Embarking on the kind of painting project that nightmares are made of.
Goblins! An army of tiny, innumerable and mind cripplingly repetitive little blighters!
I need incentives.

Paint the bases white underneath and write little names on there. Gives a little character to the idea.

This is a great idea.
You could also have an army of "infiltrators." If you are doing Warhammer Fantasy, get a core box of each of the other armies and use bits to outfit your goblins. Each unit could be themed in this way. Otherwise, conversions from like product lines to make every goblin unique.
Edit: If this is too expensive, use paint schemes representative of other armies.

Keep it simple and just get stuck in. I highly recommend watching the clock while painting on the first dozen or two models to get a realistic idea of how long things take and figure out if there's areas you could speed up your painting. And good luck, last time I tried working on my Night Goblin army I got through about 40 Gobbos before giving up, I'll get back to them eventually

I have hundreds of Hithaeglir Goblins (old Ral Partha and newer Thunderbolt Mountain). Roughly 325 of them to be precise (150 Greater-Goblins, and 175 Lesser Goblins and Snaga).
Lots of painting, and lots of painting.
I work on a unit at a time.
Skin, then armor, then minor details and props (swords, belts, knives on belts, helmets, etc.).
This makes the progress seem to be quicker, since I reduce the "chunks" I am working on from "325 Goblin Miniatures" to "17 Units."
The process is called, no surprise, "Chunking" in the Cognitive Scientists, and is a method to help overcome the feeling of being overwhelmed by large numbers, or repetitive tasks.

This has never worked for me. It doesn't feel any faster or less overwhelming for me to spend half an hour painting one model and doing it 5 times than it does to paint 5 models in a batch take 2 and a half hours.
I only bother batch painting when it actually reduces the time it takes (things that require drying times or airbrushing which has the same set up time regardless of how many models I spray).

I like to go to my local gaming shop and paint. It gets me out of the house, helps me focus, and supplies are handy.

Found when doing O&G a couple of years back, and still find with 15mm WW2 models a simple trick seems to help with motivation.
paint the faces first - even if just the base colour with eyes and mouth darker.
You then have a group of models who will continue to watch you until they are finished.
Also I find having two different projects on the go helps break things up a bit (currently doing 15mm WW2 and 28mm Napolonic, have a 28mm elf army waiting the new rules).
Batch painting is faster, found batches of about ten models works reasonably well, enough you actually get through them without being so many you get sick of them.
When doing Bret infantry a while back went for groups of four (as the archers and M@A have four models each), and did half of two batches a night - the first half got base colours up to and including a wash, the second (done the night before) were then finished.
Picked colours carefully so I could use a decent sized brush for base colours, was completing four models an evening, doing something else on the weekend, soon got through a good few of them.

Start from A to Z, and then repeat once you've hit Z. See how many multiples of 26 you can hit.

this is the boy, he's 4 and he likes playing with daddy's toys. I figure if I'm going to teach him to paint minis a goblin army is about the perfect place to start.

To be honest I paint in huge batches.. I am doing 27 dire avengers at the moment... I can manage about 12 a week using this method:
1) make brushes do the work. Treat them like bic razors not gilettes!
Yes. I mean it. They are like £3 so do not treat them with respect like they are hallowed items. Do not squeeze every drop of life out of them. I have heard of people getting 2 years out of one. In my experience they get old after about 2 weeks. When I buy them I put a green dot on them. (Green traffic light) when they go "off" even a bit (after 20 minis usually) I can tell them are still good. Just not "good" good I put a yellow traffic light dot on them and use them for bases. Once they lose the "point" or tip I paimt a red dot on them for dry brushing only. Then when they are no good for even that I bin them. I have like 30 yellows and 3 greens atm. I have like 5 reds.
2) get a wet pallette.
Learn how to use one. Get one. They are a "big faff" that saves tonees of time.
3) spray as much as possible.
( i personally use the cans of spray gw sell.. air brushing is something I don't have intrest in .. but I can get minis half done by spraying then doing "part 4)"
4) ink them to death.
After spraying blast them with ink that belongs to the spray. i.e. I would undercoat white for gobbos then hit them with green spray then blast them in green ink. If you just then pick out the clothes in brown and weapons in silver ( and ink them ) it will already look ace from table top distance.

Thanks for all the suggestions folks. I've been chuncking away and have the first 40 almost done.(a perfectly acceptable feat of endurance AllSeeingSkink) Pics of those to follow someday. In the meantime here's a selection of characters that i previously painted just to give you an idea of where I started out.
I'll take some photos of the spears and archers soon. Then I may treat myself (as suggested by WarbossDakka) to something with a giant ass. Maybe even a Giant!
