
Fortunately, there is a huge talent pool of writers to draw upon today compared to 25 years ago, and many of them could quite likely write a better return to Twin Peaks than Lynch could. After all, Frost is the one writing the book covering the 25 year gap. So, we'll see what happens.

It's not only that David Lynch will not direct -- he will not be involved at all, save for having co-written the scripts. And he had more involvement than that on the original series. But the major hurt here will be his seeming censure of the show. It's one thing for people to say "well it's weird but it's David Lynch" and it's another thing for them to say "it's only weird because it is trying to be David Lynch."

Well, when Frank Darabont left the Walking Dead, people thought the sky was falling. But the show significantly improved with the new showrunner and other writers. Robert Kirkman was the comic's creator, but Darabont was the guy who adapted it and brought it to TV.

Clearly it's better from a marketing standpoint to have Lynch involved. But from a creative standpoint, the show could be fine without him. Maybe even better. Episode 2 (directed by Lynch; technically episode 3 if you count the pilot as episode 1) might be my fave of the whole series. But I thought he laid an egg with episode 8, and I've felt for years that it was a momentum-killer that started the issues with season 2.

And assuming Lynch will still get a writing credit, will most viewers even realize his "absence"?
