Just looked on the website and saw these two new kits that have come out and thought I should post it up and see/hear people's views on them.
So what does the dakkadakka community think of the the two pieces: the pipes and the Plasma Obliterator?

They're both cool IMO. The pipes might be overpriced (?) but it's hard to tell without actually seeing the part, and it's usefulness on terrain. It might look great on cities of death.
Plasma Obliterator looks genuinely useful and cool

The pipes are ridicuously overpriced for a bunch of tubes with skulls and spikes tacked on. And the rules are way beyond stupid.
The plasma turret looks nice at a first glance, although suffers somewhat from just looking like a scaled-up plasma pistol. The apparent inability to point it at ground targets is a little awkward, given its height.

Bit meh for me, Im firmly in the "more xenos terrain" camp so these dont add anything to the party for me. The pipes are a no just because - they're pipes. The plasma thing is pretty cool but its over priced.

Rules wise though a st7 ap2 massive blast on a av14 all round 3hp platform has extreme potential to intimidate meq opponents, shove a void shield on it as well and I'd be very worried facing it with my jp heavy BA. Also fantastic at cutting down artillery numbers. Gak against any non light vehicles though.
Why on earth does it have a transport capacity and no viewports though, I'll never fathom... unless of course you use it instead ofa bunker for the 20man escape hatch slingshot, although I'm not exactly sure if a massive blast st7 ap2 template sincs all that well with a large closing blob. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also - the rules on promethian pipes haven't changed a jot from what I've seen. Automatically Appended Next Post: Just realised - the plasma oblitorator requires a unit inside to shoot it.

Unfortunately, that's been a problem with GW for a long time. They design their models to look cool above all else. Actual gameplay functionality comes in at the bottom of the list of design priorities. Kind of like the Necron Obelisk. If it had been designed by someone who actually cared about functional designs (like, say, Mark Mondragon of DFG), the Tesla Spheres on it would be actual, rotating spheres.

The pipes, you could make for a LOT less $ using small pvc pipe and it would look just as good.
The usefuness of the pipes......I'm thinking not very unless you tailored your army to carry a huge buttload of flamers and you were playing against a horde assault army. but even then, it could still be countered....
The guntower... the gun itself looks kinda silly but beyond that, looks good.
It's usefullness... The gun has crazy stats but overall, I think overprived in points.

The pipes are ok, if you have a look they are designed to fit into the city of death scenery very nicely, which is a nice attempt to make them worth it but other than that they are over priced and if you aren't using it with the GW city scenery I wouldn't consider buying it.
The Plasma Obliterator I had to get as it would be cool centre piece for my Black Templar army (they are all footslogging) so for when they're on my shelves they look good and for my last stand scenario I created. It has crazy stats for its gun, may be a bit over priced but with the massive blast str 7 ap 2 I think it is worth it and AV 14 all round is nice (so it can survive 1 round). I will be mostly using as a distraction than anything else by getting the opponent fixated on it's stats for the gun.

I will most likely have a scout squad in with no upgrades, 55pts and with the massive blast their BS 3 won't big a huge problem and if it does I'll just put a veteran upgrade on the sergeant so I can get BS 4. This will make them cheap for their one purpose and if the building gets destroyed they can at least go and get an objective and with the low cost it won't be too much of a lost.

I've been promised one from my FLGS if they get even 1 allocated, but they have a dozen preordered -- way, way more than they'll be shipped (which they won't find out til early next week). I'm actually pretty surprised that this is so popular.

I've been thinking maybe an inqisitor for 25pts and bs4 may be the best way forward. Although he won't be as effective as scouts at getting an objective if the obliterator goes bang. Automatically Appended Next Post: Then there's always 12pt unit of acolytes - but you have to get an inquisitor to get these anyway.

I am too. Still, makes scouts in it seem more valuable since you can just have the sergeant fire, so it's just a 55 point unit for the thing, and they're reasonably safe

It would be awesome in a deamon army with a cheap herald inside. Although the gets hot roll would be an issue even with the 5++. Power armoured models would fare better against this.
But if you have a plasma obliterator and the units you are closing on the opponent with are multiwound MCs and soul grinders, you can shoot away with out too much worry.
Telion may be a good shout too. As would many eldar/DE characters.
If an opponent leaves an invis unit too close to one of their other models the massive blast could really screw them up...
Quite a lot of potential im seeing here.

By itself, I thought the Plasma Obliterator looked a bit daft. However, mounted atop the Aquila Strongpoint, I thought it looked a bit more impressive. Of course, that does increase its price tag quite a bit.

Pipes are cool (if over priced).
The Plasma tower is cool and would be a nightmare for anyone on foot or light vehicles
Although I think its dumb it has Gets Hot when its attached to a giant bunker structure. You would think it would have a better cooling system than vehicle mounted plasma weapons or super sized titan plasma weapons.
I suppose I could park a Tech Priest near or inside the thing but "Gets Hot" on such a large device is kinda dumb.

Dam thats nasty!
I may put instead a none upgraded 5 man crusade squad in for the 3+ save and if I lose one guy I won't drop to BS 3 and it should cost roughly 15pts more than the scouts, which with this new info will be a much worth while investment for the extra survivability.

There are lots of fortification kits, but with only a Basilica Administratum, Sanctum Imperialis and Manufactorum Building to defend, what's the point in building them. It's not like there's a city of any size to defend.
Personally, I'd rather see cheaper building kits for habitats and offices and so on (more variety! Or maybe a generic kit that allows you to easily mod what you want) to actually build a city.
I'd also like to see some Alien structures such as the following:
Aegis Defence Line for other races
Necron Obelisk (Rules as Bastion)
Tau Firebase (Rules as bastion)
Eldar / Dark Eldar Webway Portal (Homing beacon and maybe has invisibility rule for itself)
Ork Fortress (Similar rules to Aquilla Strongpoint or Fortress of Redemption)
These are just a few ideas - surely some of them are more interesting and varied than some pipes and a big plasma cannon on an even bigger pyramid of skulls?
