Blood-Drenched Death Company Marine

Over the last couple of years I have been painting the odd Deathwatch marine here and there when I want to do something different to my DIY Chapter. Having just completed another I figured it was time to get the finished work its own thread. Here's the newby:

Here's a 5 man kill team I did last Summer/early Autumn:

Blood Angel

Salamander

Raven Guard

Silver Skull

Minotaur

These next couple, both Sons of Dorn, are older, the Black Templar much more so than the Crimson Fist, hence his scheme is quite different to the others (as well as being a little untidier - my painting's come on some since doing him).

Crimson Fist:

Black Templar:

Well, thanks for looking. Hope you enjoyed what you saw.

Thanks man, I do have a group shot of the Kill Team:

Reckon I'll do another when the next two marines give me a second 5 man squad.

These are all great, but I especially like the minotaur and blood-angel running poses! Very dynamic/intimidating + realistic looking!

adirangan - thanks a lot, I do try and pose my models realistically, so I'm stoked that's something you've picked up on.

Rippy - cheers, I wanted them to have individuality beyond just their shoulder pads. Plus I figure that most of them serve while wearing the same armour they showed up in and that while away from their parent Chapter they'll carry more little trinkets and things to maintain their connection.

Why do some have the arm painted and some just the shoulder pad? Well painted, but far too many colours for me on deathwatch

Black, silver and red other than shoulder pads is too many colors?

The shoulder pad bit is an unfortunate aspect of the deathwatch that takes away from them imo. Ignoring that, theres the fact that the lenses are different colours, there's greens, blues, different shades of red, different shades of brown, golds and parchment. It serves to make the models too noisy

The armour was only repainted; changing the colour of their lenses would require replacing them, which I don't think the Deathwatch does.

Ha, I hadn't even noticed I'd done that to be honest. My DIY chapter have vlack and white armour so it's probably just a bit of autopilot taking over on occasion. To be fair it's only 2 out 8, I'll just have to try and remember better in future. It probably doesn't help for consistency that I tend to do them one or two at a time with fairly large gaps in between. That's probably also why they might be a bit colourful for your taste, I take them up when I want to do something a bit different and experiment with some colours I don't use on my DIY.

That said regarding the lenses see Dark Soldier's response:

plus I try to inject a lot of the flavour of the Chapter (as I see it) into each member, the colour of the lenses is a part of that along with the other details.

I'm not really sure what you mean about the different reds. It's the same colour for the weapons and purity seal wax on all of them except the Templar (who's something of an outlier anyway being the very first one I did). Where the red does differ, mainly the Blood Angel, but also on the Crimson Fist and Minotaur to an extent, it's only on the Chapter specific stuff. While there are different shades of brown on various pouches and holsters, I'd hardly think any of them could be considered noisy as the vast majority are very dark and quite drab.

Obviously as the creator I'm very much in favour of my own colour choices, but I do appreciate hearing other views, even if they don't agree with mine, so thanks for stopping by and commenting.

These really look fantastic! I've thought about painting some up to use as Sternguard. This might push me into actually doing it.

Take another look, man. They're subtle on some parts (like a very dark grey on the armour), but highlights are there on everything.

I can see some highlights, but a lot of areas are really lacking in shades and more extreme highlights, which makes a crisp paint job "flat" looking.

Definitely not bad painting at all, but I think you'll get more life out of each model if some additional shading, gradients and some further highlights.

So awesome! I really want to make my own, as I had planned... But my plans was stumped when I realised how tough it is to get the Deathwatch Pauldrons. What do you use for them?

This thread is filled with so much win. Love how no marine looks the same, all of them feel unique.

I really like the latest one, it's so cool to see marines from "smaller" chapters!

Thank you. It is tricky, I use the plastic pad from the Space Marine Command Squad set and buy it up whenever I see it on a bits site or ebay store. However, I have been getting into press moulding recently so I can use cool decorations from models without cutting them off and have been thinking about trying to replicate the shoulder pad that way. So long as you do that for your own personal use and do not sell them, then it's ok.

Thanks a lot, yeah I really wanted them to have the character of their parent chapter rather than just being black marines with different shoulder pads. I love 'smaller' chapters, too. I want to do lots of them, but the options are somewhat limited as my freehand is only ok rather than good so it does not match the detail of sculpted pads. That said I've got pads sorted out for a Novamarine, a Mortifactor a Red Scorpion, a Hawk Lord and an Angel Porphyr so there will be more lesser known chapters in the future!

Yeah, now I just need to be able to press them... I guess I'll go for them on bit-sites, then.

They are excellent. I've always had a fondness for the deathwatch and you are very much adding to that! The painting is awesome and I personally love the individuality and dynamic way in which you've posed each marine. Keeping chapter traits but while clearly showing their deathwatch tour is great.

"Trust in the Emperor at the hour of battle.
Trust to him to intercede, and protect his warriors true as they deal death on alien soil.
Turn their seas to red with the blood of their slain.
Crush their hopes, their dreams
And turn their songs into cries of lamentation."

Another marine begins his service. Things could get interesting in the field given his parent chapter and that of the previous recruit...

HighMarshall - thanks for the kind words, I do try to keep posing realistic and dynamic as I cannot stand awkwardly or bizarrely posed models so it's nice you've picked up on that.

AMAZING! The only thing is that the eyes on the newest grav-gun model are not done, not that big a deal in my books, but because you seem like such a good painter that it won't be a problem, and would really make the black scheme that much more fabulous

Thank you. Yeah, I missed them, got a bit confused. You see, my DIY Chapter has black and white armour and black lenses for their helmets, so I guess I kind of went on autopilot and skipped doing them another colour. Now it's highlighted and glued in it's a bit late to make the fix unfortunately. I could probably do the right lens, but the left one is quite inaccessible yet still very visible an I don't want him with one black lens and one coloured one.

I really love these models. They are simple and classy - and really stand out in my opinion. I have thought about doing some Deathwatch/killteam, and I think your models have inspired me to finally look into it. Any chance you can pm me some of the sets you kitbashed for parts? Thanks!

In all the fluff I have read about the Deathwatch the armor is no painted solid black. A large majority of it is. The is still some plates that keep the color of the parent chapter. The reasons for this is if they paint the armor solid black the machine spirit may end up feeling dishonored and rebel against the wielder.
