I'm torn right now between getting assault cannons or las-plas turrets on my razorbacks that I am planning on using in a space marine gladius. For your info the Gladius has 6 razorbacks and 6 drop pods and I have enough spare points to outfit 3 of the razorbacks.

Assault cannons. No risk of overheating, better vs hordes, can rend (minor chance of hurting Av14).

Since these are free, I guess its' not that important, but the assault cannon always disappoints me.

I prefer lascannon/plasma guns myself. AP2 is always valuable and assault cannons are just underwhelming to me for the same points cost.

You still have to pay 20pts for the weapon upgrade. But yeah its WAY better then paying 75pts total.

Las/Plasma sounds great. I believe it's twin linked plasma so you have almost no chance of taking damage from gets hot. It'd be around a 1/72 chance per shot that way. That's what I would go with if I had Razorbacks.

The big advantage of the Assault Cannon is that it's only one weapon. A moving Razorback can shoot only one weapon at full ballistic skill.

Only Blood Angels should be using the Las/Plas. Fast Razorbacks and all. Assault Cannons are the better choice on vanilla but, when it comes to the Gladius ones, I'd rather keep the Heavy Bolters and spend the points on upgrades... Points get really tight really quick in that Detachment.

The disadvantage is that it's one weapon, meaning a weapon destroyed result knocks out all your firepower automatically. Plus a moving Razorback would still get to fire its second gun at BS1. Better than nothing.

If that's worth 5 points, add a Storm Bolter. It'll even compliment the Assault Cannon!

I think it also come down to the Role they are going to be used for.
For Me:
Mobile Tactical and Assault Squads, The Assault Cannon.
For Devastator Squads I would go with the LAs/Plas

AP2 alone is worth 5 points over the assault cannon. With the various nerfs to rending since 4th edition, I think the versatility of the las/ plas turret is better for a TAC list than the assault cannon.

Take Khan for 12" scout moves on your free razorbacks.
Then I'd run a mix of assault cannons and las/plas.

That was the plan. I think I'll just try to run 2 of each. Now where to find 20 points... Automatically Appended Next Post: Scratch that. I'll run 4 las- plas and 2 assault cannon razorbacks. I found out I had added my points wrong.

I prefer either TL AS or TL LC to las/plas on a vanilla razorback. For the Demi company I'd put the tacs in assault cannon ones and the have the devastators sitting in cover with lascannons to go along with their lascannon RBs.
So that would make 6 assault cannon razorbacks advancing on the board with grav/plasma then 8 Las cannons and 2 TL lascannons sitting back.

You may want to consider some of the razorbacks as TL-lascannon or heavy bolters. The reason for this is physical space on the board. No matter whether you have scout or not there is only so much space within 24" of the opponent. If all your razorbacks are 24" max range and you take more than 6 of them I can promise you you will develop traffic jams every game and will cost you games on occasion. I have won at least 3 games on turn 2-3 by just ramming models in front of the tanks and causing a massive traffic jam in a tank parking lot.
The TL-lascannon razorback is not bad for a 20 pts TL BS4 lascannon and doesn't need any other upgrades as it moves little to none. It also makes a great backfield objective holder. If you don't need the extra tank then the HB option is IMO really good for a backfield objective holder, taxi, and LoS blocker to a dev squad. 36" range is usually enough for a decent all purpose weapon like a HB and it is common to just drive the vehicle back and forth to let the dev squad shoot and then have LoS blocking terrain.
