Breathtaking. Cant remember if i asked you, but you do predominantly use brushes?. Also do you just use medium and paint? or water aswell?

Thanks so much, wish i had your skills.

@Stormatious - Thanks for stopping in, historically I used brushes for everything till I did the tank push in 2014, after then the base armour colour was applied by airbrush. Everything else however is done by brushes using water as the thinning medium.

@Gits - Thanks mate.

@Cam - Cheers.

Update: So over a year after I started this push I finished, first up the remaining pics of the Castigator.

The gun:

Shoulder pads

Carapace

Body now done

Sword

Castigator done!

The Push is now done

Now for the review, I had some goals for 2018, I was making some good gains on them, infact I was on track to making all of them within the year! Then I broke my ankle and basically took a 6 month break while getting back to fighting fit, on to the Goals:
2018 goals:
1. Paint up the Nurgle models from the 8th Edition starter set
I had smashed this out very early on and was very happy with the quick and dirty look I gave them, perfect for table top
2. Convert and paint a Robute Guilliman model for my Grey Knight army
Very very happy with how the conversion came out and stoked with the paint job as well!
3. Interact more with folks here from Dakka, I've been very quick to look through blogs I'm subscribed to and not post my thoughts, I hope to change that this year.
I started out so well, then as soon as I broke my ankle I holed up and even towards the end of the year and this first part of this year I've remained in the hole and I don't know why.
4. Paint at least 1 more special Character for my Brothers Nid army
Smashed this out with the Nurgle models
5. If time permits, finish the last LoW the last remaining Cerastus Knight (not hopeful on this one)
So, I did have this listed as a green, but I had only completed it this year (2019) so it was completed but not in time

In 2018 I had painted, 51 models a drop from the previous year, but to be expected with a 6 month break.

Goals for this year, I'm not sure so open for some feedback here, I want to get through more models painted and maybe help my brother with some of his army, who knows.
The next push has the following models:
2 x Chapter Masters
5 x Bikers /w 2 Grav guns
5 x Sternguard
5 x Space Marines (for Devastators)
5 x Command Squad Marines
1 x Corvus Blackstar

Oh yeah the annual army shot, also a bit late

Must be nice to finish a big push like that, huh? The Castigator turned out great! I love seeing big army shots like that too; gives me inspiration to get more of my stuff done so I could maybe eventually post such a picture.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

@Zerg - Yeah finishing off all those models was great, seeing them all on the table was even better

@Nev - Thanks!

@Gits - Cheers

@Graven - All these models and all painted to my exacting standard!

Update: Another month gone, the new push is underway, I spent a LOT of time on magnets for the corvus blackstar, just check that out below:

Storage is a real thing when you have many models, the fliers are by far the worst for space taken up, I wanted to come up with a way it would 'break' down and store with the minimum of space, the first hurdle is the tail, I needed to magnetise that

This bit sits inside the tail section.

I messed up and didn't put magnets on the inside before I glued the body together, I got them in though.

The wings needed some creativity

All of them done

Lightening claw terminators

Group shot

Paint begins!

On to a command squad marine with a special weapon

Interesting thoughts on storing the flyer. Im curious on how to will look with all those magnets. Looks like you went big, so that should help.

Btw, i love the annual shot with everything. Very impressive and probably fun setting it up. How often do you find yourself criticizing your own earlier works?

@Ice -

@Graven -

Update: Another month gone by so quick. I continued with the last set of marines for my devastator squad.
Black lining

Then started on edge highlighting of the marines, got one done

before going strait onto the heads and back packs to get them completed

However I also took a small commission from my bother to paint some of his nids in his scheme for his birthday, so started assembly
Some stealers

and I have a helper with building! Made me so happy he has shown interest in what dad is doing.

@Ice - Not only stealers, but nids in general. My brothers scheme is very quick an easy meaning I can get through quite a bit.

@Graven - Yeah, he was super excited to be doing 'Dad' Stuff.

@Gits - All painters know that grind!

