Just looking for a bit of input... I am in the process of converting and generally building my new ork army, and while I'm a little way away from starting painting yet (I'm currently working on a converted vehicle) it wont be long before I need to start priming and putting some paint down.

As such, I though I would take a look at the clan colours, and see if any of them suits the units I like / am building, and so use their scheme on certain models... if that makes sense lol.

As it's orks, and I have a few different units, I may end up doing each unit with their own theme, but some things will be more general, so... needs a theme of its own.

I use/like:

Big Meks
weirdboyz
Mekboy Junka
Deffkopta/warkopta
killa kans
grot tanks / grot megatank
mek gunz
maybe deff dreads

tankbustas and burna boys and lootas are all good, and will probably be used depending on what I'm fighting against.

As I am converting some of the units, it seems deathskulls are appropriate. but then the bad moonz use a lot of vehicles and weirdboyz. I may do a bit of both...

Any thoughts would be appreciated

ps. Also considering turning it into a rebel grot army, but that may be a hard one to come up with a colour scheme for lol

I'm a bad moon player. Big guts and lotsa teef! But yellow is a huge pain in the butt, where-as blue is one of the easiest colors to get good results from. You might want to take that into account as you choose.

While I have seen and heard a lot of sob stories about the pain of painting yellow, I have also seen some cool looking looted vehicles using the yellow panels.

I have some heavy goldbrown (the vallejo iyanden darksun) and I play to try and get some panels done with it. Maybe go for the dirty yellow/gold look. I can always go back and wash it with yellow after.

Its an idea anyway. I may do some yellow and some blue.

Because klans intermingle I don't really care what I paint my guys.

My personal army is bloodaxes/deathskulls, with a good split.

I don't like the bloodaxes paint scheme on vehicles, and I figure 'lore' wise lucky thieves with sneaky gits wot use tactics is probably fairly good as far as mixes go.

So blue vehicles a mix of troops, and all the good bits.

In general I don't really think you have to go mono-klan with an ork army, to keep it fairly close just sort of do general colors and mix and match accents from the klans you want. With special units kind of go w/e klan colors they're most popular with.

Thats how waaaghs are. Just a mash of the klans and each special type is a bit more focused towards certain klans.

Deathskulls seems absolutely fine for the units you've listed, but if you want some badmoons who cares?

There's nothing wrong with that. It's how it was done in 1st and 2nd editions (since each clan had different unit options), but I prefer a unified look on the table-top, so I stick to one clan's colors. Simply a matter of taste.

I play Bad Moonz too. If you're worried about painting yellow I have this shameless self promotion:

You seem to have a lot of units which thematically fit the Bad Moons (big expensive things, and not small cheap units like Slugga boys or grots, as well as Burna Boys---the Bad Moons do have black flames as a motif). You also have a lot of stuff which would be knocked together from scrap (koptas, kans, dreads, lootas), so Deathskulls would make sense as well.

Have you considered a Warband formed from an alliance of clans? Your meks could be Deathskulls and your Weirdboy a Bad Moon, with some units being from each clan. The green ork skin would tie the two together, and you could use the blue and yellow as your 'army colors'.

Despite people often painting an entire army as one clan or the other, it's not in the least uncommon in the background for warbands to be composed of multiple clans.

I had in fact started leaning towards a blue and gold/black theme, as I think it would go quite well.

I had even considered the backstory being something along the lines of:

Some deathskulls went and "looted" a bunch of stuff from a bad moons clan, and have rivetted their own lucky blue panels to the vehicles over the gold.

or

Some bad moonz spent some teef on a bunch of lucky blue deathskulls gear, and then blinged it up with some gold.

Or obviously just have it so its some deathskulls and some bad moons all grouped together in a warband lol.

I think any of those would work

I'm not overly interested in painting yellow, but that ork skin, green wash on yellow is sweet. Well done!

In the Raid on Novem Kastorel, the evil sunz profile mentions that they tend to have a high volume of meks to keep all the clanking, smoke belching contraptions and vehicles. The ork codex also mentions that the death skulls have many meks as well, being they are needed to service the numerous things the death skulls steal. The only real thematic difference is that Evil Sunz probably wouldnt use as many mek guns or perhaps lootas.

The Bad Moonz probably use all the above, only their units will look flashier than any other ork tribe's.
