KADDAR NOVAE

Thanks to our backers, 1x Kaddar Nova is now included in every single boxed set at The Maelstrom Rises level and above. Thanks ever so much for your ongoing support, and here's to meeting the next stretch goal! The model is about 90% completed and has two head options, two leg pose choices and four arm options. Pictures will be shared as soon as the model is done and professionally painted.

Kaddar Novae are amongst the most revered priests in the Karist Enclave, and certainly the most feared amongst its enemies. Whilst the Karists regularly perform communion ceremonies with dilute na-cybel energy to experience some of the transcendent feelings they associate with ascension at the hands of the Maelstrom, the Kaddar Nova takes this to the extreme. Exposing themselves to stronger cybel energy more frequently, a Kaddar Nova’s body is ravaged by the radiation given off by the reaction of the cybel energy with matter, but the visions and power they receive in return are deemed worthy of the risk to their physical form.

This ability derives from the cybel-powered shield reactor pack that each Kaddar Nova wears on their back into battle. While an amazing example of Karist technology, it is also undeniably a curse. While a Kaddar Nova builds up an extreme tolerance to cybel exposure over the course of their time in the Enclave, not even they can withstand being in close proximity to such a powerful cybel reactor forever. A Kaddar Nova willingly accepts the burden of carrying this powerful battlefield tool, knowing that eventually it will poison them.

This cybel reactor powers a unique kinetic energy projector, highly coveted technology mastered by the Enclave through intense study of the innate abilities of the aliens known as Angels. This projector provides a Kaddar Nova with a variety of benefits: a protective energy shield to deflect incoming fire, the ability to fire blasts of kinetic energy using a Gauntlet on their arm, and it allows them to move preternaturally quickly, despite the ravages the reactor has inflicted upon their body.

On the tabletop, each faction in Maelstrom’s Edge has a few units/special abilities that provide an additional level of tactical choice unique to that faction. While the Epirian Foundation has their Bot Handlers, who can jack into specific drone units to temporarily improve their abilities as needed, the Karist Enclave has a handful of units that have the ability to choose a different mode/form, with the Kaddar Nova being one of these.

Each turn, when activating a Kaddar Nova, you get to choose the mode of their reactor pack, with that choice lasting until they next activate:

  • Kinetic Boost: The reactor funnels power to Kinetic boosters on the pack itself, allowing the Kaddar Nova to move unnaturally quickly. The Kaddar Nova’s Movement and Evasion characteristics are doubled.

  • Shield Mode: All power is diverted to the pack’s protective field. The Kaddar Nova’s Armor Value characteristic is doubled and their Field ability is greatly improved.

  • Gauntlet Overload: The Kaddar Nova can fire their Kinetic Gauntlet weapon using a special Overload weapon profile. Not only is this attack incredibly deadly to its target, all units within 18” of the Kaddar Nova’s front arc (friend and foe!) gain additional suppression as they are knocked back by this powerful blast.

  • Beyond all those fun choices granted by their reactor pack, the presence of a Kaddar Nova on the battlefield is also an important spiritual reminder to the Karist forces. Kaddar Novae are the living embodiment of the Karist teachings, willing to selflessly take on the pain and physical degradation caused by their own reactor packs to promote the Karist way. Karist units within 12” of a Kaddar Nova therefore have the Stoic ability, which means they are able to endure more suppression than normal before being forced to retreat.

As a final act of dedication to their cause, in desperate times a Kaddar Nova can even use their shield reactor pack as a literal weapon, setting it to detonate in a powerful explosion of cybel energy. Most Karists believe that someone strong enough in the faith who perishes outside the Maelstrom can still ascend when their body is eventually consumed by it, but the likelihood of ascension is greatly diminished the more damaged or decomposed that body becomes. A Kaddar Nova that obliterates their own body via their shield reactor pack is therefore making the ultimate sacrifice. Many Karists believe that the years of belief and preparation the Kaddar Novae have made still allows them to ascend when the Maelstrom finally reaches the molecules that once housed their physical being.

When a Kaddar Nova detonates his shield reactor pack on the table, as long as at least one enemy model is removed as a casualty due to it, all friendly Karist units gain the Stoic ability for the remainder of the game, and the Karist player gains +1 Victory Point. However, losing a Kaddar Nova in any other way is a crippling blow to the Karists, and they lose 1 Victory Point should that occur.

As you can see, Kaddar Novae are an absolute linchpin both to the Karist faith, and also to their tabletop force. You can use their field to protect your valuable units, or look to use their Kinetic gauntlet to cause suppression on several enemy units at once. And when the situation is desperate, detonating their reactor pack can be the difference between victory or defeat!
