My friends wanted to go up against my Eldar Phantom Titan, so we decided to have a really large game. However, we are actually going with legal, Bound lists. I am running 1 single-CAD Eldar with the Phantom and Eldar allies whereas Chris is running AM with lots of tanks and Gerry Imperial Knights with Space Marines. Going into the game, I was assuming that Chris would be bringing his Reaver Battle Titan. However, he surprised me by NOT bringing it! Ok, if they want to have a David vs Goliath match, that's fine with me. No one messes with the Phantom and lives to tell the tale!

BTW, I opted to bring a semi-competitive Eldar list and opted to go with minimal serpents. However, I did bring 1 wraithknight for each and every Imperial Knight that my opponents brought. (I actually offer to let them run my Imperial Knights as well.)

5000 Eldar w/Phantom Titan vs Imperials

5K Eldar (My list)

This is an approximation of their lists.

Chris:

3x Leman Russ Exterminators/Vanquishers - Pask

5x Tempestus Scions - all meltas

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Missions:

Objectives: The most points win.

Each Victory Point = 1-pt.

Each 3 Hull Points/Wounds on a Super-heavy/Gargantuan = 1-pt.

Each Objective = 3-pts.

There will be 6 objectives. Each Player turn, the player rolls to see which 3 of the 6 objectives he must score.

First Blood, Linebreaker, Slay the Warlord = 2-pts each.

Deployment: Modified Dawn of War

1st Turn: Imperials

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PRE-GAME THOUGHTS:

Wow, without the Reaver, this is going to be a slaughter. I was hoping to crush, I mean, face the Reaver Titan + 6 Imperial Knights. Instead, Chris decided to go tank-heavy and Gerry, well, Gerry kind of hasn't played in a while. In any case, who wins (me!) isn't important (me!). What's important is that we got together for a few beers and that we are going to forge that narrative. (me!)

As for tactics, hey....who need tactics! I'm playing Eldar.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Deployment:

Spoiler:
For my psychic powers, I get:

Farseer #1 (with Stone) - Daemon Summoning powers
Farseer #2 - Shrouding, other powers
Warlock - Conceal, Destructor

Imperial deployment. Tempestus Scions will be deepstriking.

My deployment. I castle up in the corner with the Phantom and then bubble-wrap him with Guardians, thus denying my opponents melta double-tap range.

Wraithknights deploy behind cover. Ignore the flyer and guys on top of the bastion. They're actually in reserves.

BTW, Chris was supposed to bring me the 4th wraithknight but "accidentally" forgot. Well, that's ok. I'll just put him in reserves and he'll come in when one of the other wraithknight dies.

Another view of the Imperial deployment.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Imperials 1

Spoiler:

Knights advance. 2 drop pods come in, including the Sternguards with Marine Captain and 1 tactical squad. My opponent must've had a 3rd drop pod in his army.

Shooting takes off 4W from one of my wraithknights.

He also takes off 4 HP's from my Titan.

This turn, the Imperials get all 3 of their objectives, with the Stormlord and 1 of their tanks on both of their objectives in their own deployment zone and the tactical squad on one of my objectives. They also get 1VP for taking off 3HP from my super-heavy.

VP's - Eldar: 0, Imperials: 10

Eldar 1

Spoiler:

Bye bye knighty. It was nice knowing you.

The rest of my movement. Empty serpent goes to c*ck-block the Knight Cerastus. Guardians and fire dragon wave serpent prepare to deal with sterns.

Farseer (I'll call him my Stoneseer as he is the one with the Stone of Anath'lan) with Autarch summons 1 unit of Pink Horrors. The other farseer (with Guardian blob) casts Shrouding.

Psych! Empty serpent moves flat-out to c*ck-block the Knight Paladin instead.

Shooting from the Phantom's secondary guns takes out 8 tactical marines.

Shooting from his primary guns (along with the guardians) take out the sternguards, Space Marine Captain (and also Warlord ) and the Knight Cerastus. Boohoo....should've let him (the Cerastus) live to see what a bada$$ he really was.

I get both First Blood and Slay the Warlord as well as 2VP's for the Imperial Knight.

