FFG is putting their SW license to good use, after the RPG and X-Wing they launched Imperial Assault. Being the SW nut that I am, I ordered the basic game box. I like it so far.

Storm Trooper and Luke!

The minis are medium quality plastic, similar to Mantics Mars Attack. The also share the same amount of mold lines.
I would love to see a dedicated high quality miniature release, resin cast. I really think that the softy plastic with all the mold lines is giving the original sculpt ne credit at all...
The sculpts have a 1990s feel, chunky and more in style to Games Workshop minis. I like them!

Here is the always wanted comparison shot:

These are wicked cool. I really like your repaints of the softplastic SW minis, too. How were they to work with?

The softplastic ones are not easy, to remove the mold lines you have to use a NEW knife.
After that a good cleanup, a light white primer and on you go.

As I experienced with doom several years ago & mansions of madness more recently: it's a boardgame. It's not necessarily meant to be painted as compared to dedicated miniatures games which are made specifically with that ìn mind. Being miniatures & paintable is a nice bonus over cardboard standups like arkham horror.

Yup, can only agree, that's why I would love to see a dedicated high quality miniature release, resin cast.

Thanks for the comparison pic! It is interesting that the old prepainted plastics hold up so well in the lineup.

They look like they mix well with the WoTC stuff though which opens up a whole realm of possibilities. Any thoughts on the game itself?

Fantastic work as always! I agree with you on the material, not only is it restic-like the molds were clearly designed by a sadist because they sure do like putting vertical mold lines at right angles to horizontal detail e.g. Luke's legs or the Jedi's arm wraps..

..and let's not even talk about the damned wookie character!

Still, if anyone is looking for alternative characters for the game, AAN has some great Infinity conversions on his site and I have a few in progress too!

If you look at the Star Wars link AAN posted you will see the Sith Apprentice as well as the two bounty hunters at the bottom of the page. Here's one of mine although I think the matte varnish is still a bit wet hence the shinyness.

@AAN Have you experimented with different techniques for lightsabers? I have been trying a white base with a few layers of matte varnish, followed by a little dayglow pigment and some gloss varnish.. but the results so far have been inconsistent.

Honestly my Lightsabres are not really good. IMO a solid light source painting styles would fit them best, but somehow I can't get myself into doing for them.

And some of the mentioned conversion pics:

This model is inspired by some of the Sith dresses used in the SW-TOR online game. The mini is an Infinty Reverend Moira, left arm is from a YuJing Zhanshi Hacker and the Lightsword is just a plastic rod.

The Droid is from Pig Iron, both Bounty Hunters are Infinity (Pan O) models with head swap. IIRC the female head is a Hasslefree one, while the Gran is from a soft plastic SW mini.

Some awesome conversions there! Great idea with the Reverend Moira for the Jedi, I think she works perfectly.

Many thanks for posting pics of the finished miniatures, they certainly look like good enough sculpts to make a decent effort with!

Although I agree, I think everyone would love to see some really high-quality resin or metal sculpts of a lot of these concepts. Perhaps with the new movies on the way this year that's a possibility?

Heavy Storm Trooper - head from FFGs Imperial Assault, body by Dreamforge

I really like the old look of the Heavy Troopers, very fitting for the Old Republic era IMO.

FFGs Imperial Assault minis with two conversions based on Dreamforge minis.

Very nice job, think he actually looks better than the original!

In the 2nd photo, is the guy on the left (pointing) also a conversion?

Sir, you have done what hundreds of promo photos could not: sold me on the Dreamforge minis.

The galaxy is littered with the single-planet graveyards of civilisations which made the economically sensible decision not to explore space.

The single pose of the Troopers annoyed me a bit, since the material is easy to work with I started a conversion.
I cut off the helmet and calves and repositioned the head and lower legs a bit, result is shown on the left mini below.
In the end it was - IMO - not really worth it. Looks still too similar.

I also painted the lower part of the mini more white on this mini, since some people seemed to be irritated by a slightly dirty Storm Trooper - shock, gasp!

Below both Troopers are shown together with the Vader miniature.

First player miniature, the mighty and equally fierce Wookie warrior Gaarkhan... Very easy to paint mini, basically just a wash and a bit dry brushing.

This model is again inspired by some of the Sith dresses used in the SWTOR online game and Darth Nihilus. I pledged in the Wrath of Kings KS, the Nasier faction was yelling Old Republic Sith to me. Consequently I converted my first WoK mini into a SW mini...

The mini is based on the Wrath of Kings Alenya Heska (Nasier faction) miniature. A very simple conversion: I did not added the forehead horn and filled the tiny holes with greenstuff, replaced the swords, bended the robe a bit up and back to have the light sabres not contacting the robe. The sabres are just plastic rods.

Since it is a CMoN model, I also uploaded it at CMoN: http://www.coolminiornot.com/379686
If you like her, drop a nice vote there for me...
