If something blocks the line of sight drawn from the head of your model to the target's body, the target gets a cover save equal to the cover save granted by the object that is partially blocking line of sight, correct?

E.g. If a bunch of guys are in a forest, they get a 5+ cover save. But if a bunch of guys are behind a forest, in open terrain, but if you have to draw LoS through the forest, they also gain a 5+ cover save (or 4+ if that forest were some ruins instead), correct?

1) Line of Sight is drawn from any part of the body to any part of the target's body (page 14).

2) If the target is obscured, unless specifically stated otherwise, all cover provides a 5+ save (p37).

3) Some terrain, particularly Ruins, (Citadel TM) woods or craters, give a specific cover save to models within them (p108).

4) Some terrain, particularly Walls, Barricades, Defence Lines or Gun Emplacements, give a specific cover save to models behind them (p109).

Therefore, a model in Ruins receives a 4+ cover save, regardless of whether it is obscured, but a model behind a Ruins only receives a 5+ cover save and only if it is obscured.

EDIT - Damn, took too long to type and some one else said it first. Still glad I looked it all up though

Unless specifically stated otherwise, all cover provides a 5+ save. Some types of terrain provide better or worse covers saves; when this is the case the cover save provided will be stated in the rules for the terrain (pg 105) - taken from BRB pg 37.

pg 105 is just the start of the Battlefield Terrain section.

The beginning of pg 108 states that when the term "in cover behind" is used, the model is at least 25% obscured and therefore eligible for a cover save.

When the rule uses the term "in" a piece of terrain, this means that model (or part of it) is actually standing on the piece of scenery, whether it is obscured from view or not.

Woods - difficult terrain - Unless noted otherwise, a model IN COVER BEHIND difficult terrain has a 5+ cover save.

Ruins - Ruins ARE DIFFICULT TERRAIN. Models IN ruins receive a 4+ cover save, regardless of whether or not they are 25% obscured.

To summarize:
unit in a forest, at least 25% obscured from one firer gets a 5+ cover save.

unit in open ground behind trees or ruins, at least 25% obscured from at least one firer, it gets a 5+ cover save.

a unit inside a ruin, obscured or not, get a 4+

Note: some of the cases of "unless otherwise specified" are defense lines, walls, and tank traps, where you get a 4+ for being in cover behind. Rubble is like ruins.

what if the target is completely out of LOS, as with a blast weapon?

I'd assume a 4+ cover save, is this correct?

If he is in a piece of terrain he'd get that terrain's cover save. If he is on open ground behind terrain, and the blast scattered onto him, I dont think he'd get a cover save. The "unlike barrage weapons, blast weapons trce LoS from the firer to the target to deterine whether the target will get a cover save or not" argument doesnt work here because he is completely out of LoS from the firer, and thus would be invulnerable to his blast weapon in terms of LoS.

I assume he'd get a 5+ cover save as he's at least 25% obscured. 100% obscured is at least 25%.
