Would it make more sense to equip the terminator librarium with cyclones if you mainly use the Fury of the ancients for your librarians psychic power?

Does using FotA affect how you target with the rest of the squad, specifically the cyclones?

For instance, the librarian targets one edge of the board for the FotA, Does the rest of the librarium have to target the same thing? Or the first squad that FotA passes through?

Could someone clear up how FotA interacts with the rest of the retinue please?

FotA does not target a unit, hence the rest of the squad is not in violation if it targets a unit that FotA did not hit. Only one unit as been targeted, although multiple units may have been hit.

Thanks blue loki, I thought I missed something horribly obvious in there somewhere.

But my original question still stands. is it a better use of the librarium to equip them with cyclones if the librarian just hangs back and FotA's all day long?

If you are determined to field a static Librarium squad, then yes, I would give em Cyclones.

Personally, if he is just going to stand back and *fffwap!* all day with FotA, then I'd not give him a squad at all. Let him lounge in the safety of IC shooting immunity.

And, of course, if the squad is going to be mobile, give 'em Assault Cannons.

I'd agree with Blue Loki. Not that I'm against Cyclones (I field a unit with two and tank-hunter at 1500 and 1850 myself), but I don't think it's the most cost-effective choice.

Then again, if you're just taking a codicier with FOTA, and you want to give him a cmd. squad, and he's just going to hang back, Cyclones aren't the WORST idea ever. I just think you're going to find you'll want those asscans.

I guess my question is: Do you want to give him cyclones for the range and to leave him static, or to minimize the number of asscans in the army? Because if it's the latter, I'd as soon take a crusader with 7 assault termies and a chaplain, or a couple of LC/ML dreads.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

Wow. I never hang back with my command squad. On the contrary, I get them as "In-Your-Face" as I can to my opponent. Marine characters are built for hand to hand and the librarian is no exception. In a squad with Furious charge and might of heros as the second power, it's an assault monstrosity.

It may sound odd, but my command squad is my throwaway unit. My troop squads are 6 man and primarily used for scoring, so keeping casualties off of them is essential. I take a lot more risks with the command squad, and it doesn't always pay off. But the constant pressure keeps the other guy off balance.

Sure, I don't always get as many hits with Fury, but fury isn't the main reason for taking the Librarian anyways, in my opinion. Simply put, the other HQ choices just don't contribute enough to a DW army. The chaplain is too focused on assault, and Fearlessness does little for Stubborn terminators. Only practical reason for using a chaplain is if you need a cheap HQ; Reclusiarch can't be beat.

Likewise with the Commander. Deathwing don't need the leadership boost, so the only reason to take him is the sword of secrets, although the lower tier commander can be bought pretty cheaply.

That leaves the Librarian, and his uses are limitless. Psychic Hood, Force Weapon and powers that give you abilites you can't get elsewhere in the list. Fury is the obvious choice for one simple reason: Librarian's don't need shooting weapons, and Fury is the same cost as a storm bolter anyways.

Blue Loki has it right. If that's all you're going to use the Librarian for, then great. Personally I think it's a huge huge waste of a great character. Plus, the command squad is one of the cheaper ways to get assault cannons into the list.

Finally, Cyclones are, sadly, almost always a bad idea, especially if you're hanging back. Even if you take a minimum squad of terminators for the librarian and give them cyclones, you're wasting no less than 90 points worth of models. If you want 48" range firepower with Deathwing, take TLLC/ML Dreads. Keep the terminators and the Librarian out on the sharp end, where they belong.