Update: Another month been and gone, I did a bunch of stuff in the past 30 days:

I worked on the marines, edge highlighting done

Red's whites etc also done

Bolters got a whip around

With the squad all finished up

Then worked on the Nids, I magnetized two Carnifexes

Primed all the gribblies

Went to work on half of them, with 4 genestealers and three ripper bases

Half the hormagaunts

Done

Half the Termagaunts

Spent a bit of time on the base colours on the Hive Tyrant

Then just this weekend had a 2 v 2 (Necrons/Tzeentch demons Vs Wolves/Astra) and wanted to trial 3 squads of destroyers, so on to the quick build was

We eeked out a 1 point win, so much death on the feild and had it gone to turn 7 we would have lost handily. Well thats all for now, check back next month!

I always imagined Tyranids to be a nightmare to magnetize because of the organic shapes of the parts, but is that actually true? Maybe the parts fit together easier and there's convenient places to put magnets? Just curious. The Marines look great as always!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):

@Graven - Yeah tell me about it, a full swam got smashed out as well as some other cool stuff!

@Zerg - I agree with them being a pain, I ended up with one hefty blister on my index finger from over use of the drill bit. Its healed up nice now, but it was touch and go there for a while

Update: So, things got painted, at a great rate of knots

So my Brother popped by to check up on the progress and brought with him two extra models for me to look at

He wanted them to be unique enough that they looked to fit in his army, but different enough they were individual, so I broke this down to trying two different washes

It was at this point I realised my biggest mistake, the old GW 'Washes' weren't washed, but more an Ink... Tzeentch save my soul I think I ruined a model... But I took this as a learning experience and figured I would layer paint on this one.

The other gets the classic dry brush option

Necrons got a touch of love as well, via a black wash

Followed by a silver drybrush, black layer and first layer red

Back to the Tyranids

The Hive Tyrant got all the love.
His weapons

Done

and equipped with weapon options

2 Carnifexes complete with magnets were next on the menu
The weapons

Cant forget some warriors!

Or the remaining gribblies

All in all a mighty looking swarm

With that all done, back to the marines

Also, great news, I'm heading to the USA tomorrow to the D23 convention in California will be there for 2 weeks, can't wait!

Wow, this is an impressive blog. I don't know if I have ever seen such a long blog working mostly on the same army for so long. I have only started to scratch the surface, but I am mightily impressed by the scale and quality of the army. I tip my hat to you.

I really like the look of your scouts from a few pages back. Interesting little kitbash and well painted.

Mighty mighty pic dump! Great job sir. I love the crons, they're very low-key, in a good way. At some point I might managed to do some, always had a notion to do a few as a terracotta army of sorts. Also, that swarm of nidly bits is very intimidating! Loving how the LoCs are coming along.

The Tyranid critters look awesome together, and kudos for getting all those weapon options done too! I need to do the same thing for my Tau army (get all the weapons painted, I mean). The big bad birds are coming along nicely too; I really love that kit and I'd get one if I wasn't already planning to downsize my Chaos collection.

Incredible mix of stuff, all excellent!

Over the years GW inks/washes have changed a lot. And with the new contrast paints, even more. I use that blue “wash” all the time for my Ultras, but it’s an ink though and through. Different effects from the assorted styles.

You have more spare weapons then bugs there! Good for you to get them all done. I frequently magazine parts, but paint up the spares a lot less often then I should. One of my ongoing goals is to catch up on that.

@The Riddle of Steel - Thanks, I'm impressed you've gone through the lot! not an easy feat.

@Graven - Thanks buddy!

@Zerg - Cheers

@Nev - Yeah, that blue messed me up a touch I haven't touched them in a month due to 'other' things going on, I hope to soon though.

@Cam - Thank you!

Update: So the trip to the USA was action packed, 2 weeks of Disney Land, Universal studios, D23, Santa Monica Peir and Hollywood boulevard left me very tired and with little time. Then after getting back Wow Classic was released, another massive time sink. Then on weekends theres been kids parties, skiing away from home and baby showers. So the actual time spent painting has been very low. I've slowly plugged away at some marines and thats basically it.
