How exactly are Eversor Assassins deployed and then pulled back off the field? It's never been touched on, and I'm having trouble imagining how

A: The Assassinorum manages to get an Eversor within killing distance of his target if he'll just kill everything he sees, no doubt providing warning

and more importantly

B: How on earth do they manage to retrieve him from the field once his mission is accomplished and he's still alive? Are they all just let loose to die, each assassin only good for 1 kill? That doesn't sound right. The Assassinorum has to have some way of getting them back.

This makes me wonder if the Eversors have the ability to calm down and actually behave themselves when they don't need to be crazy.

P.S. I have similar questions for Chaos Space Marine Warp Talons. It sounds like they don't have enough wherewithal to remember to return to their warband.

IIRC they either Teleport or get sent down in a special Drop Pod.

For recovery, they do get turned into frenzied killing machines with drugs. Its also logical that they might get retrieved with a drug that counteracts the Frenzone in their system. And actually I think that even in their frenzied state they are lucid. They just won't have great friend/enemy distinction, but they'd still be capable of following the extraction plan.

But Eversors are the most disposable of assassins. They get sent on what would normally be a suicide mission, and thats how they are meant to be used. A rabid beast to be pointed in the general direction of the target and let loose. Retrieval is probably always a secondary consideration.

Lucid enough to follow the extraction plan? That actually does make sense, imagining that as another part of the conditioning...

Not sure how I feel about the whole teleportation/drop pod idea, though.

I'd have to agree that recovering the Eversor is a secondary priority, but it is still an expensive killing machine. Seeing as it has drug injectors it's easy to see it also fitted with the right drugs to calm it down. And it has to be at least partly lucid even in it's drug-frenzied state, else it would just blindly kill every single thing that crosses it's path and possibly never reach the target before it escapes.

Eversors probably receive secondary orders telling them where to go after the goal is achieved. Orders telling them that the nice guy in a pilot's jumpsuit is a not-approved kill, and now please get in the shuttle and have some sleep.

Yup, this is pretty much my new canon. Probably the only canon, too...all things considered.

They use Drop Pods. The Assassin is kept in Cryo-stasis till a mission appears. The Assassin is then uploaded with the mission parameters and he is transferred to the Pod to deploy.

Citation needed. But I'm willing to assume that they're deployed by any means necessary. I even read a black library novel called Seventh Retribution in which the Imperial Fists crashed a Thunderhawk into a tower to make sure that the Eversor assassin (which was still in cryo until his pod was broken by the impact) reached his target.

Its from the Assassins BL books IIRC. Lexicanum hasn't gotten the citation in yet.

Read Nemesis if you want to get into the head of a Eversor. The short of it is, they are actually really lucid, they just don't differentiate between friend and foe. They can be kept awake without going on a murder spree if you sedate them.

On the other hand, I recall the story of an Eversor sent to inflict maximum damage on a traitor world. It's extraction ship was destroyed in orbit. As the mission was a secret, nobody knew to come collect him. Eventually some trader or such came to the planet and found the entire population had been killed over the course of a couple months.

I ain't got nothing to go on writing this, but I just thought I'd contribute by pointing out that Acro-Flagellants have one thing similar to the Eversor in that they are pumped full of combat drugs when engaged, and can only be recovered (yes they do get recovered if they survive a battle) thanks to the Pacifier Helms they wear.

"A pacifier helm keeps the beast under control, but once unleashed, the Arco-flagellant will become a berserk killing machine, tearing through enemy warriors with brutal ferocity and a complete lack of regard for its own safety." (Acro-Flagellants. Games-Workshop Webstore. accessed 07/Jun/2015)

Codex Inquisition says:
"A pacifier helm projects soothing hymns and the images of saints into the Arco-Flagellant's brain to keep him sedated and under control until a trigger word is spoken. Once the word is given, the Arco-Flagellant's body is pumped full of combat drugs that heighten his senses, stoke his ferocity and numb the pain from his wounds."

and:
"Should an Arco-Flagellant survive combat a second word can be spoken, returning him instantly to a state of placid calm until the next time he must be set loose." (Codex: Inquisition. "Arco-Flagellants". 6th Edition. digital)

Besides, an Eversor must necessarily be able to function without being basically Kharn but able to obey commands to kill a target, since they technically can be elected the Master of the Assassinorum. As for if that ever happened is another case entirely.

Must've been a small planet for 1 man to kill the entire population

Anyways, if they're lucid then I suppose that opens up the potential for them to also become sedated. The question then becomes how would anyone manage to sedate them enough to get them back inside stasis?

I imagine the Eversor made up the body count by using attacks that would cause mass casualties. Hives would need some massive ventilation systems to keep breathable air flowing. Water sources would be critical. Explosives could collapse critical support columns to crush thousands beneath tons of rockcrete.

Some nerve gas here, a little explosive there, and boom you have millions dead by the hands of one individual.

As for sedation, if the Eversor is lucid he could probably self-administer a tranquilizer. Or it gets automatically triggered when extraction arrives.

Hokay, so I popped open Nemesis and flipped to where they recruited their Eversor, the 'Garantine.' There was a catastrophic breach in his pod's coolant line that killed his handlers. When a second set arrived, he awoke and killed them. The base command prioritized fixing the coolant as there were 9 other Eversors that might wake. During that time, the Garantine sought out and killed the command structure and all handlers. Turns out, Eversors are programmed with a phrase that will shut off their brain if spoken aloud.

Without that phrase, it took a Vindicare and Culexus to subdue him. They pumped him full of tranquilizer and fried his brain with an animus. Even then, the half naked Eversor almost killed them.

So, after all that they stuck him in a high gravity pit and pumped him full of anti-psychotics for a couple weeks. I'll remind you, he's lucid throughout this process, but he's been overpoweringly conditioned to leave no witnesses. That lucidity is exactly what gives him the urge to kill everyone, no exceptions.

Finally, purged of his combat stimulants, the Garantine is left as stable as a mass murderer in a high security prison. He was a mass murderer before he became an assassin; it's just his default state of mind.