VP's - Eldar: 8, Imperials: 10

Shooting by my knights fail to do anything to his knight. I then charge. 1 of my wraithknights fails his charge.

No matter. I still smack down the Acheron with only 2 of my wraithknights.

VP's - Eldar: 10, Imperials: 10

Finally, I score 1 objective with my guardian blob squad.

VP's - Eldar: 13, Imperials: 10

Imperials 2

Spoiler:
The only way my opponents are going to win this is through the objectives. I hope they've realized this.

All 3 Tempestus Scions come in and all 3 land directly on target!!!

Unfortunately for Chris, between subpar rolling on his part, holo-fielded saves and then Shrouding cover from my farseer, 12 meltas = 0 damage.

Both the vendetta and the stormguppy comes in as well. Castigator moves in for the kill.

In an outstanding turn of shooting, the Imperials take out 2 wraithknights and take off 5W from the last WK.

Ah....so close and yet so far. But wait, my opponents then remember the unit of 2 surviving tacticals from his drop pod, one of which has a missile launcher.

VP's - Eldar: 13, Imperials: 12

Oh no he didn't....he did!

VP's - Eldar: 13, Imperials: 13

On top of the 3 wraithknights killed, the Imperials also manage to grab 2 objectives (both of which were in their deployment zones once again!).

VP's - Eldar: 13, Imperials: 19

Eldar 2

Spoiler:

Thanks to the Autarch, almost all of my reserves come in. Spiders drop by the tank destroyers. They almost scatter off the table.

Crimson Hunter goes after the Knight Paladin. Fire dragons disembark to go after him as well.

4th WK comes in. Pink horrors advance.

Swooping hawks and guardians go to deal with the scions.

My Warlord (the Autarch) and farseer move into enemy territory without a care in the world.

Shooting by the Phantom and warp spiders take out 2 of the tanks and does 1HP of damage to the 3rd. However, I do not get a VP as they are a squadron.

Stoneseer summons a unit of plaguebearers. Phantom pops Pask's tank, but still no VP as they are a squad of 3 tanks.

I do 3 HP's of damage to the Paladin between the fire dragons and the Crimson Hunter.

Finally, I kill a bunch of Tempestus but they all pass Morale.

The Phantom then assaults the drop pod and wrecks it.

More importantly, the horrors make a 9" charge to tie up his knight.

I lose 7 after combat resolution and Daemonic Instability, but at least his knight won't be able to do anything next turn.

So this turn, I get 1VP for taking off 3HP's from the Imperial Knight, 1VP for the drop pod, 1 unit of Tempestus and another 3 VP's for having 1 objective (with my guardian blob squad).

VP's - Eldar: 19, Imperials: 19

If my opponents can keep this up - grabbing all those objectives - they might actually have a shot to take down Goliath (me!).

Imperials 3

Spoiler:

Veterans disembark. Between them and perhaps 1 or 2 other units, they manage to shoot down all of my warp spiders.

VP's - Eldar: 19, Imperials: 20

Shooting reduce my WK to just 2W left.

He takes out the newly arrived plaguebearers (fear the Touch of Rust!).

VP's - Eldar: 19, Imperials: 21

Hydra takes off 2HP's from my flyer and force me to jink.

Knight Paladin goes after the Phantom....

....and makes it!!!

I do 2 HP's to him in close-combat. However, the paladin rolls a on the Destroyer table against the Phantom and takes out 11 HP's (plus I lost 1HP previously from his shooting)!!!

VP's - Eldar: 19, Imperials: 25

Finally, the Castigator finishes off the pink horrors.

VP's - Eldar: 19, Imperials: 26

I believe the Imperials only score 1 objective this turn as I have my Autarch+farseer contesting one of their objectives.

VP's - Eldar: 19, Imperials: 29

Overall, a very good turn for my Imperial opponents!

Eldar 3

Spoiler:

Farseer joins the swooping hawks. Both the fire dragons and the swooping hawks then prepare to assault the Paladin.

They take out the Paladin in assault. However, the explosion also takes out the fire dragons and all but 1 swooping hawk. It might have also taken off 1-2HP's from the Phantom.

