Hey folks,
Well, my Mhorgoth Rising starter set has arrived! Just adding up what's in the box (points wise) so I can try and get it as even as possible. The basic Undead are 345pts , Dwarfs 380pts.
I'm building up the Undead a bit by giving the Skellies Spears (15pts) for the juicy Phalanx bonus. I was also thinking of giving them the Pipes of Terror (15pts), as it seems a bit fluffy and brings them up to 375pts.
That should give me a few decent games, with just enough in the way of special rules to keep them interesting.
Any thoughts on this?

Sounds good.
Don't forget the giant skeletal rats (or are they dogs?). Boosting the amount of wounds that you recover from inflicting casualties is nothing to be sneezed at.
I forget what I went with for magic artifacts - I already had a whole lot of figures from Warhammer, so I had plenty of options.
That said, I really like the Mantic undead - and my army has been switching to all Mantic with glacial swiftness. (Time... is not my friend.)

Yes, the giant skeletal dogs (or are they rats?!) sound fun, as do the Throwing Mastiffs!
Good to see so many options available straight from the off. I admit that I thought KoW might be a bit too stripped back., but even just the free PDF rule has a bit depth.
Agreed, the Undead look great (mostly), though I will likely buy GW Grave Guard for Revenants. I like the Dwarf range too, especially their special character types.
Thanks also for the reply to the other thread, regarding the scenario at WGV. I'll get that this afternoon!

The one issue with all of Mantic's Undead starter stuff is the lack of character support. The Nerve rerolls that some characters supply are a powerful tool for any army, but Undead benefit to a greater degree as their natural ability to heal damage can be negated by a single unlucky Nerve roll early on.
In addition, some characters in the faction can use the Dark Surge spell which is an incredible ability.
So to that end, I would recommend using whatever bits seem appropriate on the sprue to make at least a single Revenant King to start off with (maybe make up some sort of Dwarf hero as well, but I'm not familiar with what's on those sprues).
Otherwise I think the Undead will be at a bit of a disadvantage, even at otherwise equivalent points values.

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.” |

Cheers Rick.
I'm looking forward to seeing just what I can make out of the jam packed sprues.
The PDF covers Musicians and banners, but doesn't mention anything about how champions affect your unit. DO you get +1 attack for a champ, or a re-roll to hit?!

I believe champions just look pretty and don't have any actual impact rules wise. Fluff wise they lead the unit and carry most of the magic equipment.

You are supposed to have a single model in the centre of the front rank to represent the champion. The only rules interaction he gets is that Line of Sight is currently drawn from him. No idea if this will change in the new edition when it hits as LoS is an area being looked at.
I suppose that you could imagine him carrying whatever magic item a unit is equipped with, but in game terms he's just a pair of eyes.

Ah yes, thanks chaps!
Well, I opened the box and cried a bit at all the clipping and gluing I have in front of me.
And the cried a bit more because I started thinking about extra units I might want. For both armies.
I may start a plog, or just go insane. Not sure yet.
