My table actually looks pretty funny when I play Blood Angels, as I'm in the process of replacing all my BA infantry (almost all of which are 15-25 years old). The funny thing is, the old models FIT on a 25mm base. Imagine putting one them onto a 32mm base, hahahaha.

Well stood up more, the oldest is hunched over, now stood taller.

But keep the old ones, there a classic model n add character :-)

I'm using my ancient beaky marines as sternguard. They are single piece models, and the weapons they are carrying don't look like anything in the current universe haha.

So as far as I'm concerned they are ancient combi grav variants.

I just want to see a comparison between the FW Abaddon and the GW version. That should also be a pretty good indication of scale changes.

By all that is unholy, RT Marines look terrible.

It's certainly a nice and interesting comparison.

From a technical point of view, RT marines clearly are not great models. That hunchback pose does the mini no favors either.

Still, I do believe he has some simplicity that deserves a bit of praise. Many current 40k models - as that new BA perfectly shows - are just too ornate for my taste.

In a sense, with all its flaws, the RT marine looks like a soldier on a battlefield, perhaps flinching momentarily at the sound of an artillery blast nearby. The guy next to him looks like someone doing cool poses on a military parade.

Well I never own any RT era Space Marine Minatures, but I did buy a few 2nd Edition Termies off ebay a while back, their scale difference is very obvious.

On the other hand, the RT marine's lame pose aside, I don't think the actual height of the models, should both of them hypothetically stand straight up, be a very significant one.

Firstly, the marine on the left is clearly hunched slightly, its legs are angled more drastically than the one on the right. And the RT marine's back is also far more inclined than the new one, so should it "stands" the same way as the one on the right, it would be much taller.

Secondly, the 32mm base is higher than the 28mm base. Having recently rebased all of my SW marines to 32mm base, I can say for certain it's a lot taller than a new tempestus scion model on a 28mm base, despite the fact that the scion's model is actually only comparably less short than a marine model not on a base. (and yes, the old stormtrooper models and the new Tempestor models are practically the same height, given a same pose.)

I'd say the change is mostly on the horizontal dimensions: wider pauldrons, chestplates, shin guards makes it look far larger than the RT marine.

Here is another snapshot of a few things that I have upstairs that highlight the difference in size. Chaos Cultists are actually taller than standing marines from RT/2nd Ed hahaha. Sorry for the squat, but ALL the plastic space marines from those boxes were in the squatting position. I'd give you a guy holding a bolter, but that's down in my game room and I'm lazy to go grab it to photograph

The green guy standing beside the DA fella out of Dark Vengeance is when I was into Salamanders. That's a heavy bolter strapped onto his back

Also, a current-day space marine is nearly the size of a RT/2e Terminator.



In case there is any doubt, here are the legs -- left is the RT legs, and the right is the 2015 devastator legs, the largest SM legs yet produced. Putting aside the obvious width difference, check how much taller it is.

The 32s are pretty tall, comparatively.

Those hunched over guys would make good Raven Guard, the kinda look like maybe they might be sneaking.

How do those dev legs stand up against the old ones? How big are dem boots?!

I should check how the old RTs compare with kneeling marines

The first boxed set of Mk VII marines produced around 89/90 I believe - add those to the line for comparison and you'll see the Marines growth started a lot earlier!

Oh, the '1994 termie' is actually a Grey Knight from 1990!