VP's - Eldar: 20, Imperials: 30

Shooting and then assault by my HQ unit wrecks the leman russes.

VP's - Eldar: 21, Imperials: 30

I also finish off both units of Tempestus with a multi-assault by my guardians.

VP's - Eldar: 23, Imperials: 30

Windrider jetbikes then turbo-boost to score the Objective underneath the Stormlord.

Wraithknight charges in against the Castigator and both survives.

This turn, I believe I grab 2 of my objectives, 1 with the wave serpent and another 1 with my jetbikes.

VP's - Eldar: 29, Imperials: 30

Imperials 4

Spoiler:
This will actually be the last game turn due to time.

Unit deepstrikes from the vendetta. They then run towards the objective (only needed 3" but ran 2") but is just short by millimeters. Doh!!!

To make matters worse, that objective was worth double-points to my opponents because they rolled for and got it twice! That's probably game right there.

The Castigator finishes off my wraithknight, but not before I am able to take off 3 HP's from him.

VP's - Eldar: 30, Imperials: 31

Imperials also take out 1 unit of bikers (actually, he takes out 2 units of bikers).

VP's - Eldar: 30, Imperials: 33

Finally, the Imperials take out the Crimson Hunter.

VP's - Eldar: 30, Imperials: 34

Although they didn't get the 2x Objective, they did manage to get the other objective.

VP's - Eldar: 30, Imperials: 37

Eldar 4

Spoiler:

Autarch shoots and then assaults the Stormlord, taking 2HP off of it.

Stoneseer summons another unit of plaguebearers, who grab the objective.

Wave serpent knocks out the chimera....

VP's - Eldar: 31, Imperials: 37

....while grabbing the objective as well.

Stoneseer then goes to assault the hydra and manage to take off 1 HP from it.

Between the Phantom, my other wave serpent and the Crimson Hunter, I take out both of Imperial flyers - the vendetta and the stormtalon.

VP's - Eldar: 33, Imperials: 37

Phantom also shoots down the scouts and the unit of 2 tactical marines.

VP's - Eldar: 35, Imperials: 37

It might have been this turn or last turn, but I finish off the unit of veterans out in the open as well.

VP's - Eldar: 36, Imperials: 37

My other farseer splits off from the swooping hawk to go grab my 3rd objective.

Finally, the Phantom assaults the drop pod and wrecks it. That's Phantom: 2, Drop Pods: 0.

VP's - Eldar: 37, Imperials: 37

Game ends due to time. Unfortunately, the epic showdown just doesn't happen.

We both get Linebreaker (my Warlord + Farseer, his Knight Castigator).

VP's - Eldar: 39, Imperials: 39

However, I get all 3 of my Maelstrom objectives this turn.

VP's - Eldar: 48, Imperials: 39

Minor Victory to the Space Elves - Eldar!!!

Imperials 5

Spoiler:
Sorry, but the game ended last turn.

Eldar 5

Spoiler:
Sorry, but the game ended last turn.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

POST-GAME THOUGHTS:

Spoiler:
Score-wise, the game actually turned out to be closer than I thought. Even though I was blowing out their army, Chris and Gerry played a smart game and went for the points to actually keep the score respectable. Though had we gone another turn, it would have probably been a tabling unless his knight could survive my Phantom in combat. I was looking for the epic showdown but it just wasn't meant to be (but had his Imperial Knight been Strength D instead of just S10, he probably would have tried to assault my Phantom).

The Phantom did as he was supposed to and that was to kill a whole lot of gak. He shouldn't have been damaged as badly as he was (losing 18 out of 24 HP's), but that was due in part to 1 lucky hit by a knight attack in close-combat who rolled a 6 on the Destroyer charts (just that 1 hit took out 9 or 10 HP's!!!). Other than that, the Phantom is one bada$$ mofo you do not want to f*ck with.

The thing that I had fun with the most though wasn't the Phantom. It was with my Stoneseer summoning Daemons. I swear, he is going to be standard in any Eldar list I run. Not only is Daemon Summoning good, but it is loads of fun as well (probably not so for my opponents). All you need is the Stoneseer with the Mantle (or attached to another Eldar jetbike character with the Mantle) and then just zip them around the board as a disruption unit and for pinpoint summoning.

