As my luck would have it I've been thinking of working on a few more fantasy projects of late - just as the Warhammer world as we know it has ended! Convenient it is not!
Anyway, late last year I decided I would work on a couple of stand alone characters representing some of the different races of the Warhammer world. Mainly Chaos, Empire, Elves and Orcs was what I had in mind. The instigating idea for all of this was a chaos lord conversion I had, had in mind for a while based on the fantastic plastic chaos lord figure. Of course, never being one to take the easy route, I wanted to convert him up to make him unique and try and capture more of the Chaos Lord look from
GW's terrific art work. The following shows some of the progress in developing this first figure:
I hadn't originally intended to make him devoted to Khorne, but, as is often the case when working on a conversion, I decided to abandon the helmet head I had been working on for a bare head and the one pictured just worked. The plan was to have him standing on a staircase in a ruined Empire city (this was always the plan, even before the End Times begun - again, convenient!), a collection of freshly severed heads in hand.
From there, a lot of cutting, sculpting and filling got me to this:
I wanted him to have an axe rather than the spear from the stock chaos lord model - it was more fitting for Khorne and, again, more unique. After this point, I started working on a cape, using the plastic figure's one as a base, but with significant work to do to make it fit on the new upper body:
With the base work on the figure done, it was then a case of adding all the micro-details and working on his scenic base to convey the image I had in mind. More pics highlighting the micro-details added at this stage are
up on my blog.
Overall I was very happy with how he'd turned out thus far. I think the base gives a nice frame to him without being too much or too big.
Now, to bring us fully up to date on where I am at with him - I have recently started painting:
The pic isn't the best (just taken with my phone under painting light), but it's not terrible either!
So far I've just been working on the red on the body and axe arm (not shown) and the face. The red has only really been shaded and a couple of first stage highlights here and there (more just testing/sketching at this stage) so is only about 50% done. The face is also only about half done, but I'll be waiting until I've finished more of the figure before going back in to adjust lighting direction and add more tones. Incase you are wondering, I am using Scale75 paints on this figure. These are without doubt my new favourite paint range (for reasons why,
check out the my review of the full Scale75 paint range on my blog).
Next up I think I will start working on the metal banding and the fur before finishing up the reds. Hopefully some progress to show on this over the weekend.
As always, feel free to let me know what you think!
Cheers,
Dante
