A gaming store recently opened near me in Baltimore, so I stopped in to check it out. After seeing the Warhammer kits and figures, I decided to check out the GW website. The more I looked at the figures, the more I wanted to paint some. The next thing I knew, I had piles of kits - waiting to be painted. The addiction had begun.

I say late start, because I am in my fifties and had never even heard of Warhammer before walking into the store last month.

I may never actually play the game, but will definitely be painting lots of figures. I started with the Skaven from IOB, and I am almost finished painting them. Will upload some pics when they are complete.

Have been checking out DakkaDakka galleries for inspiration, so figured I would join.

Hey Jim! Welcome to the forums. The Skaven from IoB are definitely some cool-looking models.

The hobby is definitely a huge part of warhammer, and the best part for many people. Playing the game just adds more depth to the hobby, even if you're aren't playing in a competitive setting. I myself like a nice balance.

Looking forward to seeing your ratmen.

It's a great hobby to chill and paint. Iv never played the game but played the other side when my son did years ago. I love the background and imagination of it all. My main collection is of tyranids and marines, but am thinking of trying another army to collect a few , just for a change really, though iv still loads to make and paint with what I already have. I'm 52 by the way, and when I was 20 something feels like last year. Time flies eh?

I collect stuff to paint first and foremost but I try to do so with gaming in mind so that if I do decide to use it to game then I have a playable force in place.

Welcome Jim! The Skaven side of the IoB got me interested in Fantasy as well, at least in painting terms. Good luck!

Thanks for the welcomes. Should have the Skavens finished by the weekend. (waiting on a new tail for one of them that I broke) Started some Bloodletters yesterday for a change of pace.

Hi,

Finished the Skaven army last night. Posted pictures in the gallery. Any comments or advice is welcome. Not sure how to link to the gallery, but I am sure you guys know how to find it.

Thanks. They looked a lot better with the naked eye than when you photograph them and blow up the picture.

I painted for a LONG time before I found folks to play with. I feel it's always a work in progress, as with any hobby. Good luck with your painting!

You can always stop into the gaming store and check with the staff to see if there have been any others that have just started as well. They may be able to help you start gaming nights and find other players in your area. For me, painting has its own rewards but it's a completely different experience when you pair it with playing the game!

Just took a look at your painting. Looking very nice! You could try hitting the warpstones with a gloss clearcoat if you wanted them to stand out a bit more. You could do a semi-gloss on the hair too, if you wanted, to give some of the rats a glossy/oily look.
