After I dug up my Lord of the Rings models (to sell them off) eh finish my White Hand army I fell in love with the beautiful Harad minis...

Its just a start and im a skirmish player as im not tactical savvy enough for big units and manouvers and stuff...

The lying camel is from Perry-miniatures im builiding Mahud next and im gonna use the unmounted ones as scenery and maybe making mounted versions of Abrakhan Guard (there is an entry for Abrakhan Riders) or mounted Watchers of Karna (no stats but i really like the idea)...

I got a mumak mahud a bunch of footies and 4 raiders coming in and The Golden King... wow im so excited

Ooh very nice i must say! I do have a soft spot for Harad models, and i am very jealous of those metals! Looking forward to seeing more with those camels, and those cactus' look top notch!

Any ideas on colour schemes? Or just going to stick with an original one?

And to the OP - the figures look great - where did you get the cacti models? I'm tempted to steal your basing idea for myself.

In my mind they look like they belong in the desert... desert equals cacti... so that is as much thought as i put into it...

On the colours... i do have a softspot for Lovecraft besides Tolkien so in my mind I could also use most of these as evil "egypty" cultists of Hastur/King in yellow... so i was planning on either using a lot of yellow which I hate to paint or atleast give them "yellow signs"...

Thanks for all the nice replies... alot of stuff I traded is still soaking in bluewonder to get paint and glue off... as soon as i got some more stuff to show ill be back!

To the OP, nice work and I'm sure JRRT would not be outraged.

As to the rest of us?

I am personally immensely amused by hobbits as such, and can contemplate them eating and making their rather fatuous remarks indefinitely; but I find that is not the case with even my most devoted fans.

I'll just asume everybody means well... In all honestly i bought the cacti for my Cowboys and Indians but I thought just sand would look boring.

Thanks for all the nice feedback. I prefer the perry camels as they are really cheap. just 8 pound for 3 running and the same for 4 resting ones... they are almost identical to the gw ones and im planning on converting some gw lotr models to either mount them or lead them on leashes. Sorry for the crappy English im not a native speaker and kinda sleepy...

The Perry Camels are pretty nice.

It is a pity that research in the 1980's showed that the Beduoins, Arabs and Persians did not really use camels in large numbers, as has previously been thought, or we would be awash in Camelry miniatures, as we once were in the 1970's.

Don't they (Perry Miniatures) make some Sudanese Camel riders with swords?

They would match the Later Haradrim the Perrys did for GW, since they were sculpted around the same time.

As for the Cactus. I understand the use of them, and as I said before, I doubt anyone will realize that they are an out of place item.

They do look OK for the miniatures.

I just did not know how faithful you might be to either sources for Middle-earth (Seeing as Jackson's Middle-earth has very little connection with Tolkiens), and taxonomy (classification of life) isn't something a lot of people consider regarding Middle-earth, and why Tolkien created the world as it is. So... I just pointed that out to see if it made any difference to you (apparently less than others).

This is all that the Perrys have available as far as Camels go (unless you want figures armed with rifles, which might not be canon, strictly speaking).

They are quite nice though, as you'd expect from the Perry Twins.

Might need a little work to make them look a little more LotR-y, but Warlord have some Romans on camels:

Spoiler:

Sadly just the 3 sculpts.

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

3 Camels is basically all that GW offers as well (or do they have four?).

They might have four, but I might have blocked one of them out of my mind because it has a blowgun (which the Haradrim didn't use).

It would probably not be too difficult to mix the GW and Perry Camels, as they are both made by the same person(s).

And it wouldn't be too difficult to remove the Rifle from one of the Beja Madhists (the one with the rifle resting on the camel) and add a spear, if you want a fourth camel.

Between the Perry and Warlord Camels you've got 6 different figures. A little conversion and you can have several unique units without much difficulty at all - and then even more if you bother to hunt down and pay the asking price for the GW ones.

I believe the Perry figures come in their predetermined sets of three, so while that one figure might be an easy conversion, you could end up with 2 unusable models unless you can sort something out.

I would stil go with the Old Glory Camels over the Warlord.

The Old Goory Camels are more similar to the Perry's, and they are of the same subject (Sudanese Madhists).

And there are like six or seven poses of the Old Glory figures.

Old Glory?

Supply and availability is also an issue, depending on where in the world you are located. For me - and outside the US in general, OG stuff is difficult and expensive. Conversely, Warlord is easily sourced. Perry is tricky (well, easy but expensive), and GW is pretty much via eBay. When/if I get around to doing camel riders, mine would most likely be exclusively Warlord, since they're reasonably priced, look good, and involve jumping through no painful hoops as they're very easy to get hold of. Not to mention that I can also use them in my Roman forces.

True....

Old Glory are a bit difficult to get outside the USA.

And being able to make multiple use of them would be a selling point.

But... As it should be clear by now, I tend to be unusually uptight about faithfulness to the Author, and the Beja would be closer to his depictions of Harad (anything Latin or French would be anathema to Middle-earth - but that raises complex issues of exegesis).

The Warlord stuff is beautiful... But it would stand out next to the Perry's stuff, being slightly larger and bulkier.

But if source availability is an issue, then you have to do what you do.

I'd buy stuff direct from the Perrys (and quite a bit, no doubt) if only they moved to a 21st century model of online sales (Like Warlord or any number of UK retailers) rather than being stuck in the 1980s model of "add 25% for postage".

So instead I'm only able/willing to buy a much more limited range of their product from various retailers (including Warlord, amusingly enough).

Hi im about to move so little time for painting... i do love the perry camels they are a perfect match... the riders i have are pretty smal so i wont use them. Im thinking of converting watchers or abrakhans to ride them mainly because it ll look cool. There are 3 different camels running 2 lying down. The british ride the same only sadels are a bit different (i asked Perry's). I do like the mounted king and naker but im broke so they have to wait...