Overall, it was refreshing to break out my Phantom again. He hardly ever sees any action so anytime anyone wants to challenge him (or any of my other Super-heavies/Gargantuans for that matter), it's game-on. I'll bring the beers and you can just clean your a$$ for my Phantom to spank it.

Thank Christ the Farseer didn't get Invisibility; casting that on the Phantom would have been one hell of a nasty move.

I wouldn't have done that to them. They were already playing an uphill battle. No need to kick a puppy while it's down.

Thanks. I was hoping to see a titan on the other side as well. It would have made for a more balanced matchup, but it's ok if the opponent wants to try different things.

Hey jy2, just want to point out you cannot take an Allied Detachment of Eldar, if your Primary Detachment is Eldar.

Of course, as long as you guys agreed on a house rule allowing it, it's OK.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Yeah, I know that.

Here, we mainly follow the rules for the BAO, which does allow for self-allying. Of course, in such a large game, I can also break up the army into 2 detachments.

A great read. You should play another game but this time using tyranids to crush those filthy imperials.

I'm also interested in using "stoneseer". The only thing I need are some daemons. And here come 2 questions.

1) Do you just get the primaris spell in daemonology and then take smth else (probably telepathy) or everything into it in order to be able to summon screamers/heralds/hounds?

2) Do you think that farseer alone is enough or adding an allied daemon force (11 horrors, herald ml3 portaglyph) would be a good idea?

Will do. Next time, I'm bringing my Bio-titan or even my home-made Dominatrix!

1. With the Stoneseer, I just go all in on Malefic powers. I don't even go for Telepathy powers....unless I am playing competitively. But if I really needed to get Shrouding and/or Invisibility and my 1st farseer didn't get it, then I will attempt up to 2 of my powers on my Stoneseer on Telepathy. But I'd always leave 1 slot left for Summoning.

2. I'm a purist and would prefer to keep an all-Eldar force or at the very least, Allies of Convenience. I usually don't run Come the Apocalypse allies. Just my preference.

However, if I didn't care about fluff or any of that, then no, I still wouldn't run Daemon allies. The Eldar army itself is already so strong that adding non-Battle Brother allies in most cases actually makes them worse. Fortunately for me, I own many armies, including a huge Daemon army. So if I wanted to run a true Daemon Summoning army, I'd just go with my Daemons instead.

It was a customized VP game. Every unit was worth 1-VP and every 3 HP's on a super-heavy was also worth 1-VP, no matter if it is a LoW or not.

I would never cast Invisibility on my Phantom unless my opponent does likewise on his Super-heavy (or on a super-deathstar unit). These narrative games are supposed to be fun and an Invisible titan just isn't fun to play against.

Great battle and a very enjoyable read. Thanks! Being an Epic 2nd Edition vet I loved seeing the old Armorcast Phantom and all those modern Knights. And especially that they fought on a large enough table. I am not a fan of those Apoc matches with overcrowded gunlines facing each other. That's boring. Your battle had both tactical AND strategic elements and thus successfully created atmosphere of large scale war. Excellent!

I play Eldar (20k+ collection) too - fantastic fluff, miniatures and rules - and this made me put the Armorcast/Epicast Phantom on my shopping list

A small correction regarding the Farseer + Mantle Autarch tactic... you cannot join a mantle character with others, can you? Not a biggy in this battle but afaik not allowed

But anyway, you taught the Mon-Keigh a lesson, well done

The Mantle model cannot join other units, however, any IC can join the Mantle-wearer.

20K and without a Phantom? Well, obviously, your collection isn't quite BIG enough then. Always good to see the big guys in action and as long as your local community has the tools to battle against one, then go for it!

How many Hull Points did you have on that Revenant?

I don't own a Revenant, but I believe it has 9 HP's.

The Phantom has 24.

That's an amazing phantom titan model. I don't even play Eldar and that model makes me want to. Or, more accurately, it makes me want to play Apocalypse

Yeah, I must admit, many times I buy a unit/model just because it looks so awesome, even if I don't play that army. Then over time, it then becomes an army that I do play.
