I went for guard because I liked the idea of throwing people away into the grinder. Got cadian to start with and then later catachans to use as vets. Now I'm going for elysians because I like the ordos xenos and the elysia have a detachment that worked closely with them. Also because throwing sentinels out of airplanes is cool.
Is there a reason you don't post your reason, Daly? Just another fiire-and-forget thread?
Mine is the tanks.
I wanted to paint tanks like you see in the books, and the weathered and battered IG suit that well.
I don't choose regiments or schemes, to be able to avoid fluff-fights and choose to go off-piste with my lists.

Because I'll have the models when I finish my Tyrant's Legion. May as well flesh it out to a full army. I'll likely end up with a Mechanized Regiment. Sentinels, Chimeras and Malcadors are friggin cool, and Artillary types fit my Tyrant's Legion well so may as well go that route.
They'll undoubtably pull double duty as Renegades too, just like my Astral Claws pull double duty as Red Corsairs.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.
There was a battle report with Valhallan VS Tyranids in one of the first White Dwarf (Issue 48 I think, don't know which edition it was) and I immediatly fell in love with the cold-ass-guard-with-fur-coats-and-a-gun feel. Never played them though, never got the chance. But now I'll start that
Valkyrie and Sentinels and Tauros Scout Cars. Pretty much.

Oh. Solstice Lunar III. :p Didn't answer that bit 'cause it means nothing to you.

It was the basilisks that made it for me. And I really liked the sentinels for a few years.
And i play with the cadian models because they look 'good enough' and were the easiest to come by. I made my own regiment and homeworld though (mentioned in my signature)

I chose IG because of armoured regiments, unwavering bravery and military enthusiasm ! I like the idea of normal men fighting for Mankind survival, it's closer to what I personnally find grimdark.
I choose to create my own homebrew regiment, which is quite Modern Russian Mechanized Infantry in speeeesh. They have customized guns, MOLE vests and round SF helmets, and they are unquestionably ruthless!
Because feth GW uniformization and feth all-cadian artworks !!

This thread and thread creator seem strangely familiar...
I started IG because the first time I saw a game of 40K, I was at a convention where they had some massed tank and artillery battles. It looked really cool. As for the regiment I chose, I went with Steel Legion. I loved the fluff of the 3rd War for Armageddon, and the White Dwarfs that featured all of the batreps and stories were great fun to read at the time.
When I started playing 40K in 2nd Edition, there were three of us who all picked one of the Big Four SM chapters, I had Ultramarines, way back when they were in fourth place. So I built a little guard force to ally in. I thought Cadian had the "look" of a good Ultramar Defense Force. - though as I type this it FINALLY occurs to me, Valhallans, Polar Ice Fortresses. Duh.
My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

Vostroyans. Looks wise it's because fething Vostroyans are amazing. Gameplay wise it's because I love applying force multipliers to fifty guys.
"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

The gritty art style, variety of game-play style and the lore for any regiment. For steel legion, having a army of hive gangers in metal cages driving into battle with weapons ablaze and all but the most powerful weaponry causing damage to their iron steeds, it just makes it the game all worth it. But overall nothing is a better reason for to play guard than to see a infantry squad hold their ground and remain defiant against all odds (thanks to commisars). oh that and some of the best tanks in the whole of the warhammer universe (except the malcador)

Tanks and more tanks. Plus I like the idea of playing an army of basic humans who can stand up against genetically enchanced super soldiers fed power by eldritch horrors, aliens who are eons ahead on the evolutionary path, an unstoppable legion of the robotic damned and other monstrosities and win.
My force is a pastiche of the Western Front of the WW2. Wehrmacht themed tanks and heavy infantry and UK/Commowealth themed light infantry.

The whole normal guys with crap gear, standing up to the horrors of the universe. Surviving by out numbering the enemy(in some cases), out exploding the enemy, and out ballzing the enemy.
Besides, it's more awesome a tale of a lone guardsman/squad wrecking an enemy army, than it is to hear the same tale of a squad of space marines.
Also, I'm just a big fan of Humanity F Yeah!
Besides, there's a near infinite amount of stuff you could do with your own regiment, seeing how there's millions of worlds out there!
So yeah, I made my own regiment/world.

That and I was able to customize to my hearts intent.
My regiment is technically part of the Tech Guard (Skitarii, but I refer to them as Tech Guard due to well.. IG units), from my fluff planet.
Its complicated but Im happy. I get to strap all sorts of insane weapons to my tanks and go nuts. That and I get to build really really BIG tanks. Bigger than even Baneblades!

Every other army in this game are super-beings in their own way (except Tau who are just armed with superguns). So their successes are more or less expected.
But with Guard: No matter what, any success your guardsmen have are automatically heroic because it takes sheer blind-courage to stand up to the foes of the 40k universe.

The normalcy. Right now my principle IG force is centered heavily on Scions. They're serious customers as far as 40k goes but at the end of the day they still take R and R, experience the human condition, and be somewhat normal people while not jumping out of spaceships.
And I like that, especially in contrast to other armies. I can understand when they fail a morale test or when they get pinned, I can comprehend how they'd pass a dangerous terrain test. They're relateable in a game where most things are intended not to be.
And Valkyries

Cadians. I actually like the models GW produces for them. I like that they're just humans without all the superhuman extras. I prefer playing infantry and think Starship Troopers was a great movie.
